When trained fingers touch a musical instrument, what resonates out is enchanting melodies. This was true of Karnataka’s senior flautist Shaikh Abdullah Khazi, whose unpretentious approach to instrumentality and virtuosity lent a soothing melodic treatment to the discerning listeners and connoisseurs of Hindustani classical music. His recital was hosted by S.G. Balekundri Institute of Technology at its campus in the city on Friday evening. He was accompanied by Belagavi’s percussionist Narayan Ganachari on Tabla and supported by his disciple Jahanvi Joshi from Hubballi-Dharwad on flute.
Belagavi, Jan.27: Soothing melodies: Senior flautist Shaikh Abdullah Khazi, accompanied by Narayan Ganachari on Tabla and supported by his disciple Jahanvi Joshi performed at S.G. Balekundri Institute of Technology in Belagavi on Friday.
Taking off on the pleasant and heptatonic-scaled yaman raag for the evening session, the flutist started unfolding the melody over an unhurried alaap, emphatically signifying each note and phrase, and the beauty of the interludes between the melodic phrases highlighted by fine meendkari and clear murkis on the bamboo flute. A strict disciplinarian when it comes to the classical music, Shaikh Kazhi restricts himself from indulging in what some describe as gimmicks and exaggeration. Rather, he would delineate the melody through brief and medium length phrases where various permutations and combinations are crafted within the precincts of the well-defined grammar for interpretation and raagdari. Having gracefully established the majestic and devotional mood of yaman, the alaap, followed by a brief jor, was essentially a reflection of the flautist’s simplicity, his candidness and artistry. Apparently, the ambience was filled with pure music. The following gats, set to madhya-laya and drut-teentaal were testimony to his unflinching control over laya and perseverance to be in tune with the swar and laya. In sum, his flute recital was marked by pure form and content scripted through clearly reverberating swaras. The only thing that was disappointing, as usual and as it happened with other artists who have performed here was inefficient audio-system facilitated by the host institution unwitting casting a shadow over such music concerts.
Paying his befitting tributes to the freedom fighters on the occasion of the Republic Day celebrations which coincided with the 59th Gaanasinchana, a monthly music programme initiated by the SGBIT to promote art and culture in its campus and society, Shaikh Khazi played the Mahatma Gandhi’s one of the favourite bhajans ‘vaishanva jana tho tene kahiye…’ followed by another devotional composition ‘payo ji meine ram ratan dhan payo…’. He concluded the session with the popular melody ‘vathapi ganapatim bhaje…’ composed in Carnatic raag hamsadhwani.
Percussionist Narayan Ganachari was all thrilling with his brief laggis, todas and tihais he rendered snatching time to elevate his rhythmic support, while the Jahanvi’s candid support was an indication of her disciplined learning of music and flute. EOM.
Shaikh Abdullah Khaji was born in Karadi of Bagalkot district in a religious and a spiritual family known for its folk literature, music, drama, lavani-singing, creating and singing rivayat poetry. His family, gifted with traditional ayurveda practitioners, also has a noble tradition of giving free medicines to the poor patients.
After his graduation in Arts in Kannada from Government Degree College, Sindur, he took to flute sometime during 1971-72 under the tutelage of famous flautist Pt. V.N. Badi for eight years. As his devotion and passion for the Hindustani classical music and flute kept on growing with the passage of time, he went under the discipleship of the doyenne of Kirana gharana late Padmavibhushan Gangubai Hangal for higher lessons. It was under her that her that he learnt the finesse of the alaap and development of the raag in gayaki style. It’s true that he was taught only one raag during his eight years of learning under his Guru. But, that was the window to all other ragas, says Shaikh Khazi.
While performing at various concerts, he is also active in producing Radio plays and arranging music. In 1989, he founded ‘Amrut Varshini Sangeet Sanstha’ and retired as an Artist of Akashwani, Kulbargi a few couple of years ago. He has performed at various prestigious venues:
· Kundagol Savai Gandharv Sangeet Mahotsav.
· Doordarshan Bengaluru, Gulbarga and Delhi.
· Gururao Deshpande Sangeet Sammelan, Bengaluru
· Bhopal (M.P.) Sangeetotstav – 1995.
· Hindustani Sangeet Mohotsav, Warangal, (A.P.)
· Hyderabad Sangeetotstav at Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, Secundarabad.
The decision of Sri Siddeshwara Swamiji of Jnana Yogashrama, Vijayapura not to accept the prestigious national award, the Padma Shri with due respect to the Union Government for selecting him for the honour is undoubtedly personal. As he himself clarified in his hand-written letter to the Prime Minister that a spiritual being need no award but only for those with great accomplishments in various fields. Truly spiritual indeed!
But, at least some political observers in Karnataka were served with food for thought when the Bharatiya Janata Party led NDA government at the centre announced the names of the selected personalities for the Padma awards on the eve of Republic Day, as it coincided with the ongoing for and against campaign for separate religion status for the Lingayat community. While many BJP leaders are lingayat mutts are in support of the demand, which comes to limelight time and again and particularly during election-time, some of the leaders are arguing that the proposed religion tag should be ‘Veerashaiv-Lingayat’ as they believe that both Veerashaivas and Lingayats are same.
Looking into the recent past, majority of Veerashaiva-Lingayats joined hands and supported their community leader B.S. Yeddyurappa in the last assembly election bringing the BJP into power on its own in 2008. Mr.Yeddyurappa, regarded as BJP’s war horse, was sworn in as Chief Minister then. With the State due for assembly elections and the BJP, which is desperately looking forward to dethrone the Siddaramaiah led Congress government and return to power, is espousing Veerashaiva-Lingayat cause again for the fact that the community is one of the economically, politically and socially strongest communities in Karnataka, particularly in Northern Karnataka region.
The anger among the community members against Congress for unceremoniously removing late Veerendra Patil, who as KPCC president brought the party back to power in 1989, as Chief Minister in 1992 is still visible in some camps, although it was diluted in the wake of issues of corruption coming to light during the BJP government and infighting among power-hungry leaders within the party which saw three chief ministers in the first ever full-fledged BJP government in five years. The BJP is again wooing this Veerashaiv-Lingayat community to realize its political ambitions, a fact which is not exception to Congress or JD(S), or any other party when it comes to lure the voters on religious and caste appeals.
The centre choosing for Padma award, Shri Siddeshwara Swamiji who is one of the most respected saint among several other Veerashaiva-Lingayat mutts in the State and country for his spiritual way of life, is being viewed another step to lure the community and encash their votes at the hustings. Swamiji has declined to accept it without any contempt but for spiritual reasons, as understood by all those who have watched his way of living for long. In fact, there were doubts if the Swamiji would accept the award the moment the news broke out, which eventually came true. With that different political and wishful inferences are being drawn by both in BJP and Congress circles and other parties. And the possible inferences are anybody’s guess.
However, the issue in all its probability will be kept alive till elections and sometime thereafter as the 7-member expert committee set up by the State government, in its last sitting about a fortnight ago has sought six months time to study and submit its report. This has provided relief to both the BJP and Congress and other parties in its own way, as none of them would be blamed for not supporting the religion tag for the Veerashaiva-Lingayat community, even as the voters are aware of who is on which side.

In the month of August 2017, POWERGRID has partnered with Indian Railway for Electrification of Un-electrified Railway Tracks under this the Londa-Miraj 189 rkm at a Cost Rs 208.15 crore has been proposed.
Indian Railways had launched Mission Electrification on 3rd Nov’16 for electrification of 24,400 route kilometre (rkm) of BG network in next five years i.e. almost equal to what has been done from introduction of electric traction since 3rd Feb’1925.
In order to make this ambitious project successful, Indian Railways for the first time has changed from Business as usual (BAU) approach and entrusted new electrification works not only to Railway PSUs like Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), Indian Railway Construction Company (IRCON) and Rail India Techno Economic Service (RITES) but also to Power Grid Corporation India Limited (PGCIL), a well known transmission sector PSU under Ministry of Power (MoP). As part of Mission Electrification, in recent past 10 different electrification projects covering 2516 route kilometer at a cost of about Rs 2797 Cr. have been finalized in a short duration.
The actual time when the same would be complete is not known.

The Deccan Chronicle has posted this very interesting story, which states Belagavi’s Hindalga prison a group of convicted prisoners in barrack-I is currently using at least five to six mobile phones regularly without fear of the police or jail authorities, and even lends them to other prisoners for a hefty sum, according to sources.
Well its not new about mobiles and other goods to be found inside jail, but this time around Two of the phones are presently hidden in a big hole in the stone wall behind a portrait in the barrack.
The Deccan Chronicle story further mentions, “Some of the mobile phones are secretly stuffed behind portraits hanging inside the barrack. Two of the phones are presently hidden in a big hole in the stone wall behind a portrait in the barrack. After stuffing the phones inside, the inmates pack the hole with wax and later hang the portrait over it to ensure that none of the guards or police officers find them,” explain prison sources. The phones are allegedly coming in handy for several inmates from different states to be in touch with their network of criminals and families. A trio jailed for a Bitcoin scam recently has been reportedly using the mobile phones in the barrack for a huge fee.
“The phones are used through the day until the barrack closes at 7 pm. They are used despite the CCTVs inside. The prisoners are aware of the timings of the phone-jammer and make phone calls when it is not on. The Prison Department has miserably failed to stop the use of phones, drugs and alcohol inside the jail despite conducting a number of raids over the last few years. Mobile phones and SIM cards have been found on several occasions with inmates during raids conducted by senior police officers in the past. A notorious sharpshooter from Chota Rajan’s gang, Yousuf Bachkana was using mobile phone from inside Hindalga prison for several weeks until the ATI police from Mumbai tracked one of his calls,” recall sources.

India will be powerful only when it’s every mother, every sister and every wife is powerful. A standing ovation by the public for this dialogue, itself is a paisa vasool moment.
What’s Good: The intention and the subject chosen is applause worthy. Use of humour to show what cannot be spoken is well managed by the director. Screenplay is good without giving a loose moment. Music and background score is a hidden gem.
What’s Bad: Recently we saw the same Akshay Kumar fighting with the society for a social cause in Toilet. Hence we always get a seen-this-before feeling while watching. Time lapse from 2001 to 2016 is poorly shown which brings a bit confusion as to how old flap mobiles and the vespa bike existed during the same era. The movie is not powerful enough to stay in our mind for long or not powerful enough to bring an immediate change or revolution.
Performance: Needless to say, a powerful and charismatic performance by Akshay Kumar. Radhika Apte looked sad throughout the movie and an over drama spotted in her performance.
Sonam Kapoor brings all the sweetness and charm in the second half and her chemistry works well with Akki.
Verdict: Could have been better. However a one time watch for sure. Dear men, watch this for every woman in your life. 3 stars !!

Now, the passenger has to simply download the ‘UTS’ (Unreserved Ticketing System) app and complete a simple registration process to obtain unreserved tickets. The passenger also has option to travel with paperless ticket or take a print of the ticket at ATVM or at ticket counter at ease.

If, Parents are the FIRST teachers – What are children learning today from their parents? Teaching them good values with love and appreciation will change their perspective towards LIFE completely…
Values are ethics followed by an individual to show actions and determine things that are best to do or live with. The actions which are highly valuable are regarded as “good” and the actions of low value are regarded as “bad.”
Representational image from the internet
If you want your child to develop good value system, the first teaching should be from the parents by following the values and then encourage children to follow; be it discipline, cleanliness, caring, respecting emotions, or building affection among others. Today’s generation always has a tendency to observe parents and the society they live, following in the footsteps of their elders in actions and words you practice as they grow up to be adults. So, if we are practicing negative values, which are of low in value, they will have an impact of it too; be it showing anger, shouting, hatred, violence, corruption, etc.
Today’s kids are learning their values also from television, social media, and movies. Imagine how many crimes, murders, alcohol commercials they have watched by the time they get out of school. It is our responsibility to monitor use of these technologies in our day-to-day life and spend time with kids nurturing proper values.
If you feel that your child does not listen to you, remember that most of the time they will be observing you. Children learn more while observing rather than listening no matter how small or big your child is. You are passing the trend of today’s modern culture and values to them and one day when you will see your child adapting these, don’t be surprised because it is you who have shown them it is OKAY to live the way you want; call it FREEDOM or EXPRESSION.
Parents should be the real idol to follow in today’s culture. Try to become a responsible parent because Your Child is watching YOU.
We always expect our child to have good values. How many parents actually have good values and they follow it?? They will only practice what they see you doing. Values should be taught in a more serious way. Parents need to form groups and set common values for today’s generation. Society uniformity for value building is MUST for today’s generation.
It costs absolutely $0.00 to become a decent human being.
“The right kind of education based on moral values will upgrade the society and the country…” – Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.
Values, Bonding, Love, Faith, and Affection have a very strong meaning, which you need to FOLLOW first and then educate your child by setting an example of how you can contribute it to the world.
APPRECIATION WORKS LIKE A MAGIC WAND!!! (a precious gift)
Appreciate your child if you want the world to DO it. We do not understand the importance of appreciating our child, but do it often with others child. It is the subconscious mind that affects and therefore the results vary.
Appreciation makes them DO more. Appreciation makes them feel LOVED more.
Imagine you are at your office and working hard for whole month and your colleague has been appreciated well enough for his work and you are not.
If you are a housewife, when you hear the appreciation for your neighbor’s recipe and never receive any for yours; it hurts a lot too, right??
We being so grown up still feel the pain then imagine the pain your child goes through when such incidents happen in their daily life with their performance and emotions.
Sometimes the Appreciation given in today’s world is focused in a wrong way, which misleads the child again. When a person buys a new bike, car, property, luxuries, etc., that person is highly appreciated for those things, whereas the Appreciation should be focused on the hard work and dedication that person has put forth to make it possible. By doing this, you will ensure that your child’s focus will be on the efforts, dedication, and the learning process they have to undergo to achieve this Success and will be more focused on doing it.
“Competition is the easy part. Behind-the-scene is where all the work is done.” – Usain Bolt.
The above sentence gives us a clear picture of where the Appreciation should be focused upon.
The way today we showcase them Success of others to our children is creating difference in emotions, relations, jealousy and the focus will remain only on achieving the Success for which they may not opt to work hard, but will feel the short-cuts are good to achieve. Each child must be taught about WHERE or HOW to put the efforts to get things done or they may end up resulting in frustration or depression. Do not focus on the RESULTS, but rather appreciate and encourage the efforts you want your child to adapt and follow.
Children usually go away from parents or have a bad life especially when they are not brought up well with good values and not being appreciated. Your one word “Busy” can make their life Hell and one word of “Love” will bring all the happiness into their life. With this busy world, we are not giving anything to our family, which actually should be the FIRST priority.
Important points for parents; with this, the bonding will be a lot more different from what you are experiencing now. Make a habit and START today.
Help and encourage the decision making quality in your child.
Focus on what your child is doing right and not only on what they are doing wrong.
Don’t bring up painful memories from the past.
Speak well of their friends and their loved ones too.
Understand their age, you have gone through it (recall the things you have DONE).
Your child who was learning to ride bicycle, when you said, “Just go along, I’m right behind you” was confident to ride throughout. When did you say it again lately? Your child always needs your support. A simple push and they are moving. Think about IT.
Understand the parenting your child needs and ACT NOW!! Tell your kids, you love them for everything and they are GENIUS indeed.

Minister of Railways and Coal, who was on a visit to Belagavi has asked officials to draft a plan to construct the entrance portion of the Belagavi station like Sabarmati Ashram and send it to him for approval.
After paying floral tributes to the photo of Mahatma Gandhi and after he was briefed about the importance of the station with Mahatma Gandhi’s reference, he asked his officials to make the front entrance portion of the station like the Sabarmati Ashram as a tribute to the Mahatma.
The Belagavi station has a small monument which makes a note of the Arrival of the Mahatma in 1924 to Belagavi as the President for the Congress convention. The same monument could now also have a charka installed according to the minister.
Now the SWR officials will have to prepare the plan and send it for approval.
Keep the People friendly policing vision in mind the Commissioner of police D C Rajjappa has said that Every THIRD SATURDAY of the month (4 PM to 5 PM) would be observed as Commissioner’s day, where the public can meet the Commissioner in his office and voice their complaints.
So on February 17, 4 PM onwards at the Commissioner of Police office the citizens could get in their complaints and voice them directly with the Commissioner himself.
Many people are still scared to voice their complaints and hence such a day would give them a platform to voice such complaints directly to the commissioner him self.
