Everybody needs a doctor

by Dr. Madhav Prabhu

Doctors are nearly the best friend you have if you see it without a prism of SATYAMEVA JAYATE, the relation between a doctor and a patient is something which no other professional can develop. You can discuss the deepest darkest secrets and you can be sure there will be no gossip. The medical profession has taken me close to many a hearts and taught me so many things which otherwise life would never have taught me. But all of it is not serious and we do have our moments in practice.

Practicing in Belagavi though is a real challenge, not because the patients are different but because we need to deal with patients who speak five different languages with multiple different slangs and tones and add to this the mixture of words from each language and then you get the perfect Belagavi Bhasha.

Let me give you an example there are words like ‘kalmadi and bailkade’ in Kannada (Belagavi dialect) which a doctor from south Karnataka would never understand (its related to emptying your wastes for your info), but our patients use it every day. Such easy words would definitely be easier to say rather than ‘mala and mutra’.

doc1

If you think the movie Piku and the role played by Amitabh was imaginary well think again it actually does happen and we bear the brunt of it, the patient expects us to listen to the entire description of the process of passing stools, the prelude the color, the fragrance, the consistency, the shape, the size and the sound effects which accompany, every detail is discussed some of which is medically relevant I agree but don’t you see who else will the poor person discuss all this with if not for the doctor. I don’t know of any relative who would listen to all these details.

This is especially true with our senior citizens, even a heart attack does not bother them, then we worried about two things and that is a good appetite and a good force to empty the stomach, you restore that and you are a good doctor.

Another word that doctors only in this side of the state learn about is ‘Hasagi Pathya’, ever heard of it?. Pathya to everyone means diet right. No sorry, don’t be confused its not the diet to be eaten in bed but it concerns something about which every man is bothered, his sex life. At first, this was a shocker to me too, when patients used these words, but over time I knew that a patient of heart attack or stroke is usually more bothered by this question than what diet he had to eat.

Then again, can you discuss this with any other friend but a doctor? Doctors have to decide if you can indulge, can you imagine someone else doing it. My patients never complained so hopefully my advice was bang on. Although it sounds funny we doctors take this as a responsibility.

doc1

The best patients, however, are the grandmoms, they think every doctor is their grandson, one who knows everything in the world. I once had a patient, a grandmom whom I had to examine, I asked her how many times she passes urine and whether the quantity was fair enough, and alas she retorted immediately, how am I supposed to know, I am not the doctor, you are.

How am I as a doctor supposed to know this, well I am next to God, so I guess she is fair in her demand. But we doctors love the grandmoms, I do, I can assure you that.

doc1

The sad part though is that not all the elderly come to us with happiness, there are those abandoned by their kids, neglected by the society and who visit doctors, not for the treatment, but because the clinic is the only place they can visit and the doctor is the only person who listens to them. Who else would have the time to listen to their experience and every small problem that they face.

We also have the incredible weight conscious people who come to us with so much dedication to weight loss. They always want to lose weight, and we always have diet and exercise advice ready for them. But then they have their worst enemies in the forms of marriage, jatra, festivals, mango season and so on and so forth, how can they not succumb to such worldly desires.

Doctor I haven’t lost a single gram of weight is what we are used to hearing. Actually, the gyms around us should pay us for herding so many people to them, people who pay but never turn up. I am trying doctor please help me, can you give me a tablet to lose weight? I can’t stop eating and I can’t exercise, well we are still in process of searching those pills I must confess.

doc1

We also have the Internet users, who study everything about the medicines but not the diseases, doctor I read Wikipedia yesterday and it says that the medicine you gave me causes gastritis, in one in every thousand patient, should I take it?, it takes some time to convince them that they are one in a million and not one in a thousand. There are some though who really give you good feedback and we do except a change.

And then we have the caring patients, they care for the doctor too, doctor did you have lunch? Did you lose weight? are you tied? , there are patients who do all this I swear, it does feel good. We also get the sweets, the fruits, the biryani and lots of smiles and this makes the profession worth giving time to.

There are many such bonds that only a doctor and patient can share. In a city like Belagavi life is still cozy for a doctor as long as he enjoys the company of patients or can we say best friends.

The Students have developed a prototype where the household kitchen waste is used to generate the Biogas as a replacement for regular LPG. The system has chopper unit and biodigester which are powered by solar energy. This system approximately generates sufficient amount of biogas which can be used to lit up a stove continuously for around 30-40 minutes with every 3kg waste. The system also includes single-axis solar tracking unit, to capture the maximum amount of solar energy by tracking the movement of the sun. Upon mass production, the system may cost about 20 thousand rupees and the payback period is estimated to be around 3 years.

Chikhale Falls near Chikale village which is about 40 kms from Belagavi.
The way upto the Chikhale Falls

How to Reach:
Peeranwadi – Jamboti – Take left to Chikhale Village (Sign board)
From there another 3 kms is Chikhale village.
After about 500 mtrs park your vehicle and then trek for about 2.5 kms to reach the spot from where the Chikale falls is visible.

There also another route which requires great amount of trekking i.e. from Parwad.

The trek which is fairly easy is stunning along with the fog and beautiful landscape. After the trek the roaring sound of the falling water and the sight there after will make you forget all the hardships you faced to reach up there.

Advice: Reach early and leave early by 4 pm

Thanks Deepak Dhanpal

The Special Ones’, is the short documentary which was showcased at International Short Film and Arts Festival (FISFA), held in association with the 15th World Rural Health Conference 2018 in New Delhi, recently.

New Strait Times, reports, the team of Nur Alya Atiqah Mazlan, Mohammad Afiq Mohd Puzi, Muhammad Faaiz Mat Yusoff, Muhamad Noor Zuhairi Noor Hasani, Nur Diyana Mohd Roznan, Mohamad Muhyiddin Jelani, Hafiz Mohd Razak and Suraya Mohd Zairi fourth-year Malaysian medical students of USM-KLE IMP spent six days filming and editing a short documentary, who are members of a newly-formed non-governmental organisation Medical Awareness Project.

It was challenging because they had to squeeze in filming the documentary between classes in their schedules, not to mention the screening and editing processes during the night. But, it was all worth it as their documentary won the Best Student Film award.

Nur Alya said it was quite a journey and an exceptional experience as this was the first time they submitted a short documentary for a competition.

We had to reproduce the video as the initial video wasn’t fit in terms of quality and context for the competition. The initial video, featuring Nadine (from India) and Afiatul (from Malaysia), was produced for World Down Syndrome Day while The Special Ones was made especially for FISFA.

There were 76 submissions at the festival. And, out of that, 41 were selected for screening, and only 10 were shortlisted for the awards. The team was the only Malaysian team competing against others from countries such as India, Brazil, Japan and Australia.

A premiere of The Special Ones, was arranged as a token of appreciation to the families for agreeing to be a part of their documentary, the team invited Nadine and Prasanna to come forward and say a few words.

Let’s fight the dengue menace – Dr. Madhav Prabhu

$

by Dr. Madhav Prabhu

Dengue is back in Belagavi again and with that is the claims of miracle cures and prevention strategies. Well most of it is fake. Let’s first understand what dengue is.

Dengue is a viral infection caused by a virus belonging to flavivirus family, it is spread by the mosquito called Aedes Aegypti also called tiger mosquito because of the characteristic black and white stripes it bears.

The mosquito is unique add it can bite even in the morning hours. The breeding site for this mosquito is dirty and accumulated water in bins and waste. The mosquito is much smaller in size than other mosquitoes. So we need to understand that it is not merely the bite of the mosquito but the bite of the mosquito carrying the virus that spreads the disease.

dengue

Dengue is because of an increased response of the human body to the virus and it is because of a good immunity, so if anyone claims to boost your immunity to treat dengue they are doing exactly the opposite.

Dengue has three prominent manifestations,

  • One is dengue fever which is like any other viral infection and self terminates on its own without any severe manifestations within few days.
  • Second manifestation is dengue hemorrhagic fever which is what most people know about, it is diagnosed when in the background of dengue infection the patient develops a drop in the platelets . Platelets are the cells which prevent bleeding and hence the patient who has low platelets will most likely bleed. Here we have to understand that platelet transfusion is required only when the platelet drops below twenty thousand according to WHO recommendation or in those patient who have bleeding manifestation like black stools or reddish spots on the skin. The doctor may advice transfusion if the rate of fall is very rapid.
Now let us understand that human body is so beautifully adopted that sometimes even with a platelet count of five thousand patients do not bleed if there is no injuries. So it is necessary to understand that mere low value of platelet should not scare a patient, avoid transfusion at the whims and fancies of doctors.
  • Third and most serious manifestation is dengue shock syndrome where there is tissue damage and leakage of plasma in the body which is very serious and can cause death, this is however very rare and I’d likely if the patient gets dengue for second time.

There is no cure for dengue

The marketed pill Caripill or similar pills of Carica Papaya are manufactured by Pharma companies and are readily available in almost every medical shop in every city, so it’s not a big secret or rare commodity.

This pill or papaya juice may help increase platelets, but not cure disease in forty eight hours as some social media posts claim. You have to understand that every viral disease has a definite course and the disease by itself gets cured without medicine in few days except for few viral diseases like HIV.

Remember common cold , flu, sometimes gastro in children, well most of them are viral and require only symptomatic treatment as there is no medicine, so also with dengue.

Many alternative systems claim cures but most of them have no recorded proof and are almost never effective. Remember last year the health authorities caught people giving water as dengue drops.

We need to understand that in 90% of the cases dengue is beginning stage and will not harm you provided you maintain proper hydration.

The part that the best treatment is prevention has some how been lost in the chorus of fake remedies and the real prevention lies in the cleanliness of out surroundings, the mosquito does not breed, the disease does not spread.

When it comes to vaccination, there are several trials on vaccines being done by WHO in collaboration with other agencies in India and South East Asia, a few of them have been promising and will soon be available in the market, till then there is no effective vaccine, well at least there is no proof documented.

You have to understand that medicines are approved by food and drug authority after medicines and vaccines undergo testing under government supervision and only then after requisite trails the drug is marketed in the country once the safety is established.

Now there are also other diseases which may present just like dengue with a fall in platelets, like the new zika virus cases in Bengaluru. So every time platelet drop it need not be dengue.

The best way to prevent dengue is to keep your surroundings clean, don’t be scared of dengue, it dies not harm most. Treatment is only supportive and there is no cure.

Don’t fall to false rumors of miracle cute tablets and use mosquito repellents even in the mornings. The responsibly of the health authorities also need focus and the real prevention lies there, because if the municipal authorities can keep the city clean, dengue can be eradicated.

Understand dengue, don’t panic and don’t believe our spread rumors.

About the Author: Dr. Madhav Prabhu M.B.B.S, M.D (General Medicine) is Consultant in KLE’s Dr Prabhakar Kore Hospital, Teaches in JNMC and has experience with treating dengue. He is also part of the Dengue vaccine initiative supported by WHO.

For over 18 months the roads were blocked due to the work of the Railway over bridge at Old PB road, now that the bridge has been commissioned people are using it, but the citizens who have shops on Old PB road have a very tough time.

After some strong protests and intervention, one side of the Old PB road has now got a new concrete road, which is yet to be opened, but the road is ready.

But, not a stone has been moved to the other side of the road for the service road. With no Drains, no road and only mud and ditch like condition the businessmen have been crying over this apathy of the administration.

Citizens are asking what is their fault for this step-motherly treatment? If service road has been built on one side why not the other side as well?

Halga Macche bypass compensation hiked

$
0
0

The 9 km Halga Macche bypass planned has not materialized as the farmers have protested against the same almost all of the land is fertile and multiple crops are been taken.

About 130 acres of land will have to be acquired for the 9 ms stretch which will pass through Halga, Zadshahpur, Madhavpaur, Old Belagavi, Vadgaon, Shahpur, Mache.

Each time some kind of survey is undertaken for the same the farmers have agitated strongly as they say taking fertile land for such projects are not feasible, as they rely upon farming only.

The total compensation planned earlier was 9 crores and now the same has been hiked to 13 crores. The process of land acquisition was first started in 2008.

The farmers had even suggested an alternate route which would be longer but would have the least impact on farm land.

First published April 2, 2017; Updated April 11,2017

BELAGAVI, Apr.2: Just like spectacular colours on his canvas Somanand Maruti Gadakari’s emotions blossomed into celebrations when he found his name among the winners of the prestigious Karnataka Lalithakala Academy award-2016.

With the award, which undoubtedly made him and his family happy, came the recognition for his years of dedication and passion for paintings. The award, which carries a cash prize of Rs.25,000, a certificate and a memento, was presented to him and nine other winners of the KLA awards for the year 2016 by chief minister Siddaramaiah at a function held at Mandya on Jan.23, 2017. Kannada and Culture Minister Umashree was also present.

Somanand Maruti Gadakari
Fine art, even as a hobby was never heard in the family the Gadakaris, which was traditionally associated with agriculture in their native Hunnur of Hukkeri taluk. But, Somanand developed a liking for drawing and painting after being inspired and motivated by his teacher, Mr.Badiger while he was studying at the Kannada medium high school in Hire Bagewadi. He picked up pencils and sketch pens, and started trying his hands with brushes and colours, capturing small frames from the beautiful and wonderful natural landscapes and scenic beauties on drawing sheets.

His urge to explore more and learn the finesse of the art of painting, colour balancing techniques, besides techniques of brush-strokes and use of other conventional and un-conventional tools motivated him to take up a diploma course at the Beynon Smith College of Fine Arts in Belagavi city. It was at this college where his creative instincts started taking proper shape with his brushes starting listening to his imaginations.

However, the circumstances in the family compelled him to find a job first for survival. Accordingly, he joined the Karnataka police department as constable in 1999. Presently, he is serving as a head constable with the City Reserve Police in Belagavi city.

No, not for money, as I have conducted exhibitions from my own savings from the salary, even when it started with just Rs.3000 per month; recently, my salary has gone up to Rs.25,000 and managing both family and paintings. However, I have sold few pieces when some of the individuals were too keen to have them,” Mr.Gadkari said adding that senior officials in the department always supported his endeavours.

And, like a contrasting combination of policing and engaging himself in tough jobs at times on one side and taking out time for his passion on the other side, he uses the contrasting tools – brushes and knife to reproduce his imaginations and plots from the nature on a canvas. Of late, he is specialising in abstract paintings using both brush and knife.

I will keep creating new paintings, which is more of an obsession than passion,” Mr.Gadkari says. Eom.

The Argan Talav or Argan Ponds near the Military Hindlaga Temple are set of 5 ponds nestled in nature and also is nestled into it a small bird sanctuary where a few species of birds breed. These water bodies are home to many birds and recently the MLIRC took up the rejuvenation of these ponds and now after the first good spell of rain

For over 8 months the army personnel were working on the same in a scientific manner so that more and more water could be stored. As soon as one lake is filled up, the water is let out in the next one.

Argan Talav was earlier known as Airgun Talav as British officers used to go there on weekdays for hunting birds and rabbits with their Airguns. Later on, people started calling it Argan Talav.
Walking paths have also been made for nature lovers to have a stroll.

Earlier many would recall that the same ponds were used milkmen to bathe their buffaloes, but that was stopped somewhere in 2011 when an 8 feet wall was constructed. Devotes coming to the temple have been attracted towards the beauty of the lakes.

A request to the people going there: don’t take any kind of plastic with you, come, see enjoy the beauty and preserve it for the upcoming generations.

PULP is an Online Magazine started by six Architects – Shantesh Kelvekar, Preetanshi Singh, Maithily Velangi, Rajeev Malagi, Smruti Balvalli and Rahul Paul. While Shantesh and Maithily are native to Belagavi; they along with Rahul are alumni of Gogte Institute of Technology, Belagavi.

The creators of the magazine say that they want to build a platform whereby they could sensitise public about the need to understand and appreciate the existing spaces, situations, and lifestyle around without being judgemental about the condition. They believe once the public is sensitised, their overall outlook on the otherwise ignored condition will alter drastically in the eyes of the public. The group wants to bring a change by embracing the existing conditions rather than opposing.

pulp magazine

PULP which means flesh as well as fiction – looks at the dichotic conditions of every day, everywhere and everyone. Written in form of short stories, narratives, poems, videos, and graphics – the platform to express these stories is versatile.

Recently PULP wrote a story on our very own town – Belagavi. Titled ‘Akbar Amar Anthony’, it is a titillating story of the three railway gates of Belagavi, and how they bring the entire city together. Waiting at the railway we usually get frustrated, irritated and agitated – with the railway overbridge under construction, more than ever before. This story will bring a dimensional shift in you, it will leave you altered with your views. They bet that next time one is stuck at any of these railway gates, they’ll be far more relaxed and embracing!

Three brothers, separated at birth, raised in different localities are connected only by a single thread – the railway track. Each have grown up leading different lives; developing their own unique personality. However, every day, at specific intervals, for few minutes, they synchronize for a musical. A musical, so engaging, that no resident can ignore, but is drawn to follow suit.

Around 150-200 crows gather and sit on wires, nearby small trees early morning near Sadashiv Nagar and their caw-caw can be heard in the entire vicinity. At around 7.30 AM a sweet smart opens its shutters and the volume increases and then all of a sudden about 20 crows gracefully come down near the sweet shop and eat Shev, Kharebundi, Papdi offered by Shantaram Gaonkar who runs the sweet mart on Sadashiv Nagar Main road.

Within just 15-20 mins the feast is over and all the crows wait on the wires and small trees for their turn. They come in groups of 20-25 and feast on the Savouries.

Shantaram has been offering the crows food for the past 6 years and according to him, his business has grown after he commenced this crow feeding. It is very routine that a shop owner first performs puja and then they begin with the daily routine, but here it is the crows first who are fed then the God.
