Mr.Harihar was a theatre owner and the meetings used to take place at the Ritz theatre (now Lokmanya Rang Mandir in Konwal Galli, near Tilak Chowk.)

Pu La Deshpande’s speech during a Kannada Sahitya Sabha in Pune and his thoughts on the Belgaum border issue are quite humbling… “Maharashtra and Karnataka are political entities while Marathi and Kannadiga are cultural entities… you have meeting lines in the later case and borders in the former… one welcomes each other… the other say don’t enter!”

He was born on 8 November 1919 in Mumbai. He has been awarded the prestigious awards like Padmashri, Padmabhushan, Maharashtra Bhushan, Sahitya Academy, Sangeet Natak Akademi. His work was dedicated in various fields like Drama, Literature, Music Humour, Philosophy and Broadcasting. P. L. Deshpande will be remembered in the newer generation for his Humorous books like Batatyachi Chal(बटाट्याची चाळ), Asa mi Asa mi (असा मी असामी), Vakti ani Valli (व्यक्ती आणि वल्ली), Varyavarachi Varat (वार्‍यावरची वरात), Bigari te Matrik (बिगरी ते मॅट्रिक), Hari Tatya (हरी तात्या), Mhais (म्हैस), Mi aani maza shatrupaksha (मी आणी माझा शत्रुपक्ष), Paliv Prani (पाळीव प्राणी), Panwala (पानवाला), Kahi nave grahayog (काही नवे ग्रहयोग), maze paushtik jeevan (माझे पौष्टीक जिवन), and many more.

Some of his movies include are कुबेर (Kuber), भाग्यरेषा (Bhagyaresha), वंदेमातरम्(Vande mataram), जागा भाड्याने देणे आहे(Jaga bhadyane dene aahe), मानाचे पान(manache paan), मोठी माणसे(mothi manase), गोकुळचा राजा(gokulacha raja), जरा जपून(jara japun), नवरा बायको(nawara bayako) and पुढचे पाऊल (pudhache paool). The Spunky and intelligent Tarika Gulabani

Her energy is infectious. The moment she walks in, you are struck by two things; her style – modern yet underplayed and her clear smile that reflects her soul. Meeting Tarika Gulabani was a pleasant surprise. She is everything that one assumes Belgaum girls can rarely do. It must have helped that she is a Sindhi, a community with an innate fire-in-the-belly to make it big in business, but that is just being presumptuous. After you’ve spent like, a couple of hours with her, you start to understand that this girl is all about focus, intellect, guts and hard work.

Tarika GulabaniShe works with Zee TV as a producer for shows like Deal or No Deal (reality game show), Agent Raghav (finite fiction series), &tv Holi event,The Voice India Kids, & It’s Diwali (Diwali event), The Voice of India Season 2, and is also working on developing two new reality shows. Quite a lot, considering she’s been at Zee only since 2015. ‘Time is my biggest challenge’ she says, referring to her erratic and unpredictable schedules at work.

Her day begins at 7 in the morning and ends at 2 in the night. ‘You tend to forget you’re a human when you’re working this kind’ she says with a hearty laugh that amply shows she enjoys whatever she’s doing. An alumnus of St. Joseph’s (and it is clear within the first 10 seconds!), GSS, Jain College where she did her BBA and Manipal Uniersity’s School of Communication where she did her MA in Corporate Communication, Tarika’s career trajectory has been well planned.

She owes a lot of her success at a young age to the internships that she did in college and post education. MRF Tyres, Coffee Day Express and JWT are names that mean real-time work experience as an intern. Dance, modeling, editing for her University’s newsletter, anchoring, she’s done everything that can possibly add to a student’s repertoire of experiences. When she interacts with my MBA students, she’s at ease with them, at one moment advising them, then cajoling them to join in the tasks and the next moment, she’s bursting in laughter at her own self. She jots several points on the board, listing out job opportunities in media, sounding extremely mature as she explains each role. Her language is crisp, her vocabulary rich and soon, it’s clear that her training in Corporate Communication has exposed her to speaking to the point using just the right words and phrases.

At some point, one wonders how she could do it all, but then when you enjoy what you’re doing, you never feel tired. Tarika clearly has long innings in the media.

The ‘smoking’ elephant

WCS release video of the smoking wild elephant
A ‘smoking’ wild elephant captured in-camera, is not only puzzling but raised curiosity amongst scientists and experts further to study the unusual behaviour by the pachyderm.

The Wildlife Conservation Society, India Program, has shared what it claimed as the first ever video of ‘smoking’ wild elephant captured in Karnataka forests and its observations, as the elephant supposedly ingests charcoal and blows out ashes. It has baffled experts worldwide.

Smoking wild elephant
The ‘smoking’ Asian wild elephant was captured in camera by WCS Assistant Director Vinay Kumar in Nagarhole National Park in Karnataka.

The WCS shared the unique video-documentation with this author today that although, was captured by one of its official about a year ago, providing new insights into wild elephant behaviour. Vinay Kumar, Assistant Director captured the video of the wild Asian elephant seemingly ‘smoking’, as it appears to ingest charcoal and blows out the ashes. The video was taken in Nagarahole National Park in Karnataka in April last year when its team, comprising of Vinay himself, his colleague Srikanth Rao and three field staff involved in a project undertaking long term monitoring of tiger and prey populations, the WCS said.

WCS India Program, based in Bengaluru, has combined cutting-edge research on tigers and other wildlife, with national capacity building and, effective site-based conservation through constructive collaborations with governmental and non-governmental partners. WCS India Program is committed to saving wildlife and wild lands, nurturing and inspiring positive attitudes towards nature in people through its scientific and conservation endeavors.

WCS claimed that this is the first known video-documentation of a wild elephant exhibiting such behaviour, and thus has scientists and experts puzzled. Dr.Varun R. Goswami, elephant biologist and senior scientist with WCS India Program believes that, most probably, the elephant was trying to ingest wood charcoal, as she appeared to be picking up something from the burnt forest floor, blowing away the ash that came along with it in her trunk, and consuming the rest. Charcoal has well recognised toxin-binding properties, and although it may not have much nutritional content, wild animals may be attracted to it for this medicinal value. Charcoal can also serve as a laxative, thereby doubling its utility for animals that consume it after forest fires, lightning strikes, or controlled burns.

The video has been shared extensively by international agencies/publications like National Geographic, Fox News, Science Magazine, and is making rounds on digital media portals both nationally and internationally, garnering millions of views. It may be viewed on the WCS India

Interested may read Mr Vinay Kumar’s detailed account of the incredible sighting here: http://wcsindia.org/home/2018/03/23/the-smoking-elephant

The landscape of Belagavi is changing or we would rather put it as ‘Developing’ with the opening of UK 27 The Ferns (Star hotel) and Native by Chancery in this little cozy town.

Tourists and others visiting Belagavi in the olden days would recollect that a good lodge was then Saraswati Lodge (Nana Shankar Sheth Marg) where the Who’s who of politics used to come. Then there were other few and then there was the birth of Ramdev, Satkar, Milan, Sanman, Anupam all almost opened in the same time or may be a couple of years in between them.

Then we had the Sankam and the Adarsh Palace making their entry which gave a touch of luxury to the stay here. With changing times, we saw VITS open which then was renamed as Eefa now on Club road.

uk-27-fern
UK 27 Ferns

However in the last one year the total graph of the travel industry has transformed and we saw the first 4 star hotel the Fairfield Marriot open in 2017 and now in 2018 we have the Native by Chancery hotel (Opp Dmart near Third Gate, Tilakwadi) and UK 27 The Ferns (Dr. B R Ambedkar Road near Pantaloons) have made a soft launch and would be officially launched in the next fortnight.

From the common toilet/bathrooms to the luxurious bath tubs(one needs to be however careful using them), the entire landscape of the hospitality industry in Belagavi is seeing a vast change.

native chancery belgaum

Maybe the needs of the tourists or the business travelers have changed, attribute it to anything the new two hotels will add around 130 + rooms to the existing 1700+ rooms capacity including all types – small and big.

Fairfield by Marriott Belagavi

Fairfield by Marriott Belagavi is a 114 keys 4 star hotel, while the UK 27, The Fern, Belagavi is a 90 business room hotel whereas the Native by Chancery has 54 rooms at your service.

The biggest question that arises to many would be where is the scope and what would be rate of occupancy. But with newer hotels coming up the older ones will have to upgrade themselves if not to match but to match the current time and lifestyles. The pie will be shared initially as we have very limited corporate exposure and also in that terms with tourism. The rule of survival of the fittest is here to stay.

Shankam Residency

All the above hotels also have their own restaurants like the Native has a Veg restaurant with bar while the UK 27 Ferns will have a Spices veg restaurant, Melange a multi cuisine restaurant and also lounge. Already the Sanjeev Kapoor’s Suravie (Lounge bar) and Grain of Salt have opened on Dr B R Ambedkar road above Inmark, Copper Chimney or the Irish House are also there and Barbecue nation will open soon.

Many of the new entrants are offering some great discounted packages for birthday parties, engagements, marriages, receptions etc which the local established hotels are not able to match with the prices then what ?

So the choices are many, this little cosy town is now opening up its feathers to fly high. Welcome to the new Belagavi.

What Water do you want?

A city with a water body enjoys several stories to claim its own. Delhi and the Jamuna, Kolkata and the Hoogly, Sangli with it’s Warna and Krishna, Pune with the (now) tiny but very much its own Mula and Mutha. You get the drift. Stories of floods, of its fertile soil, swimming lessons and also of drowning abound.
Belagavi, a sweet little cozy city, does not have a river of its own. The Tamraparni, Malaprabha, Hiranyakeshi are all miles away. But Belagavi has had its share of the water bodies, the jewel in the crown being the Fort Lake. The lake, with an island to boast and stories of sightings of the crocodiles makes for a good recreation place today. It also greets visitors as they enter the city by road. It shines by the day and buzzes by the night. Flanked by the Fort, it is definitely an attraction. Apparently, the island is a result of the de-siltation activity years ago.

The other cousins are perched on the hillock towards Hindalga, now in a set of 5, separated by embankments, popularly known as Argan Lake. Although off reach for common folks, it houses several species of birds, commonly identifiable among them being the cranes, the egrets and the ibis, also several kingfishers lining the banks and atop cattle. Before being taken over by the KHB buildings, the place right below the railway overbridge used to be a lake.

We often gauged the rainfall by the expanse of the lake, many times spreading right upto the Raghavendra Swami matha. I have witnessed the whole of the left hand side of the bridge being submerged during the eighties, for many years before buildings sprung up.

kapileshwartankThe Kapileshwar pond came abuzz mainly during the Ganesh festival but otherwise it used to be tranquil. It will lose its identity once the flyover becomes functional.

Congress Well
Congress Well

Belagavi, however, does have its share of huge open span wells, the Congress well being right at the forefront. It has shrunk in size after the renovation, and appears tamed now with all its enclosures. But it used to ooze enough oomph and mystery in its heyday. The well at Hutatma Chowk (Kaveri Cold drinks) is synonymous with its twelve pulleys or Gadgada. Joshi mala in Khasbag has a huge open well where a large population of Belagavi claims to have learnt to swim.

A superb well lies locked behind Bharatesh High School, finely built and with clean waters. A huge water body has reluctantly sprung up besides Big Bazar, owing to massive digging for foundation work as also near Gomatesh High School, where even buffaloes are found bathing in the evenings. The small lake at Angol barely has any personality of its own, largely due to its wild vegetation. The moat around the Belagavi Fort is filled with water for a major part of the year, especially after some showers.

belgaum-fort
Belagavi fort moat

A water body, however small, brings with it a unique charm. Birds, animals use it as a watering hole, cattle dot the periphery while humans frolic. It also runs the risk of flooding when it’s too close. Whatever Belagavi has in the name of water, is thankfully clean, unlike Bangalore or other places where lakes have turn toxic and frothy. Whatever space a water- body would have occupied, Belagaviites have in their hearts! And their eyes do water with empathy. That’s more than enough

Truck laden with Cookers with Laxmi Hebbalkar photo seized

A truck laden with Cookers which had the photos of Laxmi Hebbalkar of the Indian National Congress on them has been seized in Sadashiv Nagar area of Belagavi.

Anil Benake of the BJP informed the Election commission officials but for over 30 minutes no one arrived at the spot and later two police men arrived. It was after almost 45 mins that the election commission officials came and seized the truck.

cokkers-heblakarcokker-hebbalkar

Just after four days of the model code of conduct coming into force, the seizure of this truck which has photos of Belagavi Rural aspirant Laxmi Hebbalkar on it, is an embarrassment to the Congress.

In February Deccan Chronicle had made a story which said thousands of cookers have been distributed all through the night in many areas of Belagavi Rural allegedly by Ms Laxmi Hebbalkar, president of the State Women’s Congress Cell, who has been unofficially declared the party candidate from the constituency. Packed in attractive gift boxes with a photograph of Ms Hebbalkar on them, the cookers are finding their way to the homes of voters and several women on Belagavi’s outskirts were spotted carrying the boxes. Worse, in an embarrassment for the Congress, a video-clip showing Ms Hebbalkar’s son, Mrinal Hebbalkar supervising the distribution of cookers among a large number of women went viral on social media on Tuesday.  It showed a truckload of cookers being brought to a locality and several leaders headed by Mrinal Hebbalkar appealing with folding hands to each woman receiving the  gift box to vote for Ms Laxmi Hebbalkar.

Baaghi 2 Review: It’s mass time on a Good Friday, a movie for the masses

$

It’s mass time on a Good Friday, a movie for the masses has been released.

What’s Good: Baaghi 2 has everything that a movie for the masses has: Romance, Action, Twists, turns and few patriotic scenes for the audience to whistle for. Coming to the story, it has been adapted (when you copy legally) from a tamil hit. The movie has twists and are rightly placed. The twists actually break the monotony and doubts your predictions. Disha adds glamour and Tiger handles the action thus maintaining the balance. Songs are good, background score does it’s job to thrill you. Appreciable cinematography. You don’t get bored during the 155 minutes and the credit goes to the director.

bagi2

What’s Bad: A same expression on his face throughout the movie, Tiger definitely needs to work on this. You laugh at few serious scenes, when Tiger couldn’t perform it well. The second half is loaded by action, hence it may seem a bit over to non action lovers.

OLA drivers terrified of Local Auto drivers ask commuters to come away from Bus stand

Auto Rikshaws in the city of Belagavi are known for their arrogance and Autocratic behavior and many are used to it, since ages no one has bothered to look into this simple issue of Law and order where the rules have to be asked to followed. Now these Auto drivers also harass and threaten the OLA cab drivers, this is not new and we have already reported such instances earlier as well.

Vinayak Bhosale shared this Tweet which makes us worry where are we living and is there any law and order in this city.

Vinayak’s tweet mentions – OLA cab Driver denied to pick me from CBT bus stand Belagavi by saying Rickshaw drivers ll harass him. Later asked to come some 200 meters away from bus stop. Driver told me even DC ,SP, RTO none are helping OLA.

So to avoid harassment the OLA driver calls the commuters to come 200-300 meters away from the Bus stand. The same thing happens at Ramdev and Railway station.

RC Akshata also shared

Even I faced the same issues.. the driver asked me to come 100mtrs forward from autorickshaw stand. I had to take ola since I was with 2 family members with so many luggages. Can anyone help on this.

Vinayak further tweeted
in the late night Malaysian girls have booked ola cab near yellur and auto drivers canceled their journey even when ola driver asked them to come some meters away. But still then auto drivers not let them to board.(The driver of the OLA said).

One more tweet said,

Sharing the detail of cab driver. Similar harassment is there near ramdev, CBT, bogarves. Ola officials had official meeting with DC as well but there is no out coming. None of the autos ll put meter in Belgaum.

One should see the way of parking near CBT and even City bus stand, none of the police dare (yes we are thoughtfully using this word) to keep them away.

Arpan Satapathy said
Experienced it numerous times, I’ve to catch the Ola from either Fort or I prefer to get alighted at RTO Circle.
It’s not driver’s fault. But the Ola management and City’s management. Once as instant driver was pleading me and crying that he’ll not come to CBT, auto drivers beat him devastatingly. Ola should take action or either tie with Autowalas to start either OLA Autos. Even the Management is sleeping, they simply ignore the malpractices.

Anand Rajput said, I had same experience last time. I came 200 meters away from bus stand but regular auto drivers followed me and told that they will not let that driver pick me up. OLA driver was too scared to come there and I had to cancel my ola booking. Somehow regular autowala agreed to drop me for same charge as OLA. I don’t understand why ola drivers accept bookings if they can’t pickup from bust stand. May be just to make money from cancelled Rides??? Regular autowala told me that they have backing from MLA Firoz Sait and no one can touch them..

Pavan Kulkarni said, I had also experienced same problem in Belgaum. Booked ola from railway station. The ola driver called me and told to come outside station bcoz auto drivers will start fighting.

Akshata Sharma mentioned that Even I experienced the same issue.. the driver asked me to come 100 mtrs forward from autorickshaw stand. I had to take ola since I was with 2 family members with so many luggages. Commissioner of Police, Belgaum City .. can you please help on this.

So the question here, Is there any law prevailing in this city or is it a Lawless city where the Autocratic Auto drivers can behave in any manner they want?

The RTO, Police never want to act and so are the elected representatives. Its all about Vote bank ofcourse, but don’t the citizens have the right to travel as per their choice when the law of the country permits Taxi services such as OLA. When by law they can work then why is that they are been harassed. Infact if the OLA or similar services were given more scope and protection today the Auto Menace could have been curtailed.

RTO does not know the exact number of Autos plying on the road which is a joke on its own. 6500 or 7500 or 10,000 no exact figure.

May be its time to Ask the politicians contesting for the Assembly elections
Will he implement the Auto fare by meter and also give protection to the other sources of Travel such as OLA ?

NCP president Sharad Pawar visited Belagavi after a gap of 32 years and took part in various functions including the MES convention held at CpEd ground on Saturday.

Pawar said that the voters must be united and if there are more MES MLA’s that would strengthen the case of Belagavi’s merger with Maharashtra in the Supreme Court.Earlier at the airport he hinted towards the formation of the Third front which could drive nation to glory.

shard-pawarPawar in his usual style also pinched the MES leaders and the groupism and dissidence is not good for the Marathi voters. If all you stand together then only it can have an impact and more MLAs could get elected, he said. He added every vote of Marathi person in border area should go to MES candidate, which is fighting for the rights of Marathi people
He added he has not hatred for Kannada or Karnataka, infact Karnataka is like my brother. But we expect the same respect from the other side. Kishan Rao Yellurkar, Ram Apte and Krishna Menase were felicitated by Sharad Pawar for their contribution.

These isolated villages get power from Solar

Even today there are many hamlets like Talewadi, Horda, Krishnapur and Mendil in the Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary jungles of Khanapur which have not seen electricity till date. But now there is some glow in their life with the help of the Solar power. The solar power plant was commissioned just before the model code of conduct came into effect and now these 4 hamlets get some kind of power. All the mentioned hamlets come within Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary limits, restriction are more in there for safety of wildlife.

There are no proper roads, schools, hospitals or drinking water, during the rains many of these get isolated as the roads go underwater for as many 3- 5 months.

solar-village

But with the eye on the elections local politicians saw to it that this solar power plant was commissioned before the model code of conduct was in force. Only 4 wheel drive can take you to these hamlets.

The solar system can hardly satisfy the needs of the villages but even with this very little power supply they take it as a blessing. Every house has two bulbs and they glow sufficiently as of now.

Villagers have been demanding proper power supply but the authorities said it is not feasible. Power can be supplied only by underground cables. The forest department also has not allowed use of power cables due to various reasons and safety of wildlife.
