Many of you might have already availed the offer, and many have just done some window shopping and have planned to avail the offer.

Speaking to AAB, a citizen said, the offers are very tempting and due to the rains one can break any body part without any workout, is really fascinating. Our entire family plans to avail the body lotion spa treatment at Goods shed road.

The Cantonment board is also not behind and could float offers soon in Camp and near the Vegetable market.

NWKRTC and Indian Railways have also made offers but the same is very limited.

In the days to come, we could also see stalls put by doctors at the above locations so that post-offer treatment can be given instantly without any delay. According to sources already a few hospitals have approached the PWD and CCB for space allocation.

So what are you waiting for? Have you availed the offer yet?

In a very unfortunate incident, 5 persons died as their Wagon R car they were traveling in fell into a 50-foot-deep gorge near Tillari Ghat near Lashkar point on Sunday. The police suspect all are from Belagavi only names and other details yet to be ascertained.

In the monsoon, many from Belagavi go to Tillari for sightseeing and picnic as the weather there is beautiful, but their trip to Tillari was very unfortunate.

tillari-accidenttillari-accident

There is no information on how exactly the accident occurred but there was dense fog and on the slope, the car might have raced ahead and fallen into the gorge. A couple of years ago on the same spot, an ambulance had slipped killing 4 people.

Two dead bodies are stuck in the car and hence cutters are being used to remove the bodies while the other bodies were found far away from the car.

The 1.5 crore toilet

I am a sign development in many cities, but to the city of Belagavi “Am I a curse”, No one wants to utilize me and even after being made after cutting through hard rocks from mother earth, now I lie utilized as a toilet.

Visitors to the DC compound near the Underpass have to cover their mouth while passing by because of foul smell emanating from the underpass which is now converted into a toilet of sorts.

There were a few people who could be counted on fingers who used the said underpass but now even they have left coming that way due to the stink.

court-underpass

The corporation hasn’t even bothered to clean it, maybe again the question of who will clean or under whose jurisdiction does that underpass come might be the reason.

Over 1.5 crores were spent on the same and all have gone into the stinking toilet as of now.

Bike got punctured near Shri Basveshwar Circle, and then the search for the Puncture shop began and one was visible in the vicinity. When we went there we saw an old man, aged about 75 years, and naturally, we asked, is there anyone who will repair this puncture for us?

The old man collecting a few tools just walked out of the small shop and came near the bike and started on his work without any delay.

old-man-puncrure

While he was busy with his work trying to find the puncture, we just asked, You are old and even then you take up this strenuous work? Are there any financial problems at home?

He was quick to reply that, I am happy at home, my children work and they look after me as well, there is no problem for food or shelter, but if I don’t work, I feel lazy and very weak. If I keep working then only I can stay fit and live this life. I will keep working until my last breath he concluded.

In no time the puncture was patched and then while paying him we paid him some extra money, but he declined the extra and said, for this job this is enough, I don’t expect more and returned the extra money, and said the money I get is enough for me to buy chocolates and toys for my grandchildren, hence I don’t need more.

This old man taught us so many lessons of life in a span of 20 minutes, which no Management college will ever teach. Satisfaction and working to stay fit.

Belagavi needs an exclusive Protest zone

$

No doubt protests, agitations, rallies are rights in a democracy but not at the cost of others. The direct effect is on mobility due to traffic jam.

Many cities have planned for an exclusive Protest Zone in line with Bengaluru’s Freedom Park where a part is earmarked to hold agitations.

Most of the protests in Belagavi are held at Rani Chennamma Circle which blocks the entire traffic at the circle and also causes traffic jams in diverted areas as Rail Nagar, club Road etc.

Belagavi needs an exclusive Protest zone

The Circle, which connects to many roads including the state and national highways must be kept free of protests.

Traffic movement is hampered in Belagavi for a long time due to various forms of protests.

The city corporation and the district administration must think on this and make space for an exclusive protest zone which will protect the rights of the citizens and at the same time will not hamper mobility.

The Monsoon Blues

by Swatee Jog

Have you ever walked barefoot on the sea shore…holding a fistful of sand…unmindful of the happenings around and lost in thoughts…only to find that the sand has dropped?

That’s the way it rains in Belagavi.

The clouds seriously start gathering around May when amazing designs form on the Belagavi skies. The pre-monsoon showers lash the city ferociously, accompanied by the percussions of the thunder and the special effects of the lightening. The trees that looked like kids soaked in mud while at play, suddenly have a shower after months and come out smelling heavenly. The drains get choked and the rooftops cleaned.

Photo by Shivani Khapare: A scene near Belgaum

Then suddenly one June morning, the whole city is engulfed in a canopy of dark grey clouds and the skies begin their yearly chores. The Belagavi monsoon is serious business. There’s no fun and gamely hide-n-seek, at least in the first few days. It’s as if the Rain Gods have assigned serious tasks to the clouds and they must finish the same to avoid being expelled. The team assigned to Belagavi is like Maths students, complete concentration on the task at hand! The rains in Pune are jovial and vibrant, Mumbai and Goa have their own jolly rains that playfully drench the city and then run in merriment. Delhi rains are arrogant and have an air about themselves…they will come and go whenever they feel like. But Belgaum rains…the drops must be equal size, the pace is slow and steady…boring at times and the skies rarely open up to offer a glimpse of the sun.

I managed to see the moon yesterday and felt it looked like a disc of grated Gouda cheese! But it soon disappeared. Back in the eighties, when the Belagavi Over-bridge had no proper drainage system for the rainwater, the first flush filled the low lying area behind today’s Fire Dept. Office and the water gushed across the road towards Mangal Metal Works. It used to be a sight. My dad n me were once trapped in the sudden burst of water and his bike started drifting in the force of water with me clutching the handle and he walking with full strength holding the bike. I cried aloud and he kept reassuring me but when he brought me safely to Goaves, I thought he was a He-Man!

Photo: Manish Khapare

We would check the increasing expanse of the pond below the bridge to gauge the rain; that area is now a huge residential complex built by the KHB. Shastri nagar and Vivekanand colony- Maratha colony would invariably be cut-off from the city due to heavy flooding.

Rains in Belagavi almost always fill the low lying areas, especially in front of Globe cinema, Dharwad Road, Mahatma Phule Road and some parts of the inner by-lanes. The latter two are now a classic example of a slush-pit. Vehicles without proper mud-guards spray the slush on to the other tailing vehicles. The trees that once offered solace for those who’d forget their raincoats are no more around. The narrow lanes in the innards of the city too offer no shelter to the pedestrian caught off guard in the sudden pour. The civic bodies make little or no efforts to make matters easy. The bus stops have no proper shelter and the school kids run helter-skelter.

Some Mrs. Manohar is planning to make a film on Belagavi monsoon! Cool! Maybe because it doesn’t rain here like water out of a shower, rather it drizzles more than it rains, and that makes it all the more attractive.

But the same Belagavi rain brings about a veil of romanticism…the steaming chai, crisp bhajis available at many street corners, corn on the cob at Bogarves, thin streaks of fumes emanating from the roasted groundnuts with a dash of salt on the thela …The city turns green overnight and the cattle merrily graze on the outskirts. The Argan Talav (near Hindalga Ganapati) sports tiny lotuses blooming (now not visible after the wall being built by Army) and wells in Shahapur literally swell up. The first showers drop the mercury to lower levels. The drizzle inspires poets and house-wives gear up to dish out spicy stuff to beat the monsoon-blues.

That’s the fun of Belagavi Monsoon! Love, cringe or get irritated, but you can never hate it!

What happens when it rains

by Dr. Madhav Prabhu
Rain!, It’s not a rhetorical question, maybe it is a romantic one, actually, I was wondering what really does happen when it rains. As a doctor maybe I would be the most unromantic because if you ask me when it rains it brings along a lot of patients, dengue, chikungunya, gastro and so many more. But leave this part alone and I am not very keen on hurting sentiments.

So what does rain really bring, let’s explore Bollywood, rains are supposed to bring romance, getting wet, dancing in the rains, smiling and laughing at someone splashing water at you, holding hands, a really splendid romance that’s what Bollywood produces? This would seem so magical but if I ask my wife (even when she was my girlfriend) to do that with me, she has a different raag malhar altogether, a bucket list of reasons, don’t want to get sick, the rain is too heavy, the mud is difficult to remove off the clothes, it’s not hygienic, it’s crazy, people stare and last but not the least grow up. I sometimes wonder if Bollywood heroines have an extra budget for washing clothes and a super immunity, anyway I miss Shridevi so much.

Rain

The rains actually may be romantic like in movies especially to the middle class, there are so many romantic scenes where our hard-working couples can feel so loved, there is a roof leaking, there are utensils for collecting water so the floor is not wet, it’s like mopping the pitch when the entire stadium is wet, plus there is this additional problem with clothes never drying, hence the scarcity of material to cover yourself and face the next day, rather the next gloomy exhilarating morning. Then there are the much more romantic HESCOM guys, they just take off the lights to make the ambiance more inviting all the time, cold water for bath, crushed clothes without ironing, no mixers to cook food, no water to wash, no work to do, this is the best mix for a romantic day, but somehow I don’t see why we can’t just hold hands and get wet and be happy with all this, I really miss Shridevi.

RainAnd then coming to the splashes, I don’t see anyone finding solace in that splash, I wonder why, there are so many moments where you can get splashed on, actually “moment bana sakte hai “, the rickshaw guys the trucks, the high on adrenaline bikes, the gentlemanly NWKRTC buses all of them make romantic overtures at you by splashing water at you and yet nobody takes them with love, where is the romance gone. Someday I wish I soak somebody with a splash and she would just smile back at me and say love you for that.

Rain

I always believed “daag acche hai “, and rains were the best season to get daag but I don’t know why neither my mom nor my wife shared this enthusiasm, we even had surf excel at our Home. This to me is really annoying, why can’t people just be happy with all the spots, it’s like a offseason holi. I see only the kids enjoy this, adults have somewhere down the lane lost their romance, sad, I really miss that tip tip barsa pani song, where is Ravina.

Rain
There is another set of people who have lost their mojo, our farmers, Bollywood always showed farmers waiting for the rains, the first drop of rain and the farmer and his wife would start traditional dances with the drums playing background music, adorable Radhas, and Bhuvans. But today, the day the rains started farmers are off the field and on the road demanding loan waiver well at least some of them, is it not time to ask for seeds and fertilizers, somehow loans are a priority I suppose. But I don’t blame them as the governing leadership has done nothing to cheer them up for threats together. But that’s not my concern I am missing the dance of the farmers, where have they gone, why is rain not bringing happiness to them, why are they so melancholy, I miss Nargis and Mala Sinha.

Rain

The roads are converted to Olympic size swimming pools, they gutters are overwhelmed and working despite their overinflated tenders and commissions actually the gutters have fallen in love with the road and started flowing on them. The nights are full of bites(from mosquitoes), the days are rocking with potholes, how can people not get the romance, why have we become so. There is so much joy around and we run away to overcrowded Amboli to eat overpriced wada paws, what’s happening to us. I still miss Shridevi.

Actually I believe the life cycle is much like a ride from Jamboti to Peeranwadi, if you want to see beautiful scenes again you need to reverse your gears, isn’t stopping use of plastics, simple households, kitchen gardens or even walking short distances a little what we did previously, something we can do put our lives in reverse gears, isn’t it and yet if I could reverse the clock I would still see Shridevi and not miss her so much.

No more illegal parking on footpaths – CoP

One of the main reasons for casualties is the encroachment of footpaths by motorists and hawkers forcing them to walk on the road and making them susceptible to accidents. Some footpaths like the one near Dr. Rajdenra Prasad circle on College road, one cant even walk as bikes are parked.

Similar scenes are there in many parts of the city. In many places, the footpath is occupied by street vendors blocking the entire pathway.

foothpathfoothpath

Today the Commissioner of Police has issued a press note that, such incidents cause trouble to pedestrians especially the school going children and senior citizens. Hence the citizens are requested not to park or make use of the footpath for any other use under than walking.

Footpaths are meant for pedestrians and anyone who occupies and encroaches them will be severely dealt with. The traffic police have initiated a drive this month to clear the footpath encroachment and slapping fines against motorists using them for parking and as thoroughfares.

What the Law Says:
If your vehicle is found parked on the footpath or anywhere else obstructing traffic, you will be fined Rs 100 and vehicle handed over to the law and order police. As Section 283 is cognizable, it’ll require cops to file an FIR and send you to court.

Section 283 Danger or obstruction in public way or line of navigation — Whoever, by doing any act, or by omitting to take order with any property in his possession or under his charge, causes danger, obstruction or injury to any person in any public way or public line of navigation, shall be punished with fine which may extend to two hundred rupees.

How safely are our children escorted to school?

by Sheetal Sumith
We all have seen auto-rickshaws with overloaded school children hanging many tiffin bags outside. Simply try counting the bags next time when you see you will get the inside picture.

As per government order, only a maximum of six children up to the age of 14 years could be accommodated in an auto rickshaw.

I feel so sad when I think how busy are the parents who are permitting these drivers to just dump the children in that small three tier vehicle. Reminding you of the ones which don’t even have minimum safety features.

auto-school-packed
File photo of an Auto ferrying children to school

An incident in the Shri Basveshwar Circle shook us. The congested auto rickshaw with no safety back door, applied an excess accelerator after crossing the hump. A 7 year old child sitting behind, trusting the safety provided by his parents and his driver uncle, all of a sudden fell out of the auto injuring his knee. Unaware of what just happened behind was driver uncle trying to reach the school on time.

And afraid was the fallen child, after regaining his conscious on what just happened in a fraction of seconds, stood on his legs and was limping behind the auto afraid of not reaching the destination.

Furious, seeing this tragic scene, we just seeded up and blocked the auto and blasted him.

Am sure the parent of the child must be unaware of this incident, because I still see many overcrowded autos. Whom to blame? The busy parents, the safest auto driver uncle or the responsible RTO officials who permit all these and are waiting for an irreversible tragic incident to happen so as to implement the existing rules.

Liquor shops to be shut in Surla

Surla offers a picturesque view of the falls from a plateau and is a loved destination of nature lovers, who wish to enjoy natural beauty. Just being 47 kms from Belagavi it is the best place to also get liquor cheaper as it is in Goa state.

At first, all the villagers found this to be a great option to make it commercial and earn more but now the same has become a suffering for the villagers.

There are 13 liquor bar operating in and around Surla village owing to the nuisance caused by the clients of the bars, mostly tourists, the Village panchayat has passed a resolution seeking closing down of bars. They have also requested the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to intervene in this matter.

sural-falls belgaum
The Sural Water Falls Photo: Sabir Jamadar

According to the Navhindtimes, People of Surla have seen drunk tourists resorting to obscenity by dancing in semi-nude condition, passing lewd comments on local women out on daily chores, like bathing and washing in ponds. Tourists block roads. Failure to deal with such elements would lead to bigger numbers coming to the village and creating a law and order problem. Safety of local population should be high on the agenda of the state authorities. With the villagers alleging illegalities in liquor sales, there is also need to keep a tab on the liquor vendors and liquor being sold in the area. The villagers have alleged that some of the deaths that have occurred in the area could be murders arising out of fights after drinks, so it would be in the interest of people that such situation are avoided in future by taking preventive steps, including controlling the sale of liquor. It remains to be seen whether the state authorities would order a probe into the deaths that have taken place in the area and take the cases to logical conclusions. Such steps would serve as a deterrent and could prevent such incidents in future.

Once Upon a Monsoon

by Sameer Majli

Memories often form the brightest part of our thoughts. There always is the temptation to commence a conversation with “Good old days”. While change is a more permanent feature than status quo on the face of the planet, the mind always wanders and hovers around what things used to be ‘Once Upon a Time’.

belgaum-rain
File photo – Arun

I am your own Belagavi aka Belgaum, erstwhile Venugram and just like my inhabitants, I am gladdened by the arrival of the much awaited monsoon. Its always a wonderful feeling when the elements of nature emerge in a whole new bathed glory. The withered grass awakens to a whole new lease of life, the trees unleash their enchanting green and everything assumes the beauty of the excitement of a new born. Life seems more alive and the freshness of the air is almost intoxicating. The dark shroud of the cloud is ominous no more since it brings wet promises of times that are important for sustenance and subsistence for the year to follow. The sun has its share of the hide and seek. Each downpour brings in waters accumulated from far off lands. I sometimes wonder where and from which distant lands, the clouds gather their booty.  The parched mother earth eagerly gulps its fill as the accumulating waters trickle down to the depths to create a store which is tapped by all forms of life.rain

While each monsoon may seem the same yearly spectacle, there is always the memory reminiscent of good old days when, maybe, the spectacle was even more spectacular. In good old times, the behaviour of the clouds was different and more predictable. The punctuality of the monsoons functioned like clockwork. Come the first week of June and a resolute blanket of the dark clouds would set in, refusing to budge for over two months. The local folk would largely crave to remain indoors. The wet soil would accumulate a characteristic chill which would soon transcend to take the form of a biting wet cold and the residents would draw on their warmest clothes and even snuggle cosily in the depth of warm blankets. The ice cream shops would be shut for the term and the atmosphere would be thick with the aroma of hot tea and fried food.

The green Fields
The green Fields

Puddles in the streets with water assuming the red shades of the soil and threatening to leave stubborn patches on clothes would signal the arrival of wet prosperity. The expanses of the paddy fields would be overflowing with water with tender sprouts struggling to hold on to the soil for dear life with an ambition to feed the human kind. The farmers bearing the gusty wind would be toiling heedless of the cold and the breeze to ensure that the little sprouts would get due justice for their efforts.

Small lakes at the outskirts would overflow and make their way to the scant human habitation of the extension areas and little kids and not so little kids would get a chance to try their hands at fishing in a town devoid of any major water resource. The catch of the day would be displayed proudly to parents and the little fish would be deposited in neighbourhood wells to extend the delight for another day.

The whole canvas a sheer delight to the senses. Good old yester years…..Will it be the same again of will it just be a tale that starts with “Once Upon a Monsoon?”
