Activists stop wedding after Groom is found to be HIV positive

It is common in Indian families that they check kundali, family background, financial and social status of the boy or girl before marriage. But it is very rare that the bride and groom undergo a complete health check up before they move forward to lead a new life.

Thanks to the timely intervention of the social activists who were able to stop a wedding when they found that the groom is HIV positive but he hadn’t disclosed the same to his parents.

Safala Nagaratna of Ashraya Foundation Belagavi is one such victim who is suffering for no fault of hers. When she first came to know that she was HIV positive she felt like it was end to her life. She has been living with it for the past 20 years now.

On Tuesday, Nagaratna along with spandana network staff and ART center staff rescued a girl who would be suffering like her later. A boy from village who is HIV positive but he did not disclose this to his parents and agreed for marriage.

On getting this information, Nagaratna with the help of district TB officer Shailaja Tippannavar struggled for two days to counseling and convincing the families of bride and groom about the forthcoming dangers to be faced by both.
According to the new bill of government the bride or groom who hide the HIV status during marriage will be jailed for five years. She succeeded in this and saved the innocent girl from spoiling of her life.

Speaking to AAB, Nagaratna said that parents usually checks kundali and family status before fixing marriage but never thinks of conducting health check ups. But this tendency has to be changed and every parent must get the HIV test done before they fix up the marriage as it is better for them only.

No major hurdles for restoration of Belagavi fort

After many assurances over the past decade, we could say finally the most neglected historic Belagavi fort will be restored in way that it looked in 800 years ago under the Belagavi smart city project(SCP). Apart from restoration of fort, rejuvenation of moat around the fort, boating in the moat, garden in front of fort and other beautification works have been planned. Belagavi smart city (BSCL) Ltd. has prepared an action plan to take up these works in first phase.

BSCL has prepared an action plan with an estimated cost of Rs 25 crore plan giving title ‘fort and moat’ to it in the first phase on priority basis.

Ancient Kamal basadi, centuries old Shivalayas, Ramakrishna mission Ashram, Durgadevi temple, Safa and Jamia Mosque, Military canteen and quarter’s, school, central and state governments various departments are situated in inside the fort.

Provisions have been made to beautify the fort from the inside, the open areas in the fort which is spread over in 1 km radius. The moat surrounded to fort is planned to clean and rejuvenated.

belgaum-fort
Belgaum fort moat filled with weed

A pipeline will be laid from Fort lake to this moat so that the moat will get filled with water. SCP has Plans to provide boating facility in this moat. Then it has planned to restore the broken walls, bastions, entry gates and other ruin parts of the fort by maintaining its old, rich glory. The existing walking track and the old proposed plan of museum will also be developed under this plan. The inside part of fort will be beautified by installing variety of hitech street lamp, park, laser show and many more things.

Presently, the waste drain water is being released in the moat and the waste unsold vegetable is being dumped by wholesale vegetable vendors as well. Thus the moat has turned filthy and spreading bad odor in the area. The walls and bastions have got many cracks and it also collapsed in some parts. weeds are grown over the walls. It was many years demand that the fort should be restored and make it tourist spot.

Historian Nitin Khot said it is many decades fight to restore this ancient fort. But since it is in cantonment board limits, the army is not allowing for single development. funds were allocated many a times, but lapsed as the army is not giving permission. It is good opportunity this time to authority as the smart city is central government’s program and cantonment board works under central governments guidelines.

Shashidhar Kurer, MD smart city Ltd. said some part of fort comes under purview of archaeological survey of India (ASI) and rest under cantonment board. We have made communication with both the offices and they have no problems with this project. Survey of work has been completed. We will be taking in in writing with both the Offices before starting the work. However the territorial army (TA) has not allowed for any works in the area where they having offices in fort. Hence that part area will be left from this work project presently. The action Plan is ready and we are expecting the work to start in a month he said.

All said and done, but the work has yet to commence and as the monsoon is approaching we hardly feel any work would be commenced. So the wait for the restoration will be definitely more.

JSW steel plans to buy 878 acres of land in Gavali Village Khanapur

There has been a public notice issued in newspapers which have got us amazed; the notice issued by a local advocate here in Belagavi states that,

JSW Steel Ltd., Sandur Bellary intends to purchase property bearing RS 71 & 72 which totally ad-measuring 878.01 acres situated in Gavali village of Gunji Hobli, Khanapur Taluka from in all about 86 joint owners. If anyone has any tittle or right on the aforesaid land they have been informed to state claims.

jsw-notice

Sources say Survey no 71&72 are steep slopes covered with thick semi tropical rain forest & forms watershed for Mahadayi river. It’s inside Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary but private land. Starting from Vajara poha waterfalls to BHIMGAD. It forms an important part of wildlife area & Tiger movement trails.

Basavaraj patil, DFO said that this matter has not came into his notice. However he said that JSW company was in search of land for the plantation of trees. According to the central governments regulations, if a company has bought 100 acre lands for industry they again have to buy 100 acre land for tree plantations. So I was aware that they were in search of such land. But I have not come across that they are trying to purchase land in Khanapur taluk he said.

Gavali is one of a dozen villages and hamlets located in what is now the Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary in north-western Karnataka. Less than 200 people are regular residents, away from the busy world of roads, electricity or doctors. Villagers are often faced with wild animals that eat away crops and even attack humans.

About 400 Liquor shops will have to shift elsewhere or shut by June 30

As many as 400 liquor shops, situated near national highways and state highways face closure following Supreme Court ruling which has banned sale of liquor within 500 meters from highways. Other states already implemented the same, in Karnataka the excise licence to most of the liquor shops along highways were issued prior to December 15 last year and they will remain operational till June 30.

According to Excise Department Officials as many as 205 CL2 (retail shops with licensees for vending liquor but not serving liquor on the premises), nine establishments CL4 (Clubs) licenses including four in Belagavi North zone, a star hotel having CL 6A (Star Hotels) license, 47 establishments with CL7 license (Lodging Houses), 99 establishments having CL9 license (Bar & Restaurant) and 17 Mysore Sales International Limited (MSIL) LIQUOR SHOPS FUNCTIONING IN 500 METRE DISTANCE.

A total of 650 authorized bars are having licence from excise department in Belagavi District.

According to sources the shops and Bars from Bachi Raichur Highway (Near Shankam) towards Ashok Circle, Sangolli Rayanna Circle, Chenamma Circle and Club road and ahead which are on the Bachi Raichur Highway could be affected with this ban.

Bars after Fish Market then over bridge, RPD, Khanapur Road, Peeranwadi, uipto Khanapur will also be affected as they are on the NH 4A.

The above are just based one the earlier surveys.

While the state government is worried about loosing heavy revenue due to closure of these alcohol shops, the owners too are also not sure that they will be getting new space at 500 meters away from highways.

A few bar owners have already got alternate sites ready for them while a few are still unable to find a new site which has a lot paper work and permission issues.

If the licence holder has shifted his bar 500 meters away from highway before June 30, his licence will be renewed and if he didn’t, his licence will be canceled according to sources.

Suresh Hundre-Living the Difference

First published on May 23, 2013

The first thing that struck you when you entered Polyhydron was the board that said ‘Keep your ego and footwear outside’. Seeing the Managing Director donning the company uniform, sitting on a simple table and chair, his workstation strewn with neatly arranged Knick knacks amidst Swami Vivekanand quotes, came as a surprise for the first time.

suresh hundreOne could never stray in conversation with him. He valued your times more than his own, perhaps. Meeting him on multiple occasions was a revelation of sorts. His chamber had an enviable collection of books and the ‘Music of Business’ that he gifted me stands a place of pride in my collection. He deftly handled his large screen computers, poring into details, excusing himself till the work at hand was done. Our conversation would always be focused. As part of a B-school, we could visit Business Ashram multiple times and still recall one occasion when rains loomed in the skies and he still managed to reach the Ashram in time just so that he could interact with our students. ‘Keep your footwear in that room, or they will get wet’ he advised them.

Our institute, Bharatesh Global Business School, felicitated him last year during The HR Conclave which had the theme ‘Employee first, Customer next’. He was felicitated at the hands of Mr. Rajeev Kapoor, President and CEO of Fiat Automobiles. Polyhydron’s Wealth Distribution System is worth emulating by all business houses. He shared a part of the company’s profits with the employees, never encouraged over time ( Work hard for 8 hours and then go and enjoy life was his simple ‘work-life balance’ mantra!) Hearing him speak about his Reva was another experience. Why he chose to buy the Reva over an SUV, how it saved him thousands, was not just about speaking, he flaunted the savings proudly on his car as well! How many of us would do that?

He was always all ears for any new thing that you’d want to share. Sharing Clayton Christensen’s ‘How would you measure your life’ , he showed his new book that he was reading, by a relatively new author in Marathi, on the same subject. Then for the next few minutes, you could witness his thoughts on life. Then he shared his formula for a happy life. He said happiness in life was inversely proportional to expectations. The more you expect from life, the less happy you are and vice Versa. There’s a difference between ‘ not being happy’ and ‘being sad’, he clarified, wheeling happily from his chair on which he lay confined while he had fractured his leg. One could see the pain, not of the fracture, but of the built up nervous energy of not being able to move freely.

The passion with which he spoke about his company, his work ethics, employee policies, was akin to a parent speaking about his child. To him, business and ethics were synonymous and he stayed true to his beliefs, even sounding eccentric at times. There were many who may have wanted to live life the way he did, but for sure, few will be able to.

It was a proud moment for us when he invited us to come for a special Sunday morning gathering with a select few who would share the best of books and experiences. This meet was timed at 6.30 on Sundays, so that only those who passionately felt, would come. He said he’d let us know when. We’re left waiting.

JSW clarifies that Bhimgad land is for Compensatory afforestation

JSW steel plans to buy 878 acres of land in Gavali Village Khanapur, after we broke this story the JSW Steel has issued a statement and as per the New Indian Express it denied that it was proposing to set up a steel plant near Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary in Belagavi district, and further said the land it was proposing to purchase was for the purpose of compensatory afforestation.

JSW Steel had issued a public notice in some newspapers saying it intends to buy about 878 acres in Gavali village of Khanapur taluk from about 86 joint owners.

Compensatory afforestation is one of the most important conditions stipulated by the Central Government while approving proposals of diversion of forest land for non-forest uses. The company has got approvals from the Government of Karnataka to conduct iron ore mining operations in 5 of the already cancelled mines of Category ‘C’ in Ballari-Hospet region,” the statement said.

Accordingly, the company is obligated to identify and purchase lands for compensatory afforestation over equivalent area of non-forest land,” the company said. It said the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest has stipulated that as far as possible the land for compensatory afforestation should be identified contiguous to or in the proximity of reserved forest or protected forest.

The lands to be procured will actually be added to the area of the Bhimgad Sanctuary. Rather than harming the cause of forests, our land purchase will actually increase the forest cover. There is also no intention of the company to use these lands for industrial purpose at all,” it said.
