Retailers going the online way – Isha Silks

ishasilksRetailing in India is not just about only offline model or online, there is a huge gap between the two models that e-tailers are trying bridge by going hybrid- a combination of online & offline retailing. Handful of online portals like Firstcry, HealthKart, FabFurnish have taken their business offline as well, adopting the hybrid model to their retail strategy and there are many, going in the opposite direction setting up online stores.

As online retailing expands on the back of customer incentives and product discounts, brick and mortar chain stores as Isha Silks, Belgaum are reworking their Internet strategies to compete with e-tailers.

A Crisil Research report estimates that online retailing will become a Rs 50,000-crore industry by 2016.

IshaSilks, a Belgaum based retail store whose into the business of textiles since ages have now gone online with their website [www.ishasilks.com] designed by a Belgaum based Dotcord.

Speaking to AAB, Sachin Heda of Isha Silks, said “In the time to come the hybrid model of online and offiline will co-exist and we should be in a position to tap into this market. With huge estimates for online e-taling in the future maybe we are late but we have a great chance to get our exclusive products to a wider audience.”
“This could be the First e-commerce portal from Belgaum which is live and the initial response has been very encouraging” Sachin added.

Peeranwadi to Zad Shahpur road in shambles

Peeranwadi to Zad Shahpur road in shamblesIt looks like there is no Saviour for the Peeranwadi to Zad Shahpur road which is now into complete shambles since over 2 years. The NHAI on various occasions had promised to re-carpet the said road but nothing has happened on the ground. In August 2013, the Karnataka Road Development Corporation had been awarded the project of Rs.35 crore for this road expansion of the said road but no work progressed as expected.

Will our political clout look at this?

Blindman’s car rally – a charity drive to be conducted for the first time in Belgaum by Belgaum Royals Round Table 205

blind-rally belgaumEveryone has the right to life. Why should the visually impaired be denied the thrill of a car ride?

Have you ever seen a blind person showing direction to a car driver? If not, then you have an opportunity to witness it in Belgaum on Sunday, 16th March 2014. For the first time blind navigators from across Karnataka will guide drivers with normal vision across a 32 kms route.

The route map printed in Braille, will be handed over to the Blind navigator during flag off. They would use their skills to interpret the directions and guide the driver through the pre selected circuit across the city. The event will showcase to the participants the challenges faced by the visually impaired and their excellent skills in reading Braille. It will also empower the visually impaired and give them a chance to navigate and lead. Funds raised through the event will be used for building 6 classrooms for the underprivileged at Vantmuri village in Belgaum district.

Round table is an international organization of 18-40 years whose prime motto is service through fellowship. In India, Round table through its long term project “Freedom through education” works towards the cause of supporting education of the underprivileged children from the grass roots. Round table India builds school infrastructure towards supporting this cause and has been building an average of one classroom a day for the last 14 years. 4679 classrooms have been built impacting an estimated 51 lac children.

This unique rally being conducted in Belgaum is a part of Round Table India’s national charity event and is being organized in more than 20 cities in 2014. Tablers (members of Round table India) take pride in giving back to society. It’s not just the self satisfaction that they get but also learn better management of time, balancing business with social commitments.

This year’s maiden rally in Belgaum will have a maximum of 60 participants. It has been generously supported by its Platinum sponsor Fantasy Screens, silver sponsor Idea Telecom and other several co-sponsors. For registrations contact: +91 9353003030.

Belgaum ki holi!

Belgaum Holi

By Swatee Jog

The best thing about any festival is the celebration itself and if it can be done twice, all the more better and merrier. Belgaumites experience these double celebrations during Holi when half the city plays the colours the day after Holi and the rest do so after five days, on Rangpanchami day. Belgaumites are extremely courteous, peace loving and earnest people. Belgaum witnesses preparations for Holi  days in advance when the tiny temples of Holi Kamanna, situated at many small bylanes and even a big one sharing the wall with Shivaji Garden, get a facelift with whitewash.
Kids eased out of exam tensions wander around town with the sharp (but irritating at times) ‘timki’ in hand. One can be amazed at the accuracy and variety of ‘taals’ that they produce from this small percussion accessory!  They move around residential and commercial localities and collect donations for the burning of the Kamanna effigy. Some really smile-inducing cuss words  from these kids forms the key to loosen their purse strings!
Holi day witnesses the sounds of the timki reaching a crescendo and by evening the ritual of burning the stack of wood and dried tree branches symbolizing evil, is done. People offer puran poli, (which is a delicacy for this festival), to this fire as an offering to appease the fire Gods. Traditionally made from flour, horse gram and jaggery, it is now even prepared with Tur dal and sugar for purpose of ease. At some places like the Balaji Temple in Shahapur, this ritual is carried out in the morning and the embers burn for more than one day.

Traditional market areas like Shahapur Khade Bazaar, Maruti galli, Ganpat Galli are strewn with make-shift stalls selling powdered colours of all hues, especially red, yellow, blue, indigo and pink. Saree colour that stains your hands for days is much in demand, but many people are turning to the safer organic dry colours that don’t harm your skin or eyes. Also on display are attractive pieces of pichkaris, mostly in  the shape of guns. Tiny balloons that can be filled with coloured water and used for splashing are also on sale. This sale is in preparation for the next day, called dhulwad.  Except Shahapur, Vadgaon and Angol, the rest of the city plays with colours on the day after holi. This results in people from the former areas to be confined to their  homes. The reverse happens on the fifth day ( Rangpanchami) when these areas celebrate with colours and hence the working people have to leave homes early to avoid being smeared with colours. For years, this dual celebration has continued with no one thinking of unifying the same on one common day. Perhaps that is the unique attribute of our city!

belgaum holi

A new trend seen of late is that of stripping the clothes of the passersby and hanging them on the overhead electric wires. Notorious for this phenomenon are areas like Deshmukh Road and SPM Road. The whole city is awash with colours with even women venturing out in groups, knocking on friends’ doors and pulling them out. Many groups move about the city on bikes, shouting and enjoying the anonymity that colour-smeared faces offer. Many houses offer savories like Bhajis, samosas or wadas to friends who visit. By noon, the energy levels dip and people get back home to attempt washing the colour off their skin.

Holi in Belgaum stays true to its motive of burning off evil and merging all sections of society into one cauldron of colors. It also marks the beginning of pre-monsoon showers, heat and dust, heralds the coming of a new year, mangoes and everything cool. The weather is symbolic of India – warm, full of smells – of blooming flowers, sweet food, humid air and lots of smiles to perfect the arch of this wonderful rainbow.

Mind your Manners

by Swatee Jog

Youth is synonymous with enthusiasm, energy, freshness of ideas and fearlessness. But when you see these qualities manifest with a dash of arrogance and some airs bordering on brazenness, you know something is missing from all this youthful cheer. That missing aspect is sometimes the good manners. Manners are inculcated from childhood, through school and college. Much is talked about the impression that a well-mannered person makes. Why is it then that we frequently encounter youngsters who display minimal awareness about manners?

Humans are an evolved species. The faculty of speech has enhanced our quality of life like no other species in this world. It has also laid out certain rules and regulations in order to appear and sound polite, courteous, chivalrous or even plain kind, to others. Manners are this very action of everyday life that makes us appear ‘good’ and pleases the person we are interacting with.

Importance of manners:

Lessons in manners begin early in life. Parents teach the child to use golden words like ‘please’, ‘sorry’, ‘thank you’, ‘excuse me’, ‘may I’, etc. Students are expected to inculcate good manners from school days when the daily greeting of ‘Good morning teacher’ is fondly recalled long after school days are over. These manners are not just for school life but to be carried along throughout, even in your corporate life.

Manners are expressed in speech when the tone we speak in is genuinely polite and kind. The person we are interacting with picks up the feelings behind your speech and responds accordingly. Simple things like asking for a pen in a queue to fill a form can begin with “may I borrow your pen please?” which sounds far better than “Hey, give me that pen”

Students who unfailingly behave well -mannered get better response from their fellow students and faculty members. Teams perform better with leaders who are well-mannered and courteous because it eases tension, puts others at ease and irons out any misunderstandings between members. They are banked upon by their faculty members during crucial events for they have proved that they can take others along while getting the work done.

Persons with good manners appear courteous, caring for others and kind. They also come across as balanced. A person who immediately vacates his seat in the bus or train for the women or the elderly is looked at with respect by the fellow passengers. Making way for them in queues, helping them with their bags shows you are a genuinely good person.

Good manners are never situational. They have to be practiced every time, at school, office, homes, with friends, etc. Being punctual is one of them. Respect your time as also that of others around you. Keep your appointments to the dot, be present for the classes before the faculty enters, attend parties in time and don’t make the hosts wait for you. Genuine good manners and donning a mask of being good-mannered can be identified by others easily.

Don’t take people for granted. We share a lot of things with others, including the bus window or lights in the train, music at home, etc. Thinking about others’ comfort is paramount before we take these things for granted. Loudly talking in the train at night and enjoying with friends late into the night disturbs others sleeping.

Respecting women and the elderly goes a long way in shaping a person’s personality. Parents must inculcate this trait in their children from a small age. Helping them when they need, caring for their comfort and respecting them truly puts one into the right frame to be a good citizen.

Good mannered students stand out even in group discussions when one has to deal with a small group and yet stand out. Many times, candidates try to outsmart each other, dominating and even cutting the others’ sentences mid-way in an effort to look dynamic and aggressive. However, the HR professionals don’t get carried away with all the aggressiveness and the well-mannered candidate taking others along and using polite words to make a point, frequently stands out.

In this new age, manners have come to include Table Manners, Mobile Manners, Interview Manners, Meeting manners and more. Never beginning an answer with a negative word, not interrupting someone rudely, putting others’ comfort first as also respecting others’ opinion are all examples of good manners in the corporate world which can stand a person in good stead for leadership roles in the future.

Understanding cultural nuances of good manners is all the more important in today’s world. Something that is considered appropriate behavior in one place may be scorned at in another region or country. In an age when students routinely travel for education and employment, understanding the manners of the area is crucial.

How to imbibe good manners:

The process of imbibing good manners ideally begins from childhood. Parents, teachers at school, correct students when they go wrong and teach them the appropriate way of good behavior. However, at times, it may become necessary to understand good manners afresh when one’s behavior and lack of good manners comes under the scanner through informal feedback or personal observations. At other times, special circumstances may make it necessary to imbibe manners. At such times, it is always advisable to read literature, observe seniors carefully and see how they behave and the response that they get from their teams.

Make it a habit to never lose cool even in trying circumstances and to use polite words at all times. Practice this habit from home and it will become a way of life everywhere. It requires some conditioning of the mind to change our behavior initially.

Watch videos of personalities like Narayan Murthy, Bill Gates or Ratan Tata and understand how they behave and carry themselves amidst statesmen, journalists or even when they interact with laymen or school children. Their behavior never changes, nor do they lose cool and always respect others. Try to inculcate these qualities in everyday life.

Make a note of frequent everyday situations and jot down the ideal pleasantries, greetings, initiating words or appropriate answers. Practice with friends or before a mirror to get the tone and body language perfect. Good manners come into picture while asking questions, replying to others’ questions, criticizing, greeting, reporting, praising, etc.

Following good manners makes us confident, pleasing, friendly and socially acceptable. It also helps us break ice with new teams or with strangers. In a fiercely competitive world, a person who has all the capabilities and one who is well-mannered is much valued. Good manners must never be practiced with the benefits in mind but must become a part of your personality and a way of life.

Belgaum Ashwathama Temple Lotangan

Belgaum Ashwathama Temple Lotangan

It is said that the Ashwathama Temple in Pangul Galli in the city is the sole temple in the whole of India.

There is an annual fest on the second day after Holi, which was yesterday. All devotes do a “Lotangan” and water is thrown on the devotees from all the houses.

In Pangul galli, a large number devotees performed “Lotangan puja” (“urulu seve”) at Ashwathama temple. It is believed that people do the Lotangan after their wish has been granted by the lord. The temple in the narrow street of Pangul Galli houses the idol of the cursed mythical warrior. A large number of devotees made a beeline to perform the lotangan, even as onlookers kept splashing ‘gulal’ on them.

A special pooja was also performed and the temple committee distributed prasad. However, not many visit this shrine during rest of the year thanks to the curse attached to Ashwathama, who was believed to have killed the sons of the Pandavas. It is believed that seeing the idol brings bad luck.

Holi Celebrations in Belgaum at Holi Milan program

Men, women and children came out in groups, splashed colours and greeted each other and danced to the drumbeats. In Pangul galli, a large number of revelers and devotees performed “Lotangan puja” (“urulu seve”) at Ashwathama temple.

Celebrations galore, colourful and extravagant. Heedless of the soaring mercury, the citizens of Belgaum had a wonderful day with friends, relatives and even strangers. It’s one of those festivals that facilitates reaching out to those previously unknown and leaves behind memories to cherish.

The Deshmukh road, the site of all the mis-happenings (once), was a place where youngsters assembled or moved around splashing colourful impressions on each other. The sad part of the ritual was the number of individuals who tore away each other’s clothes and tossed them up to hang on electric wires that ran through and across the top of the streets. It used to be a saddening display of a behaviour most deplorable and unpalatable to anyone who has some degree of education and civic sense.
It was a refreshing change when over the past years, the said practise was abandoned and HESCOM was spared of the task of having to clean up the mess. Thanks to the initiative of the local MLA, the public celebrations moved to Subhash Chandra Bose Ground and that too with a police presence, enough to bring some discipline to the revelry.
When the same happened this year and the satisfaction of the city having evolved to a more sensible conduct was just beginning to seep in, the pictures of the celebrations at Lele Ground emerged. It was appalling to say the least that the heap of torn clothes had only shifted location and the litter had moved to the confines of the ground and areas around it.

Belgaum Fort moat awaiting for its makeover

belgaum-fort

Belgaum fort moat filled with weed

The historic fort of Belgaum built in 13 century (Originally built by the Ratta dynasty, later fortified by Yakub Ali Khan of the Bijapur Sultanate) was well known for its unique building structure and its huge moat surrounding the fort, which made it inaccessible to the enemies. The Belgaum fort served as a bulwark against the attacks of invading armies. It steadfastly held fort as Belgaum played host to a multitude of dynasties, from the Rattas, the Vijayanagar emperors, Bijapur Sultans, Marathas and finally the British.

In January 2010 a makeover plan was made for Rs.10 crore to repair the boundary walls and clean up the moat which is now filled up with mud and bushes. But nothing seems to be visible in reality. In 2012 aswell a plan was made but nothing changed in reality.

The fort stands, it forms an irregular oval, enclosed by a deep ditch, which is cut out of a softish red stone, which hardens on being exposed to the air. The exterior of the fort is surrounded by a fine broad esplanade; the revetment rises about thirty-two feet above the bottom of the ditch. The interior is level, and extends about a thousand yards in length, by eight hundred in breadth. The original entrance was made between two magnificent battlemented bastions, which still exist, although the gate, which once opened upon a bridge, has been walled up. The present main gate, which is a solid pile of building, is considered to be a fine specimen of Indian architecture.

It must at that time have been a place of strength, as it is mentioned in history as being protected by strong towers and lofty walls, guarded by a deep wet ditch, and by a pass near to it, the only approach to which was fortified by re doubts.

Even the old-aged among the city’s population may not have seen it filled to the brim.

The administration and our elected representatives must take such matters on priority to make this a tourist destination as other similar forts with moat in Vellore and Jaipur have been desilted, cleaned and water filled. The moat filled with water would attract more tourists. It will also benefit the surroundings. It will help recharge the wells and ponds.

The revival of the water channel and introduction of boating, water sports and recreational facilities along the circle would change the landscape of this place.

AAB had written about the state of the boundary walls of the fort on 08 January 2010, Belgaum Fort loosing its grandeur.

Belgaum gets a New CDP plan

The 18 years waiting period for a new CDP – Comprehensive Development Plan for the city envisaged as master plan 2021 has been approved by the ministry of urban development recently.

A new CDP has to be prepared by the BUDA every 10 years but due to various reasons the said plan was not prepared or approved.

Master plans are expected to envisage and determine what the city will look like through the targeted period. The city is bursting at its seams, and its potholed roads, lack of pavements, overflowing garbage and traffic jams make a mockery of planned development.
Though meant to be a vision document, CDP has failed to foresee the city’s spread, and what it needs by way of supporting infrastructure.
