There is some good news for the citizens as they can now pay their electricity bills of HESCOM via Paytm as well.
The Any time payment machines of HESCOM were disabled since a month and it has been a nightmare for the citizens to stand in long queues to pay their bills.
The online payment facility on Hescom.co is available but not all make use of it and also there is a payment fee of min Rs.5.75 per transaction.
Now with the bill payment enabled via Paytm, there would be no extra charges to be paid hence it will be very beneficial for all, just you will need to have a Paytm account.
The process is very simple, log on to Paytm.com or use the App and select the Electricity icon, select HESCOM, enter your consumer code and it will retrieve your bill with name and other details.
Go ahead and make the payment. Remember to make the payment atleast 2 days before the due date as HESCOM will take two working days to consider bill paid in their accounts.
And yes of course select the coupons on Paytm before u make the payment.

“Necessity is the mother of invention” and a passion to do something is the essence of life and it has truly been lived by Girish Basappa Dodagoudar of Ammanagi,Taluka Hukkeri.
A B.Sc. From Karnataka University works as a Lab Technician in Engineering Physics Department at Hirasugar Institute of Technology, but he is always fascinated by machines especially the excavator (JCB type)and the cranes.
While helping his parents in agriculture he saw that there were many things which could be done at a faster pace and in a better manner, but lack of funds was the biggest constraint. So he decided to make a few instruments which would help farming.
Water being the most important resource for farming, storing and getting water was the key and digging a well would cost about 7 lakhs.
So Girish thought of making an excavator and a supporting crane so that the well could be dug up early. He used all the easily available material in the village which was basically scrap and turned into a working mechanical device.
He began to work on it from 2014 and now he is reaping the fruits. He designed Drilling machine, Welding Transformer, Cutting machines & also generated the electrical power supply and bought some old hydraulics from nearby vendor.
After spending 3 years and about 2.5 lakhs he is now using the excavator and the crane at his farm and even nearby fields.
Truly an example of Make in India, and what India can really make.

Biryani is an evergreen classic that really needs no introduction. With local and hyperlocal variations having evolved into distinctive styles of Biryani’s, one is spoilt for options when it comes to experiencing this melting pot of flavours.
Biryani is derived from the Persian word Birian, which means ‘fried before cooking’ and Birinj, the Persian word for rice. While there are multiple theories about how Biryani made its way to India, it is generally accepted that it originated in West Asia.
In general, there are two types the Kutchi (raw) Biryani and the Pukki (cooked) Biryani. In Kutchi Biryani, the meat is layered with raw rice in a handi (a thick bottomed pot) and cooked, while in Pukki Biryani cooked meat and rice are layered in the handi, where they come together in a marriage of flavours.
With many Unique’s to its name, Belagavi has it unique flavors of Briyani served at almost all the hotels and each one has its own unique taste of its own and mostly a bestseller. Not two Biryani’s from different hotels will taste the same. It may not have a name of its own but the blending of creamy milk with roasted nuts and aromatic spices results in a dish that is subtle, refined, and delicately flavored.
When we began the search for the Belagavi Biryani, we came across various restaurants small and big who make lip smacking Biryani in their own style since ages.
Karim & Tinwale were the pioneers of Biryani in the city in a commercial way. Wahab could also be added to that list who used to sell only in bulk.
There are several household which preserve their untraditional recipes, every Belagavite must have come across a Muslim friend who’s mom has sent him Biryani on Eid and she always gets is right. Biryani is not a recipe which can be adapted out of a book but requires experience acquired over years. The amount of saffron, the measures of condiments, the proportion of rice and meat is to be perfected by practice.
They say a good Biryani has few features, the aroma is appetizing, the rice grains do not stick to each other nor to your hands, the meat must absorb all the flavours and should melt in your mouth, it should not leave you bloated after eating.
A unique element in the Belagavi Biryani is the Belgaum Basmati rice, it’s unique flavor is appetizing, sadly the rice is being fast replaced by the Delhi rice.
Each hotel has its unique marination technique and we guess is this must be the important element in the making of the Biryani.
Chatni served along with Biryani at many places
The accompaniment of the Biryani also needs perfection, the chatni and the sherwa are as important as the main dish itself.
Zuber Biryani
What’s adds to the taste of Belgaum Biryani which distinguishes it from the Biryani’s at other places is the taste of Belgaum water which naturally is believed to be tasty comparatively.
We have Different choices in Biryani, some like Mutton Biryani of Khyber(College Road), others prefer the Chicken Biryani of Niyaz or the Prawns Biryani of La Camp(Picket road Camp) or Biryani from Bawarchi (Off College road in the alley after Khyber) or the Zuber’s Biryani (Kaktives). We also have the Bamboo Biryani (High Street, Congress Road) cooked up in a Bamboo. The Hyderabadi Biryani(Congress Road) its a franchisee of the famous Hyderabd Paradise Kitchen.
Donne Biryani
Vegetarians are not too far away from being Biryani Fans. They too have their own Flavour in Veg Biryani of Saffron or Madhuvan. It all ends up in what one likes to have in which way Spicy, Sweetish, Mild.
Not only the big hotels small eateries as well have their own recipe of the Biryani which is unique to its self. Yeshwant Boarding(Kelkar Bag) makes the Biryani which is more like a Mutton Pulao. There was Mahadev (Kaktives) has its unique taste of its own. The Savji Biryani is another new flavor to the Biryani stable. The marination is unique which gives it a very distinct taste. We also many small Biryani corners which make Biryani.
The Biryani from Charminar(Khade Bazar), or may be from Zuber, Khyber, Paraat wali, Donne, Bawarchi all have a distinct taste and fan following.
The ParatWali Biryani made in Sun n Sand & Habba is also a favorite amongst many which is cooked on the Tava. The Bhori Biryani made by Barafwala which is very mild in flavours but has a very distinct taste of its own due to the spices.
Bamboo Biryani at High Street
There are also the Home Made Biryani which are made to order only by Tinwala, Shafi Attar, Katal to name a few.
In Belagavi, Biryani is not merely food, it is a bond between friends, it’s a memory for some and an adventure for many, where a lot can happen over coffee, Belagavi is a place where a lot can happen over Biryani as well.

It is that time of the year when the anxiety is quite high. With predictability having become a thing of the past, its often a common occurrence each year that the seasonal transition rarely happens in advance or in time. The period of an uncertain spell of waiting is as agonizing for me as it is for my citizens. After all, as I have said earlier, what happens to them is what happens to me.
Welcome to Belagavi aka Belgaum, erstwhile Venugram. My story continues.
File photo – Arun
The warmth of my yesterday’s summers has been replaced by the searing heat of the scorching sun and as the mercury sores for the good old early thirties to the late thirties, its painful for me and the flora and fauna that are an integral part of my self. They say its global warming, an eventuality of the excesses of deforestation that make barren land out of lush green forests. The parched soil with its cracked surface and fissures, says it all. While I continue to harp on the need to decorate the cleared spaces with a well planned sequence of trees, I am internally sure and scared that the pleas will fall to deaf ears lost in the drudgery of routine.
The MET department has made its official announcement about a good monsoon. Not that I wish the said fate for by kith and kin spread across the expanse of this wonderful country but then like its for humans, its always tempting for me to say Not on Me.

There have been intermittent showers accompanied by the rumble but now its high time that the rain bearing clouds do their act. As I join my citizens in praying for respite, I will the El Nino or whatever phenomenon of nature that rules the roost, be kind to the human folk and relieve them from the scorching inconvenience. Rain often soothes my spaces around the 7th June and this is the tradition and promise which I hope they live up to, even this year. I also am hopeful that the initial spell is not succeeded by a dry one.
As I continue my hopeful glances towards wet blessings quite literally from the heavens above, lets hope that we have a wonderful spell of cool showers to last a few months. May the citizens find enough sense and commitment to make more than a formality of planting trees to restore what has been taken away. May the air conditioners and fans cease their duties for a long long time and may we all be lucky enough to experience the biting cold of the monsoons that makes me a unique habitat.
Here’s wishing everyone a happy and really wet Monsoon…..
Oh Monsoon….. come soon……

The issue of the Sewage treatment plant (STP) to be built near Halga was raised at the Council meeting of the city corporation today. At the same time hundreds of farmers were protesting outside the Corporation demanding that the STP be shifted to another area which is barren land.
MLA Belagavi Rural Sanjay Patil raised this issue at the begining of the meeting itself.
MLA Sanjay Patil said the people of of Halga have have already given up their land for various projects including the Suvarna Soudha, but when it comes to safeguard the farmers the corporation never comes ahead to solve their issues.
The villagers who are gave up the land for Rakaskop dam, are not getting NOC from corporation for drinking water supply from dam. Corporation should consider the plea of farmers and asked to pass a resolution to shift the STP project to Alarwad.
Corporation commissioner Shashidhar Kurer said Belagavi has 53% of UGD lines but there is no STP. Hence it is very essential to develop the plant in Belagavi immediately. The sewage water is being released to Ballari Nala and Markandey river due to which various health hazards are on the rise.
Corporation has given as affidavit to the Court for construction of STP and hence the revenue department acquired 19.20 acre land at Halga after the committee approved the location which comprised of Sanjay Patil, Sambhaji Patil and Feroz Saith.
MLA Sanjay Patil said that as there is a lot of resentment from the farmers to give up their fertile lands, we must all honor them by shifting the STP to Alarwad by passing a new resolution to that effect.

Come the holy month of Ramazan and the picture changes to more picturesque nightly scenes. It is the time of the year when harmony and acceptance beyond the sectarian define descends onto the streets. The streets are suddenly more alive to the occasion rather than the clock and the silence of the night translates into the hustle bustle of friends on the street.
Darbar Galli turns itself into a food street since the evening and remains so until the morning. The only difference this is the location of the various stalls that are put up during this month of Ramzan will now be in the centre of Darbar Galli after its widening.
All the stalls in the centre of the Darbar Galli
Every time the stall used to be put on the each side of the street and the vendors had to pay a hefty rentals to the house and shop owners. But this time sources say, MLA Saith said why not put all the stalls on the centre of the road by which there will be room on each side for citizens to pass and it will be more convenient for both the foodies and vendors.
