Heritage that binds us

By Swatee Jog

Priorities change in times like this; and hence, a key date for heritage enthusiasts like us was lost amidst the din of the current crisis. 18th April is World Heritage Day. As members of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) Belagavi Chapter, we have been celebrating this day with some meaningful activities every year, including heritage walks, presentations and competitions, but this year has been solemn. However, in spite of all the apprehensions and anxieties surrounding us, in spite of being forced to stay home to be safe, we have not let go of that one key factor that binds us all – our true Indian Heritage.

Just look around, you will find all of us bound in the common string of our rich heritage. It received a lot of flak, but we have tried the saree challenge and revived the interest in the six yards.

The social media is abuzz with homes doling out all our culinary delights, from cuisines of all the states and even beyond the country’s borders. When exotic ingredients are not possible to get, the womenfolk have gone back to the grandma’s cookbook and introduced kids to our traditional foods. Recipes, alternative ingredients and pictures are being shared.

All sorts of board games have made a comeback. When the shelves in the supermarkets were brimming with exotic vegetables and foods, we scorned at the local produce. Today, the same humble potato, brinjal, okra, coriander, chillies and coconut have come to our rescue. The box of assorted masalas has become the soul of the kitchen. The desi lemon and watermelon has quenched our summer thirst where no ice creams and cold drinks could help. We are better off with a regular supply of vegetables and milk to our homes. Some fortunate ones have tended their gardens and nurtured the beautiful plants and flowers.

The world over and even in India, kids have been regaled with virtual tours of the museums, historic places and heritage sites. A few older ones have taken online classes to understand our heritage better. Books have come to the rescue for a whole lot of readers.
A small pastime like surfing through old family albums has taught much to the young generation. More so, the strength of the bond of a close knit family.

After two weeks at home, I am seeing numerous households teaching the kids the centuries old prayers and hymns, yoga and even cooking. Parents couldn’t have been happier to revise something they themselves had forgotten.

Yes, the crisis has rejuvenated the soul of India and its rich heritage. But we must also spare a moment of thought for all those craftsmen and artists who have lost their livelihood. Imagine the plight of the bamboo basket weavers of Burud Galli, the coppersmiths of Tambat Galli, the potters of Khanapur, the weavers of Vadgaon and the scores of others who are dependent on traditional means of livelihood. Each one of us is apprehensive and anxious of our future, but these are the people who are the most vulnerable.

This crisis has given us an opportunity to recognize, value and cherish our rich heritage, more than ever before. Don’t lose this opportunity. Let it not be just a passing phase. The local food produce that we’ve got used to, the means of entertainment that we have adopted, the bond of the family that has strengthened, the sharing and caring for our neighbors and even the unknown, may this stay forever and not just in these difficult times. Just like we supported and stood by our countrymen in the difficult times, may we do so when it passes too.

The heritage of our country is extremely rich and touches every aspect of our life. It will help us tide through these times as well only if we commit ourselves to remember its significance.

There will be no relaxation in lockdown in the state of Karnataka till May 3. The Karnataka state cabinet has decided to not give any relaxation in the wake of the growing number of COVID-19 cases in the state. Belagavi district has 42 COVID-19 positives with one death and one discharge.

The Karnataka Cabinet on Monday decided to continue the present lockdown till May 3 without any relaxation to industries or services located in rural and urban areas.

With this announcement, it is clear that all types of industries and services would be remained closed until May 3. However, relaxations will be granted only to agriculture and horticulture-related activities and agricultural marketing.

Also, the Cabinet decided to promulgate an ordinance to control the spread of the disease, to provide security to police and frontline health workers. It is also aimed at punishing those indulging in spreading fake news and those who do not cooperate with the government in containing the pandemic.

The cabinet deliberated on whether the manufacturing sector and industries can be given any relaxation like in rural areas or urban areas. But since everything is linked like a chain- raw materials, transport, food etc in the interest of the state the lockdown would continue until May 3 strictly.

SURESH ANGADI, TURNED OUT TO BE A SAVIOUR FOR THE LITTLE KID

On 11th April 2020, Saturday a request was received at the office of Hon’ble Minister of State of Railways Shri Suresh Angadi at Belagavi. A child of 5 years of age of Belagavi was undergoing treatment from a Doctor based at Pune. The medicine was said to be critical and it was to be transported to Belagavi from Pune. Their appeals to Maharashtra State authorities to permit their relatives based at Pune to drive their vehicle to Belagavi to bring the medicine had gone in vain.

Sensing the gravity of the matter, Hon’ble Minister immediately directed the concerned Railways Officials of Pune to assist in this. The medicine was brought to Pune Railway Station, and thereby it was transported through a Goods Train, which was due to pass through Belagavi and further. The staff of the train ensured that the medicine reach Belagavi safely the very next day. Further, Belagavi was also in lockdown due to the Covid19 situation.

Then the Railway Staff of Belagavi took the initiative to take the medicine closer to the home of the patient because the approach roads of the Station were blocked due to lockdown.Under the guidance and support of the Hon’ble MoSR Shri Suresh Angadi, turned out to be a saviour for the little kid.

School education after and before COVID-19

by Dr Manjeet Jain, In Collaboration with various principals of Education India

The coronavirus pandemic leading to the complete closures of schools has gravely disturbed the complete educational system across the globe,. Alarm bells are sounding in every school and the schools are struggling to find the possible alternatives for the interrupted education systems.

To find the challenges being faced by the schools we tried to contact the principals from various states of India. After talking to the principals, we found that it will not be exaggerated if we say that the Term BC [out of AD and BC] will be considered as Before Corona in the education sector henceforth.

Ms.Bharathi T B Principal of LRG Public School, Hindupur AP believes that E- learning has gained prominence even in the remote areas and now parents are able to focus and monitor the ways of teaching which were not possible earlier.

Mr Ashish Dave Principal of Pathak Public School, Rajkot says that the Learning process is going online but teaching is almost one way as interactive lessons are not possible as used to be before COVID 19.

While talking to Mr Joseph Joseph who is Principal of F D (Hameediyah) Hr Sec School Ahmedabad expressed that Covid-19 pandemic has proved that transformation is going to be an integral part of education post-Covid-19 and educators who are willing to convert their knowledge into digital use for others around will emerge as a change-maker in the education sector.

Schools are relaxed somehow with online classes but one of the most senior Principals Mrs. Preeti Verma from Image English School Ahmedabad showed another face of online education that before Covid 19 it was a two ways education system and at present it’s one way only. To the point teaching somewhat has gone mechanical with lacking an emotional bond of teachers and students as physical presence is missing.

The schools are closed, no early morning activities are seen. Somewhere silent sessions of online classes are on but aura of schooling is missing. One of my friends Mr Debabrata Biswas, who is leading a school Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand has an altogether different opinion he says “The Education Industry will turn once again towards the Consciousness-Based Education where we all shall realize the value of teachers once again”.

Indians are known for optimism and the same I could feel when Mr Tanmay G Jain Trustee of Discovery KIDZZ International Preschool, Surat explained that how Digital India’s vision of the government is emerging as a vital instrument for solving the present scenario of a shutdown of schools due to Covid-19. On the same line Ms. Anju Kumari Principal of Tripada Gurukulam Campus of Viramgam thinks this pandemic has proved that learning never stops. Online teaching and staying engaged through these were the challenges that everyone gradually has learned.

With the examples of Google’s new launch “Teach from Home” an information hub to teach educators on how to conduct online classes amid the virus lockdown Rashmi Mahajan- from Master Mind Institute from Mumbai finds this shutdown as an opportunity where the Indian education system has become more of digital-friendly and everyone is learning to be tech-savvy.

Students are happy about the flexible hours and getting to study in the comfort of their home. Teachers are also happy to work from with less workload. Technology companies, on their part, are helping institutions smoothen their sudden transition to online teaching format. A few new terms like ZOOM or WebEx have become common among all which were never listened to earlier.

After talking to so many principals one thing common I could see that all of them have a common voice “Let us hope the pandemic gets eliminated soon. Until then, keep safe” and this keeps the courage alive that “Nothing lasts forever and COVID – 19 too shall Pass”

Pride of Belagavi- Prashant Munnoli

$
0
0

It’s a very dramatic kind of way that we met Mr. Prashant Munnoli, the Dy.S.P of Channagiri subdivision in Davangere district and originally from Belagavi. He has just completed 2.5 years of rigorous training to be a Police Officer and is neck-deep in his duty- managing the COVID crisis being a key part of his current responsibility.

Many years ago, a person from Ramkrishna Mission came to me and handed over an MBA book with a hall ticket inside. It only had the student’s name and Bharatesh Global Business School as an exam center written on it. Since our lab hosts many online exams, I tried to find out his contacts but there were none. So I did what I knew best- searched his name on Facebook and dropped a message. And the next day, he was at Bharatesh to pick the book. Apparently, he had visited the Ashram after exams to relax and forgot the book there.

A mechanical engineer from KLE, he had just left his one-year-old job at TCS back then and was studying for his UPSC exams while also completing his MBA. He came across as a very grounded, intelligent, methodical, deep thinking and humble person. He is the same even today. After that day, we kept in touch and eventually, he even guided UPSC aspirants at a seminar at Bharatesh. Even today, he occasionally finds sometimes late at night to guide fresh UPSC aspirants online for the Vidya Kranti initiative.

Prashant-Munnoli

Happenstances like these have been many in Prashant’s life. Rather, it’s been a happening life, though he confesses it has been fraught with quite a lot of struggle. His father is from Sultanpur, in Hukkeri taluk and had a transferable govt. a job which saw Prashant moving places every three years. Studying in Govt. Kannada medium schools throughout, his dad thought he better stay at Belagavi for his high school education. So there he was, in B.K. Model in 8th std. opting for Sanskrit, which he studied even in his PUC. He traveled from Nilaji to Belagavi every day and spent almost three hours in commuting. Obviously it impacted his studies and he scored around 55% marks in 8th and 9th std. Finally, his teacher, Ms. Jayashri Bhagoji came to his help. She allowed meritorious students like Prashant to stay in her house for studies. That saved him a lot of time spent in traveling. Prashant went from a mere 55% to 80% in 10th std. He wanted to pursue medicine but finally got into engineering. In his last year, he got placed in TCS, the only one from the mechanical branch in the overall 55 students that year.

Prashant always wanted to be into an administrative role and hence never quite liked the technical role. But he opted for TCS just to experience the Tata culture. He quit within a year and started preparing for his UPSC exams, first at Delhi, then Dharwad, Bangalore for one full year, and later for two years at Pune with his sister. He was inspired by his brother-in-law, Mr. Y.S. Patil who is now the DC of Vijaypura. He acknowledges the training at Chanakya Mandal and also at Dnyan Prabodhini at Pune.

Meanwhile, he attempted the mains thrice in KPSC and attended three interviews. The final attempt got him selected as the Dy. S. P. He had also cleared exams for Insurance, RTO CAT, PDO and Banking. All of this he achieved even before he hit his 30s. When prodded, on a lighter note, he adds that he took the Insurance job just to get married! His RTO stint was also special, with recruitment coming after 20 years, 11 posts and only one General Merit. He studied for this exam while commuting to and from Nipani, two hours each way. He expresses gratitude for his wife, who is herself an executive engineer in the PWD for those hard days.

He also cracked three mains in UPSC and attended two interviews. He joined as Dy.S.P. in October 2019. Being an engineer with experience in several sectors, he always wanted to be in administration because he says he wanted a bigger canvas to make an impact. Donning the uniform is a great feeling, he says.

The Channagiri sub-division was a newly carved one and Prashant grabbed this opportunity and established this office from scratch. Today, it has a full-fledged sub-division and around 250 policemen working under him. The current COVID challenge has been unforeseen, but he has handled it with elan. The rural population is equally affected as the urban one, he says. He has charted the route by seeking help from religious leaders who motivate the people to stay home and be safe. He also acknowledges the help of others like the Anganwadi staff, PDOs, health officials and his team. It’s always a coordinated effort, aided by local intelligence and local coordination, he adds. Speaking to the citizens, he has used the message to inspire them saying that “you are all police without uniform and I am a commoner with a uniform. So let’s work together to face this challenge”

Belagavi must indeed feel proud of Prashant who has inspired several students to study for the administrative services and also for the work he is currently doing. Someday soon, we could see him posted at Belagavi and that would complete the circle for this hard-working son of Belagavi.

Happy Birthday Dear Earth

$

0

On a serene evening, at one of the beautiful beaches of Goa having a brisk walk I could spot a lady (foreign national) at a distance picking up an empty water bottle lying on the shore and dumping it in the bin a few meters ahead. I could not resist myself, but to reach to her and thank her for her act. And her reply to my words was, it’s our duty to protect our Mother Earth and we should not be thanked but to make it as a part of our routine life just like brushing or taking bath.

It’s not that we Indians don’t care for nature, but we need to understand the same as a part of our basic duty to perform and imbibe the habit of it. Because this small act of sharing the concern for our ONLY planet goes a long way in making it liveable for all of us.

We all agree, that we have offered the best gift to our lady earth today (22 April 2020) by being indoors for almost a month (though it may be forceful) allowing the nature to heal itself, making the other species (on land, air, and water) to get their good old environment back eventually leading to clean water, clean air and much cleaner space for the entire human race. We are sure, that this is time-bound and once the lockdown is lifted, nature will take a hit again with our disastrous invasion.

But there is something which we can do to help our earth take a much lesser pain. And we need not have to be Superman or Wonder-women for this, but our simple acts can make a lot of difference if followed religiously on a day-to-day basis. Some of these would be;

a. Treating open roads or water bodies as dustbins and discarding things

b. Dumping of left-over things in open (especially when we go for a picnic in forest areas, mountains or on sea)

c. Switching off the mechanical or electrical products wherever possible

Though we have been regulated by the law of the land to stop using plastics (of a particular quality) and encourage usage of cloth-based bags, which is much possible for all of us. There have been guidelines also issued regularly by the government on optimum use of water and paper and all those things which will heavily impact the nature in one or the other formats.

Of course, the government has to come heavily on industries (dumping hazardous waste), wildlife poachers and all on all those entities/groups/individuals whose acts have a dreadful impact on nature. And the same needs to be done on priority after having studies showing Pangolins across India being killed and funneled through the North East, ultimately landing into China (Yunnan Province) which is a possible epicenter of this pandemic today.

It’s definitely our RIGHT to question or propose the government to amend laws to protect the environment, but in the process, we should not forget our DUTY towards our mother nature. We are damn sure; our Mother Earth is having a gala time today and it is our primary effort to give her the same in every possible way in the days to come. So, let’s pledge to do our part in not harming nature and also educate the others (by talks or acts) the need for the same.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOTHER EARTH, and thanks for giving us this life.

Testing of throat swab samples for COVID-19 at the ICMR National Institute of Traditional Medicine (NITM) (opposite KLE’s Dr.Prabhakar Kore Hospital) Belagavi was formally inaugurated on Thursday.

The laboratory is currently capable of testing 90 samples daily.

Scientists at the NITM lab successfully conducted reverse transcription polymer as a chain reaction (RT-PCR) of 11 samples on Wednesday.
