World kidney day is celebrated all over the world on second of Thursday in the month of March. The aim of the day is to raise the public awareness about the kidneys importance & its contribution to the overall health. First time World Kidney Day celebration was started in the year 2006.
Objectives of celebrating World Kidney Day:
World Kidney Day is celebrated to highlight the kidney problems related to the common health diseases like Diabetes, High BP which may lead to kidney problems like Chronic Kidney Disease and also to encourage the common public through screening of all patients who are suffering from Diabetes or Hypertension.
The Kidney day also aims to encourage the people for early detection and prevention methods of the kidney problems to reduce the further complication & death from chronic renal failure.
Golden rules for better kidney prevention
1. Physical exercises help in reducing BP & thus reduce the risk of developing chronic kidney disease.
2. Maintaining the normal blood sugar levels as high blood sugar level lead to diabetes & thus kidney damage. This can be done by regular usage of medications, tests & checkup of kidney functions, like serum creatinine.
3. Regular monitoring of blood pressure as high BP leads to the heart attack or stroke thus kidney damage.
4. Eating healthy & maintaining normal weight as overweight & unhealthy eating habit lead to the diabetes, heart disease and Chronic Kidney Disease. Reduce salt intake & limit the intake processed foods.
5. Normal fluid intake as it helps kidneys to filter out sodium, urea and other body toxins.
6. Avoid smoking or getting in contact with smoking person
7. Avoid intake of Over the Counter pills, like pain killers (DICLOFENAC) which may lead to kidneys damage.
8. Proper & regular checkup of kidney functions.
Symptoms of kidney problems:
Most people never show symptoms until the Kidney disease gets advance however, some of the symptoms like swollen ankles, legs, fatigue, early tiredness, low appetite, occurrence of blood in urine needs to evaluated with simple tests like urine examination, serum creatinine and blood sugar levels to identify kidney problems.

The jury is still out on whether a special day is merited for women who form a natural half of the world’s population. However, those who do appreciate, say that it at least brings to fore issues related to women’s safety, health, nutrition, her status in family and society and the many problems that she faces. A back –of- the- envelope survey in my MBA class puts my female students at difficulty to list the restrictions at home or outside. Some say it’s only the late night timings that they have to adhere back home. Some are aware they face problems, but they have found a way out. One chirpy girl said, there are restrictions, but there are also a host of things out there in the world where I can prove my mettle and achieve something. It is not the same elsewhere, education being the biggest differentiator.
Women empowerment begins at home and ends with high levels of education. It begins with the right kind of parenting where gender does not form the deciding factor for privileges like food, clothing and education. I have plenty of students whose parents have pinned hopes on their daughters rather than the son, and providing them with quality professional education in spite of great difficulties. More of such parents are needed. Daughters need to be seeded with dreams and provided the strength to dream big. I read somewhere that all parents need to provide their children is roots and wings. So true when it comes to daughters.
We, the people of Belagavi, have seen very little, if any discretion when providing for education to daughters. Exceptions do exist, but our city’s culture has enabled scores of proud daughters to complete schooling, get education and have a career. It’s another matter that there are still plenty of girls from Belagavi who willingly opt to not have a career or work. Not that career should be the sole goal in life, but then a large potential of the population stays at home, and is not part of the nation’s growth saga. I recall Ms. Soniya Netalkar narrate her experience of Japan where the government took active steps to bring this potential workforce back to the organization by providing flexi timings, plentiful maternity leaves and other policies. Perhaps the government must chip in here.
All said, financial independence brings a lot of empowerment in the true sense. Most of the domestic exploitation happens due to the woman’s dependence on the sole earning member of the family- the husband. Money, key family decisions, inheritance are some factors that women still struggle with. If the woman does not wish to venture out for earning, work must reach her home. Make her life meaningful, purposeful. Families must make it a natural course of action that the woman are consulted for key family decisions like investments, weddings, education of the kids, etc. And families alone can instill respect for women among the kids from a young age. Especially the man bears the responsibility to exemplify his respect for the wife, the mother and sister at home. Kids emulate. Good and bad. Raise a kid who has seen his father respect his mother. Who has seen him reprimand when she is not. Women empowerment is a gradual but dynamic process that begins and ends at home. Only then can we think of workplace safety, travel safety and the like.
Our city has had its share of women stalwarts in the field of education, medicine and social work. We have seen a surge in the number of women in entrepreneurship of late. This trend must flourish. Women do not want to be ‘Same’ as men, all they want is to be looked at as equals. They know they are different, they have their own strengths. They are great planners, great at handling people and strong on empathy. They make great leaders and managers. Allowing them leverage their strengths is not such a big burden, is it? Being woman is so natural. So exhilarating.
And every single day, not just one. Just let her be. Let her take wings and fly. Then every day will be women’s day. And men’s day. Rather, Human’s day!
With an objective to empower women by linking their home made products to the domestic and international market, the University of Agricultural Sciences has signed a MoU with WEDA through its Vice Chancellor B S Janagoudar. WEDA is Women Entrepreneurs Development Association, an NGO working for the welfare of women.
This project will educate women about market strategies and advance technology. They would be exposed to the needs of the market, raw materials available and the products to be designed. Skill enhancement programmes would be conducted regularly along with technical training. The women who are selected for the training program will be given a stipend of Rs 5500 per month till the training is completed.
The term of the MoU is 5 years and WEDA aims to make at least 5000 women as entrepreneurs.
The programme would be launched under the slogan, ‘one village, one product’. The rural women would be exposed to handicrafts, fashion designing, jute fabric designs, value addition to home made products, making hand bags etc.
The core team consists of Rathi Shrinivasan, Vaishali Manoj Upadhye, Rupa Pramod Desai, Shruti Subhash Vernekar and Sucheta Inamdar from Belagavi.
Karunalaya is a Home for the dying, destitute, poor and abandoned of the city of Belagavi and its surrounding areas. It is run and managed by members of the LEOMEL Society for care of the dying and destitute who provide selfless service to the residents of the Home. It was founded by Mrs. Anita Rodricks, retired teacher of St. Paul’s High School, Belagavi. By establishing this Home, she and the society members hope to reach out in love and service to the poorest of the poor to care, support and assist the dying, destitute and abandoned who have no one to look after them.
Karunalaya also has a branch at Pirna, Goa
Most of the residents of the Home are suffering. Some residents are partially paralyzed, some are deaf & dumb, some get epileptic fits, some suffer from diabetes and high blood pressure and a few are mentally ill. Karunalaya is not an old age home. It is specifically meant for the dying, destitute and poor who are abandoned and have no one to look after them. It caters to everyone regardless of race, creed, religion or sex, subject to the availability and admission criteria of the Home. Mrs. Anita Rodricks, the founder of Karunalaya, resides in the Home and is responsible for the day-to-day running of the Home. The Home solely depends on the generosity and kindness of the general public.
Karunalaya welcomes with open arms those who are poor, dying, destitute or abandoned and have no friends or family to look after them.
Karunalaya is a home that provides the residents, who are poor, destitute and abandoned, a roof over their heads to sleep, simple food for daily nourishment and medical assistance for their illnesses.
HOW IT ALL BEGAN
Mrs. Anita Rodricks, husband passed away early and that left Mrs.Anita devastated. Her brothers and sister were always with her but she still something was missing in her life. In an effort to fill the heart-broken emptiness she tried to search opportunities. At this time she was also a mother of three and raising them and educating them she still had an urge to work for the poor.
Teacher Anita as she was called in St. Pauls High School, took and eary retirement for the cause of the poor. She was very impressed with Sneha Sadan, Hubli, run by Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity. She got a chance to work for the dying, destitute, terminally ill and poor. The selflessness and generosity of the Sisters of Mother Teresa inspired her to do something similar for our city of Belgaum.
Inmates of KarunalayaBy establishing Karunalaya, which means a Home of Compassion and Love, She envisioned a Home providing physical nourishment, emotional support, medical assistance, and care to the dying, destitute, abandoned and poor. Mrs.Anita could not do this all alone, hence she sought help of her best friends especially Fr. Victor D’Cruz and Ms. Mariamma Nygam who supported her on every step and to setup The LEOMEL Society for Care of the Dying and the Destitute.
Volunteer feeding an Inmate
The Society is a group of my closest friends and relatives who extend their dedicated and selfless service to the residents of the Home, without whose help and support Karunalaya would not be where it is today.
Karunalaya has come across many deserving cases. Paralytics lying on the roadside and starved destitute dying on the foot path. Some residents were poor and had no one to look after them who were in urgent need of medical attention. Some residents who came to us were mentally challenged incapable of looking after themselves and had no one to look after them. Some residents who suffer from medical conditions, including epilepsy. Some are very tragic cases where residents were abandoned by their very own children and asked to leave the house. The one inmate who was admitted which is in our minds is who could not speak, read or write, Karunalaya had no choice but to give him a name.
Karunalaya is built on a piece of land measuring about 2 acres (approx. 8100 sq. meters) in the village of Navage on the outskirts of the city of Belgaum. Construction began in September 2004 and was completed in January 2005. It was designed and fully supervised by one of Belgaum’s leading Structural Engineers and Architect, Mr. Vijay Moogi, a society member.
The first phase of Karunalaya was officially inaugurated on 4th January 2005 and included a large Dormitory, Kitchen & Dining Hall, Toilets, Bathing rooms and Staff accommodation. There was no electricity and getting water was a major problem. Despite many hardships and difficulties, on 19th February 2005, the birth anniversary of her late husband, Melwin Rodricks, she decided to go and live in the Home with her first two residents – Maruti Uchukar and Arjun Ramling. Since there was no electric supply in the Home, she bought a diesel Generator on an installment basis at the cost of Rs. 58,000/- Due to the high cost of operation, the generator was sparingly used for only one hour a day. For drinking water Mrs.Anita used to get it from her home in camp.
The second expansion phase of Karunalaya was inaugurated on 21st January 2007 and added a new block that included another large Dormitory with attached Toilets and Bathing rooms, increasing the residential capacity of the Home. The new Dormitory was named Conrad House and assigned to the male residents. The existing Dormitory was named Melani House and assigned to the female residents. The Kitchen & Dining Hall was named Natasha Refectory.

The VLCI-CoE has been established with the objective of developing next generation Manufacturing Change Leaders (Engineering Graduates) through a unique teaching-learning process of 30%-70% of classroom teaching and industrial training. The curriculum is designed, developed, delivered and evaluated in a unique way by the consortium of both industries and academicians. The CoE will also have the objective to train the faculty and industrialists about flow management system and productivity improvement.
Prof. Shoji Shiba speaking on the occasion said that, with VLCI, they have tried to create an excellent model of ‘Skill India’ for the country’s young population. The young people of the country are increasing every day, but are difficult for them to get jobs as they lack the skills and concepts required by the industry. There is a big gap between the academia and industry. Through VLCI, we make the faculty come to industry and work with them. Later, the faculty implements the gained knowledge in training the younger generation,” he said. Prof. Shiba in his address appreciated KLSGIT for taking initiative of establishing this CoE to help the SME to improve the productivity and remarked that; inaugural of CoE is a historic moment of KLSGIT.
The inaugural function also saw the handing over of Certificates for successful VLCI team members from leading industries like TATA Motors, TVS Harita and Fehrer, and TAFE and academicians from KLSGIT.

Farmers protested along with their cows and buffaloes demanding that the Belagavi urban development authority drop the plans of acquiring 160 acres of land in the village that borders the city to turn it into a residential layout.
Farmers said they had fertile land and their livelihoods would be affected after the land is acquired.

They demanded that the plan to acquire the 160 acres of land be scrapped.
Some farmers from Kanbargi have warned that they would hang themselves if their fertile land was acquired.
Farmers and families from Kanbargi village had given a statement that they would commit suicide if their fertile agricultural land is acquired by BUDA.
The recent trend of subscription fit food that is creating a buzz elsewhere is now buzzing in Belagavi as well, with Farm to Fork’s The Pantry.
One can preempt committing to at least one healthy meal a day. Following a healthy meal on a daily basis can be a challenge for most individuals. The staff at home might not know to toss a meal in interesting ways or make healthier meals with less oil. Sometimes your cook goes on a long leave and the client slips off the wagon and is unable to follow a healthy meal pattern.
Subscription meals are a boon. The entire menu is planned with the help of professionals and chefs who have the expertise to toss up tasty and healthy meals.
Maximizing yields, has taken us back to demanding for organics, which unfortunately are sold at a premium. Our country, state or even our very own city, have excellent quality raw products, however they are exported or sold to the highest bidder.
Our age is diverting towards a far complex way of living and have forgotten that basic food products provide us with more than sufficient nutrition and a balance in our diet.
FARM TO FORK – a cause and it’s origin
According to the recommended dietary allowance, our customary Indian diet lacks Protein and a good balance of macronutrients. They ensure that all the essential nutrition is covered in our meals.
The meals have a high protein content, for a perfect satiety factor, complex carbs to aid easy digestion and a decent proportion of vegetable fibres to cover the necessary minerals and vitamins. Use of rice bran oil, in strictly limited quantities, as it contains omega 3.
Speaking to AAB, Aneesh Prabhudesai, one of the co-founder said,
It all started, when Siddharth Dandin, who hails from a house of doctors, and also a fitness enthusiast decided to source some fresh vegetables for himself from the huge number of green houses and vegetable farms surrounding Belagavi.
He opened the eyes of two hospitality experience enriched friends Atish Agrawal (The chef trained under a Michelin star pro) and Aneesh Prabhudesai.
With the sudden surge of restaurants and an absence for a health centric or a basic nutritious meal in Belagavi. We decided to offer our concept to the entire city, what started off with only Salads, later moved on to healthy Protein meals, and other variations which are widely famous in Belagavi.
Aneesh further said,
The concept is picking up extremely well, and yes we think belgaumites don’t have to wait to plan a trip to a metro to enjoy a healthy and appetizing meal.
They aim at batch produced and non stored food products, hence the name FARM TO FORK. Each product is made from freshly sourced vegetables from farms in and around Belagavi, also organic (when available).
This sourcing was critical as it forms the crux of our diverse meal requirements and to ensure a fresh and consistent supply.
Their team is formed by proactive young individuals, possessing over a decade of international hospitality experience. The Chef & Owner himself has trained and worked under a Michelin star world renowned Chef. That can assure you, that healthy meals are not necessarily boring.
Currently their menu boasts of preparations which change and rotate on a daily basis. They are targeted at health conscious individuals who need calculated macro nutrients with proteins and carbs in precise grammage. However they can be equally appetizing as CHEAT MEALS (junk food) with great nutrients minus the negatives.
Presently they offer the following on a daily basis
•Oatmeals
•Salads
•Veg Protein meals (upon prior request)
•Pan seared Chicken
•Non Veg Protein meals
They are available at various pickup points across the city and also through our delivery partner.
Their meals are now available for pickup at: USM store, JNMC campus, Coffee shop, JNMC campus, The pantry, a Farm to Fork pick up point at Tilakwadi beside Big Bazaar
And also the convenience of door delivery through our delivery partner Hangry Oye on 7090790034.

Narendra Murkumbi, founder promoter of Shree Renuka Sugars Ltd (SRSL) Belagavi, has resigned as vice-chairman and managing director after foreign partner Wilmar International increased its stake in the company to 39 per cent from 27 per cent. Wilmar will now have to make an open offer at Rs 16.29 per share, 5 per cent higher than Friday’s closing price.
Failed bets in Brazil and mounting debt have finally caught up with Naredra Murkumbi, the man who until today was known as the promoter of Shree Renuka Sugars, following the takeover Murkumbi has resigned but will continue to retain his post till the stipulated notice period of 90 days or completion of open offer by Wilmar.
Vidya & Narendra Murkumbi
The move is part of a debt restructuring exercise, which began last year when Renuka Sugars allotted the preferential shares at ₹16.27 each to Wilmar Sugar Holdings.
The company’s debt, which stood at ₹1,343 crore in September 2009, had grown to₹6,500 crore in 2017. This affected its profitability.
The terms of agreement also gave Wilmar Sugar Holdings options to receive allotment of 481.84 million, 0.01 per cent, preferences shares at a price of Rs 16.27 per share, which can be converted into equity shares. Last month, the Competition Commission of India had approved the company’s acquisition of additional stake in Shree Renuka Sugars.
Murkumbi happens to be a first generation entrepreneur who set up one of the most profitable sugar firms along with his mother, Vidya Murkumbi, in 1998and this was just 4 years after he graduated from IIM, Ahmedabad.
Murkumbi became the poster boy of Indian sugar industry, his company enjoyed a market cap of Rs 76 billion in early 2010 (it is just Rs 14.7 billion now). Renuka’s first acquisition in Brazil happened in November 2009. Three months after taking control of VDI, Murkumbi went for another Brazilian acquisition, Equipav SA in early 2010. The debt driven acquisition of these two loss-making companies, however, did not work. Brazil suffered a drought in 2011, hitting production. The global surplus in sugar weighed on prices. The enhanced capacity utilisation that Murkumbi had envisaged did not happen and the two acquisitions continued to bleed.

As the day is coming closer for the announcement of the date for the assembly elections the politics on the ground is also getting heated up and today at the Navshakti Samavesh held at Belagavi south, PD Dhotre and Sunil Chougule alleged that they were assaulted by supporters of Abhay Patil EX MLA.
Navshakti Samavaesh meeting was called in Ramnath Mangal Karlaya and as PD Dhotre had got an SMS about the same he along with Sunil Chougule went to the venue, where both of them were stopped and asked as to why they have come here and they should get out from here. During the heated exchanges, Dhotre alleges that about five supporters of Abhay Patil assaulted him and tore his shirt and Sunil chougule was also pushed.
A complaint has been filed and Dhotre got himself admitted in Civil hospital.
