The theft of confiscated beer boxes by Excise officials has caused quite a stir in Belagavi. A total of 753 liquor boxes were seized from a transport vehicle near Modekoppa village in Khanapur taluk, but the very next day, 301 boxes went missing. It was later discovered that the officers and staff involved in the confiscation were responsible for the theft.
As a result, five staff members, including Excise Inspector Davalsaba Sindogi and Sadashiv Korti, as well as Excise Deputy Inspector Pushpa Gadadi, have been suspended. An FIR has also been registered against them.
This incident has raised serious concerns about the integrity of Excise officials and their ability to carry out their duties with honesty and professionalism.
The theft of confiscated goods is a serious offense and undermines the very purpose of confiscation. It is important that the public has faith in the authorities responsible for enforcing the law and that they are held accountable for their actions. The Excise department must take swift and decisive action to restore public trust and ensure that such incidents do not occur again.
On Friday, the central government exercised its special powers vested with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to cancel upcoming elections to 58 cantonment boards across the country, including the Belagavi Cantonment Board (PCB). The elections were scheduled to be held on April 30, and the MoD had issued a notification to hold elections across all 58 cantonments.
In an order dated March 17, Rakesh Mittal, Joint Secretary of the Government of India, stated that the central government rescinds the notification of the Government of India in the Ministry of Defence dated February 17, 2023, published in the Gazette Extraordinary Part II Section 4, except as respects things done or omitted to be done before such rescission. This action was taken in the exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section I of section 15 of the Cantonments Act 2006 (41 of 2006) read with section 21 of the General Clauses Act 1897.
The Cantonments Act 2006 provides for the establishment, administration, and governance of cantonments in India, and the central government has the power to issue orders and notifications related to the functioning of these cantonments.
It remains to be seen what impact this cancellation will have on the functioning of the Belagavi Cantonment Board and other affected cantonments.
Since Chef Ranveer Brar introduced the Kardant from Belagavi in Master Chef India, he has been the talk of the town and we found this wonderful post from his blog about his visit to Belagavi then, when he was introduced to Kardant, Alipak, and Mande amongst other delicacies.
This post – Time for Nostalgia – is from when he was visiting MK Swamy bakery as part of a Food tour, where he stopped near St.Paul’s high school Camp Belagavi.
The Chef says –
One day, while shooting for a show near a school in Belagavi, I ambled around watching the vendors that typically wait outside school gates. One elderly Bhutta vendor came over and handed me a bhutta saying – “तुम भुट्टा इतने प्यार से देख रहे थे.. लो खाओ” (“You were looking at the roasted corn so longingly, here…take one“), just that.. and he left.

As I walked near of St. Paul’s school in Camp Belagavi, a simple gesture from a street vendor triggered a flood of memories. It reminded me of the vendors outside his school in Lucknow, also named St. Paul’s. These vendors had a unique quality that Ranveer had never fully appreciated before. Perhaps it was because they dealt with children that they still retained a sense of innocence beyond the realm of business.
As kids, we never realized the patience with which they catered to the chaos around them. They would hand out their wares, such as chavanni (25 paise), and if we fell short of a few paise, they would coolly ask us to bring it the next day. They would even add extra portions of chooran, ber, or Ram laddoo to our paper bags as compliments. We would leave with a simple thank you, feeling lucky and happily munching away.
It was only later in life that we realized that these extra portions were part of how they made their living. As we move on in life, we reminisce about our school days, teachers, and friends, but we rarely remember these vendors. However, that day, standing outside another St. Paul’s nearly two decades later, a gentleman named Nizaam chacha stirred my emotions inexplicably.

This experience made me realize that we often overlook the small things in life that make a big difference. It’s important to appreciate the people who make our lives easier, even if they are just street vendors. They may not be remembered as vividly as our childhood friends, but they play an important role in shaping our memories.

A poorly constructed unscientific speed bump near a private school in Mahantesh Nagar Sector No. 12 of Belagavi has tragically claimed the life of a young man. The locals report that this speed bump was hastily erected only yesterday evening.
Late last night, 23-year-old Prateek Hongal, a resident of Mahantesh Nagar, lost control of his two-wheeler and collided with a tipper parked on the side of the road a few meters away. Unfortunately, the accident went unnoticed due to the late hour.
Around 5:30 in the morning, a local resident on their way to the temple discovered a young man lying on Road. As he did not have a phone with him, they were unable to call for help. When Prateek’s mother finally called on his phone, the passerby answered and told him about the accident and it was too late, and the young man had already passed away.

The residents of Mahantesh Nagar are outraged that unscientific speed bumps have been installed in many parts of the area, leading to frequent accidents and injuries. They have called on the authorities to take action and remove these dangerous obstacles. Additionally, they have demanded that vehicles, such as tippers, should not be parked on the roadside.
Prateek Hongal’s elder brother, who had recently completed his engineering studies and was working in a private company in Pune, is now mourning the loss of his younger brother. Prateek was living alone with his mother, and his untimely death left the family devastated. They are calling for immediate action to prevent others from suffering the same fate.
A case has been registered at Malamaruti Police Station, and the investigation is ongoing. It is imperative that the authorities take swift action to address the issue of dangerous speed bumps and prevent further loss of life.
Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, the Minister for Civil Aviation, has responded to Dr. Prabhakar Kore’s request for the restoration of flight services from Belagavi Airport by stating that airlines have the autonomy to offer more air services to certain destinations based on the traffic demand and commercial viability.
It is worth noting that Dr. Prabhakar Kore had previously written to the minister seeking his intervention in restoring flight services from Belagavi Airport.
The minister shared that currently, Indigo and Star Air operate 84 scheduled aircraft movements (arrivals and departures) per week to destinations such as Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Indore, Jodhpur, Nagpur, Surat, and Tirupati.
Belagavi Airport was identified as an underserved airport for the operation of flights under RCS-UDAN. M/s Alliance Air commenced UDAN flights between Belagavi & Pune, which were discontinued after completion of 3 year’s tenure. Thus, presently there is no operations exclusivity on the Belagavi-Pune-Belagavi route as per the provisions of UDAN scheme. M/s Ghodawat Enterprises Pvt. Ltd. commenced operations on Belagavi-Nasik Belagavi route, however, discontinued temporarily due to operational reasons. The airline has been instructed to re-commence the operations for ‘Belagavi-Nasik-Belagavi’.
UDAN flights between Belagavi and Mysore has been discontinued due to internal issues of the airline. The Belagavi to Delhi and Chennai route is beyond 600 Km stage length and therefore, does not fall under the purview of the UDAN scheme.
With regard to flight operation from Belagavi Airport, it may please by noted that for commercial flight operations, with the repeal of Air Corporations Act in March, 1994, the Indian domestic aviation was deregulated. It is, therefore, up to the airlines to provide air services to specific places depending upon the traffic demand and commercial viability subject to compliance with the extant guidelines in this regard. However, your request of flight operation from Belagavi Airport has been shared with all scheduled domestic airlines for favourable consideration.
Deputy Commissioner Belagavi Nitesh Patil has issued a temporary restriction on public and tourist entry to the Rajhans gad Fort area from March 21 to May 4.
This decision has been made in light of the ongoing development works in the area. One of the crucial projects involves the installation of granite stone paving on the road, which requires a dedicated 15-day timeline for completion.
Unfortunately, the daily influx of tourists and visitors has made it challenging to carry out the work in a systematic and efficient manner. Therefore, the restriction has been put in place to ensure that the development work can be completed without any hindrance.
This may cause inconvenience to some, but citizens are urged to cooperate with the administration in this matter. The development work is essential for the betterment of the Rajahans gad Fort area.
The 36-foot-high bronze statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj atop the Rajhuns gad was inaugurated by the BJP first then by the Congress and then a purification program was held by the MES which saw huge crowds at the Gad. Also, tourists thronged the fort to see the newly installed statue.
As the assembly elections approach, strict vigilance is being maintained across Belagavi district.
In fact, 24 inter-state border check posts have been set up on the Goa and Maharashtra border to ensure that everything runs smoothly. Out of these, four check posts are on the Goa border, while 20 are on the Maharashtra border, and all are already operational.
During a video conference on election preparations held on Tuesday (March 21) under the chairmanship of the State Chief Electoral Officer, DC Nitesh Patil revealed that a total of Rs 1.49 crore, including cash and liquor, was seized at the check posts across the district.
In addition, Patil instructed the commissioner of the corporation to remove unauthorized banners, posters, and graffiti as per the directives of the Election Commission. He emphasized that strict instructions should be given not to put up posters and banners without authorization. If they are not removed even after the notice, the fee for clearing them should be collected from the responsible parties.
Furthermore, after the implementation of the model code of conduct, every permission regarding election campaigns should be given by the electoral officers of the respective constituencies through a single watch system. In this regard, Patil suggested that a single inspection system should be prepared in coordination with the concerned department.
The City Police Commissioner Dr. MB Boralingaiah, District Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Harshal Bhoyer, and District Superintendent of Police Dr. Sanjiv Patil were also present during the conference.
The DC Belagavi Nitesh Patil, who is also the District Election Officer, said that Rs 9 lakh cash was seized at Kanbaragi check post on Tuesday (March 21), which was being carried without proper documentation.
Cash was found when the car which was going from Belagavi city towards Ankalagi was checked at Kanbaragi check post.
The cash belongs to a private finance company. But they do not provide adequate documents regarding the said money. Apart from this, it was found that the prescribed SOP regarding money transfer was also not followed.
The DC said that the said money has been seized and further action will be taken as per the rules.
He appreciated the work of the team of officers and staff who performed excellently at the check post.
DC Belagavi, Nitesh Patil, has issued a stern warning to all vehicle owners and passengers alike. It has come to his attention that some people are being transported in goods vehicles, which is strictly prohibited under the Motor Vehicles Act.
To ensure the safety of all citizens, the Election Commission has also taken a serious view of this matter. As a result, police and regional transport officials will be conducting intensive checks across the district from today onwards.
If any vehicle is found to be carrying passengers, it will be confiscated immediately, and a case will be registered against the owner. The DC has emphasized that even vehicle owners should not allow this practice, as it is a violation of the law.
We urge the public to refrain from traveling in goods vehicles for their own safety. Let us all work together to ensure that our roads are safe and secure for everyone.
Jayesh Pujari, also known as Jayesh Kantha, who is currently in Hindalga jail Belagavi on Tuesday, made another threatening call to senior BJP leader and Union minister Nitin Gadkari’s Khamla office, demanding Rs 10 crore in extortion money. This is a decrease from his previous demand of Rs 100 crore on January 14th of this year. Pujari warned of severe consequences if his demands were not met.
Nagpur City police chief Amitesh Kumar, who had previously increased Gadkari’s security after the first threat call, immediately alerted his counterparts in Belagavi and the Karnataka prison authorities. The Nagpur city police were able to trace the call and identify the caller through cyber experts, leading them to Pujari’s prison barrack once again. However, the police have not yet been able to locate the cellphone Pujari used to make the calls in January.
Kumar expressed surprise at how Pujari could obtain a second cellphone and SIM card in such a short amount of time. During his previous interrogation, it was discovered that Pujari had memorized the office numbers of the minister and other contacts.
Jayesh, who had previously claimed to be a member of the Dawood Ibrahim gang, has once again made the same claim. The Nagpur police team has already left for Belagavi to complete the necessary legal formalities. In 2008, Jayesh was sentenced to death for a murder during a dacoity, but the sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment.
During a call on Tuesday, Jayesh provided the mobile number of a woman from Bengaluru who works as an event manager to Gadkari’s office staff to make the payment he demanded. It is believed that her number was given to Jayesh by her ex-boyfriend. After a failed attempt, Jayesh managed to speak to Gadkari’s office staff at 10:53 am and again at 11:08 am.
The top cop stated that the caller’s primary objective seems to be engaging in something unlawful inside the prison to get a chance to step out for legal formalities.
It is concerning that Pujari was able to make another threatening call despite being in jail. The authorities must take swift action to ensure the safety of those targeted by his extortion attempts.
The city once took pride in having a series of wells both in private and public spaces. Quite apt since water is quite literally the lifeline of any society. Over the years, the infrastructure evolved with artificial elements replacing open soil and the impact on the ground water table is evident. What we could harvest from an open well now needs to be literally mined through borewells. The removal of vegetation, especially trees has further compounded the problems.
While we might be inclined to pass the blame to the administration, one really needs to think of how we are managing our own private spaces in our gardens, especially given that our own spaces constitute a significant portion of the landscape. Household compounds which once had trees are these days, devoid of these green blessings. In the name of ease of maintenance, we have replaced open soil in our gardens with either concrete or pavers.
Thus, when it rains, albeit for a brief period, we see flooding in low lying areas until the water eventually finds its way down the drain. The city despite having the luxury of a decent amount of rainfall, still struggles with the water availability issue.
Urban spaces, if properly planned can still be sustainable, should we have to common sense to put our mind to it. Before just blaming the administration, it would do a world of good to create uncovered soil in residential and institutional compounds and to add some trees and native plants to this private landscape.
Wake up Belagavi. It’s time for some green action.
As summer approaches, the scorching heat and the availability of clean drinking water become a major concern for everyone. Unfortunately, this year, the water woes have arrived earlier than expected, as the erratic water supply by L&T Belagavi has caused significant problems since February. The situation has been exacerbated by the fact that the current water level in Rakaskop has decreased compared to last year, due to less rainfall.
Interestingly, Dr. M. Vishveshwarayya, the mastermind behind the Rakaskop Scheme, had predicted this issue in his report’s preamble. He suggested that a chain of wells could maintain the Belagavi water supply. Before the Rakaskop scheme, the city relied on well water, with most of these wells being constructed during the British Raj, almost 100 to 200 years ago.
In 1964, the introduction of piped water in Belagavi left households uncertain about connecting to the pipeline. Despite efforts to persuade residents, they remained hesitant. The divisional commissioner at the time believed he had a solution to this problem. He ordered the closure of wells, hoping to force residents to connect to the pipeline. Ironically, 50 years later, the government had to work tirelessly to reopen these same wells.
The Open Well Project is a remarkable local initiative that leverages innovation to revolutionize public services, address a pressing local issue, and enhance the quality of life in a Tier II city. However, the focus has shifted towards bore wells, and both the government and residents are digging numerous bore wells independently.
The Open Well Project is a shining example of how local communities can come together to tackle local challenges. By harnessing local innovation, this initiative has the potential to transform public services and improve the lives of citizens in a Tier II city. However, despite its success, the project now faces a new challenge. The government and residents have shifted their focus towards bore wells, and many are digging them independently, without proper planning or oversight.
While bore wells may seem like a quick fix, they can have serious consequences for the environment and the community. The unregulated digging of bore wells can lead to groundwater depletion, soil erosion, and even land subsidence. Moreover, the lack of proper planning and management can result in conflicts over water resources and exacerbate existing social and economic inequalities.
To ensure sustainable development and equitable access to resources, it is crucial to prioritize the Open Well Project and other similar initiatives. By investing in local innovation and community-driven solutions, we can create a brighter future for all.
Instead of relying on borewells, the government should consider traditional wells that are 40-50 feet deep. These wells have the potential to yield four times more groundwater after rainfall than borewells. It’s important to recognize that drilling more borewells is not the solution to our water crisis. Instead, the government should invest in “dug wells” that can be constructed in just one month with the help of machinery and labor.
These wells, which can also serve as storage tanks, should be dug up to the soil zone while leaving the rock zone untouched. This approach allows water from the saturated soil to enter the well, which can then be used to recharge groundwater. By implementing this strategy, we can ensure that we have a reliable source of water even during times of drought.
It is imperative to recharge borewells, and it should be mandated by law. Recharging them is essential to ensure a sustainable supply of water. Therefore, it is necessary to make it compulsory for individuals and organizations to recharge their borewells regularly.
By implementing this requirement, we can ensure that our groundwater resources are conserved and protected for future generations. It is a small but significant step towards achieving a more sustainable and responsible use of our natural resources.
Let us all take responsibility for our water resources and make recharging of borewells a priority. Together, we can create a better and more sustainable future for ourselves and our planet.
To address the current water crisis, it is essential to explore alternative solutions and implement them promptly. The situation demands immediate attention, and the authorities must take necessary measures to ensure that the citizens of Belagavi have access to clean drinking water throughout the year.

During Covid, the administration had framed a set of guidelines to be followed by the citizens for their own welfare. Maintaining social distancing, wearing masks, avoiding public gatherings, and using sanitizers were a part of Covid Appropriate Behavior (CAB). However many people with the “My Life My Rules” attitude found great pleasure to flout the rules even after knowing that it may cost them their lives. Hence “Covid Marshals” were appointed to keep an eye on such ‘Khatron ke Khiladi’ and penalize them for not following the CAB. Agree that, today we may not want to remember those bitter covid days, but some learnings can be taken forward.
After the lockdown, we launched the ‘Stop the Drop’ campaign where a helpline number was provided for the citizens to report any water leakages. We visited the leakage sites with a team of plumbers and got them fixed. From Waghwade to Sambra, from Majgaon to Angol we traveled through every corner of the city fixing the leakages. After two months of extensive traveling, we could come to the conclusion that water is not just wasted in Belagavi but it is been abused. Yes, “abuse” is the word that means beyond wastage or wasting with fun.
Compared to neighboring cities, thankfully Belagavi is blessed with good water sources around and sufficient drinking water. However, anything that is easily available has less respect and we can see that happening with water also.
As per our observations, small reasons like broken taps, rusted pipes, damaged valves, and crack in tanks causing water wastage to a great extent were left unattended, and water kept on flowing in the drains. Gone are the days when people took efforts to hand pump the groundwater. Now, bore wells are fixed with overhead tanks pumping the groundwater at high speeds. People switch ON the motor but leave it to others to switch it OFF, no matter if it takes hours for anyone to notice the overflow and press the red button. People with good ‘influence’ have taken branches from these tanks to get the groundwater right at their doorstep. Little do they know that it takes several years for the groundwater formation and that they are playing with the country’s natural resource as if it is their ancestral property. Using groundwater or drinking water to wash vehicles or clean the roads using a pipeline was a common sight that was observed at many places. Very few people understand that if there is major water leakage in the supply system, it is our duty to inform the concerned department.
In line with the Covid Marshals, can the same idea be implemented for water? The administration can set some guidelines for the judicious usage of water and appoint Water Marshals to check for water being ‘abused’ and penalize the habitual violators. Surprise checks can be done at random locations not only to check wastage on citizens’ part but also to check for leakages in the supply system. Belagavi can be the first city in the country to introduce Water Marshals and set a benchmark for other cities.
As per the Environmental Management and Policy Research Institute (EMPRI), 17 districts in Karnataka are to be vulnerable to water crises in 2023 and Belagavi stands in the 9th place. Many areas in Belagavi are already facing acute water shortage crises in March and we still have April and May approaching.
Today, March 22 is observed as World Water Day. The theme for 2023 is about accelerating change to solve the water and sanitation crisis. And because water affects us all, we need everyone to take action. We and our families, institutions, organizations, and community can make a difference by changing the way we use, consume, and manage water in our daily lives.

The government of Karnataka is set to launch Belagavi as the global hub for drones and electric vehicles (EV) with the upcoming DRoEV-2023 event on March 24. This exciting initiative is part of the Beyond Bengaluru concept and will be held under the aegis of the Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM), which aims to develop industries in different parts of the state.
The KDEM sources have revealed that the primary objective of the event is to promote the existing industry in Belagavi and foster more collaborations with national and international players. The ultimate goal is to establish Belagavi as a global hub for the drone and EV industry.
Belagavi already boasts of component manufacturers for both industries, and the industry has been developed from the ground up. There are many success stories that have emerged from this region, and the government is keen to build on this momentum.
The DRoEV-2023 event is a significant step towards achieving this goal, and it is expected to attract a wide range of stakeholders, including industry leaders, investors, and policymakers. The event will provide a platform for showcasing the latest technologies, innovations, and products in the drone and EV industry.
By further pushing both industries in Belagavi, the results will multiply in a short period. This exciting prospect will be celebrated through a daylong, power-packed programme with over 200 participants, including industry leaders, policymakers, the research and development community, and startups.
During the event, around 20 stakeholders and sector experts will share their stories, providing valuable insights into the potential of these industries. Belagavi has already proven to be a fertile ecosystem for many emerging start-ups across the EV and drone industry, and the capabilities of this region are truly impressive.
To capitalize on this potential, KDEM will create a new industry cluster and host the launch event – DroEV-2023. This initiative will bring together the best minds in the industry to explore new opportunities, share knowledge, and drive innovation. With the support of the local community and the dedication of industry leaders, we are confident that this event will be a resounding success, paving the way for a brighter future for Belagavi and beyond.

This event promises to be an exciting and informative experience for all attendees. Don’t miss out on this chance to be a part of something truly groundbreaking!
The government’s vision for Belagavi as a global hub for drones and EVs is an exciting development that promises to create new opportunities for businesses and individuals alike. With the right support and investment, Belagavi could become a leading player in the global drone and EV industry, driving innovation and growth for years to come.
The Karnataka government is taking bold steps to transform Belagavi into a global hub for drones and electric vehicles (EVs). To achieve this goal, the government has dedicated 500 acres to this sunrise segment. The Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM) is leading the charge and is set to sign up the first batch of investors on Friday. The event, called DRoEV-2023, saw 200 stakeholders, including industry leaders, policymakers, the research and development community, and startups, participating in the exercise of setting up a new tech hub.
This initiative is part of the state government’s efforts to position emerging tech clusters from across the state on the digital global map by 2026.

The Rakskop Reservoir is a vital water source for Belagavi city, and it is important to keep track of its water levels.
Currently, the reservoir has water storage of 2461 feet, which is 4 feet less than last year’s storage at the same time. However, with a daily draw of 1.5 feet of water, the current storage is expected to last for 70 days, until the end of May.
It is crucial to use water sparingly to avoid depleting the reservoir’s storage. If the water levels drop too low, the dead storage must be pumped, which is not ideal. To address this issue, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor visited the reservoir to assess the situation and gather information from officials.

During the visit, officials confirmed sufficient water supply until the end of May. However, it is important to be mindful of our water usage to ensure that we have enough water for the future. Let us all do our part in conserving water and preserving this valuable resource.
