‘Science & Fun’ is an initiative to gain a balance in the world of science for the children of age 6-15. The syllabus for students these days is pretty huge so the time that is spent in learning theory is far more than the time spent to do things practically.

So ‘Science & Fun’ are providing a solution to all the children who want to balance their knowledge on science and not just mugup the theory. They preach and practice science in a way easily understandable to the children.

The classes are conducted twice a week with a batch of 10-12 students. The students have fun with science n smile with the discoveries they make and so the name ‘Science & Fun’.

They conduct around 3 experiments per class so around 24 experiments in a month. So the child learns a lot of useful concepts which are as per his syallabus also the concepts which are useful in everyday life. They cover the topics from all streams of science Physics, Chemistry, Biology.

Manali Godbole, a Electronics Engineer by profession and a qualified Teacher with from AIECCE(All India Early Childhood Care) has started this novel concept.

Speaking to AAB, Manali said, With a good study of child psychology and a blend of Science we surely know what is the best way to mold a scientist in a child. It is not necessary that the child has to choose a stream of science in later stages of life to attend this class. We want the child to understand the practical application of what he is studying whichever stream he/she decides to choose in the later part of life. ‘Science & Fun’ will develop the attitude required to learn.

The first class as demo class where the parents can join the child and experience the world of science.

The watchman at the Shahpur crematorium was asked by two youths to dig a pit for the burial of a two-month-old and so Rajesh Banch dug up the pit and when he was placing the infant in the pit he felt it was alive.

At around 1 PM, six women and about 10 men reached the graveyard along with the child. He saw that the infant was packed tightly in a cloth and when he tried to loosen it, he found that baby was alive and was moving her hand. He was shocked and told the family members that the baby was alive.

Then one of the members of the family said that the doctors said the baby had a brain hemorrhage and was good as dead. But the watchman denied burring the alive child and informed the authorities.

The baby was asked to be fed and it opened its eyes and then was taken to a doctor and doctors confirmed that baby was suffering from a deadly disease. Even then the watchman denied burring the infant and after some wait, the family went away.

Belagavi is surrounded by nature’s beauty and one can find beautiful places to relax and one such place is Tillari.

swapnavel-falls-tillari
Photo Bahubali Upadhye

It’s a paradise; spot the beauty in the ghats and the water falls at Swapnavel point. There 3 waterfalls which will dampen your eyes with the beauty of heaven. Fog, the lush green trees and in this season the fresh scent of green grass is worth it. But as this area is not developed as a tourist destination be prepared for hardships. No sign boards or milestones, no food and even for that matter petrol pumps so be prepared for all this before you leave. It is advisable to take food & water along.

Tillari is about 65 kms from Belagavi.

tillari

How to go there and what to see:

To see Tilari dam and waterfalls one has to take Belagavi-Ganeshpur-Belgaundi-Tilari Road. It is very hard to tell exactly locations of waterfalls as there are no information boards or milestones. The sound of waterfall #1 can be heard from the road itself as it is very near. A small pass takes you there. From there, waterfall #2 and 3 and Swapnavel point can be reached. [Points marked on images]tillarimap1

Entrance to Tilari dam without permission is prohibited, so one has to take permission from official personnel.

Entire red circled area is so picturesque that it looks extremely beautiful. If the view is covered with dense misty fog one can wait till it disperses.tillarimap2

Ghat section after Kadoli is awesome, but extremely dangerous because of deadly serpentine curves.

Tillari

If you are planning to go there on bikes you must keep waterproof rain wears ready. As it can rain anytime even before you realize it’s raining you will be drenched.

Do not expect any shops, restaurants, petrol pumps. You may not find a single person throughout the route till you reach Tilari nagar.

To return to Belagavi it is advisable to take Tilari Nagar-Patane Phata road which connects to Amboli-Belagavi road.

So go and enjoy the heavenly paradise, many holidays ahead; Stay Safe.

Balaji Chikale the male Lavni Dancer

Nauvari sari (9 yard sari), kamarpatta, and embellished jewelry; a necklace, hanging earrings, bangles, and ghungroos tied around slender feet.  The movements of the dancing diva on stage create a perfect blend of the steps and the dholak, and the crowd gives a thunderous applause with whistles in the background.

The Lavni performance was astounding but not many knew the dancer was Balaji Chikale from a small village of Atiwad near Belagavi. Balaji has been giving solo performances for over a decade now.

An ITI educated Balaji went to Mumbai in search of a job and while trying to sustain himself in the city of dreams he also lived his passion of dance and especially as a Lavni dancer. His performance at the Marathi Natya Sammelana recently received zealous acclaim.

Balaji Chikale

Lavani is a folk dance, traditionally performed by women for men. The popularity of Bin Baykancha Tamasha (or Performance Without Women) is very popular.

Lavani as a dance form dates back to the seventeenth century, but came to prominence only during the Peshwa rule. A genre of folk dance, it deals with subjects like society, religion, and politics.

Happily married Balaji has children and is an entrepreneur who deals with medical equipment.

Balaji ventured into this field on impersonation as a woman for the love of the art form and passion for dance.

So the next time you are watching a lavni performance, it could be our very own Balaji Chikale performing on stage.

Ola, Uber or Meru Cabs we need more in Belagavi

Traveling in an Auto in Belagavi is nothing more than an adventure ride, which starts from the first instance of stopping the auto, as the driver who is the God of some sorts would say some magical figure which the commuter will have to adhere as he has no other option.

Yes, there is Ola Cabs operating in Belagavi but it has not been able to make an impact with its Ola auto nor the Ola Cabs.

Only App based booking, more concentration in North Belagavi, and very few cabs have hampered the growth of Ola in Belagavi.

olacabs-belagavi

None of the citizens want to argue with the auto driver over the fare been charged, nowadays one commuter said they charge a minimum of 40 for a distance of less than a km. For 2.3 km an Auto driver asked Rs.90 and if you are one of those early comers from the Bus then 100 is the minimum fare.

The police have never ever tried their best to implement the Auto fares, even after giving them a fare hike last year which is the highest (may be in the country).

There have been numerous incidents of Ola cab drivers been harassed by the auto drivers at CBT and railway station. Even after this, the police have not acted raspingly and the issue still flares up each other day.

meru belagavi

Other Cab aggregators like Uber or MERU must start services here so that the AutoCracy can be crushed and with it, the drivers will stand to gain as they can shift to operators who pay them more.

We also hope the Police also assists such new avenues where under police protection more cab operators will help the citizens commute smoothly, safely and at fixed transparent fares. It is the duty of the Police and the RTO to implement the Auto fares by meters, they have miserably failed due to various reasons, and hence when there are new avenues opening the authorities must support them, assist them in all the legal way possible.

Visvesvaraya Technological University to spend lakhs on foundation day celebrations

The Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) will celebrate its 20th foundation day on June 29 and an extravagant program has been arranged where Governor Vajubhai R. Vala, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Higher Education Minister G.T. Deve Gowda. Padma Vibhushan awardee and scientist V.K. Aatre will deliver the foundation day lecture.

The New Indian Express reports that About Rs 1 crore has been approved by the Finance Committee for the Foundation Day celebrations, which according to a section of varsity authorities is a sheer waste of students’ money. The varsity did not even receive approval for the event from its Executive Council.

While the Hindu, reports, the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) authorities found themselves in a controversy after several varsity members criticised it for spending an “extravagant” amount of around ₹50 lakh for the 20th Foundation Day to be held on Friday at Belagavi.

VTU which faces severe financial crunch has often been accused of spending money unwisely. Recently, the varsity had paid around Rs 11 crore just for the foundation stone laying ceremony of the skill center at Talkal village in Yelburga.

Visvesvaraya Technological University has accounts in every Belagavi bank

A state university can have a maximum of three bank accounts. However, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) has accounts in almost all the bank branches in Belagavi. This came to light after an internal audit was conducted by the university authorities for the last eight years. According to official sources, the audit is still ongoing.

What Water do you want?

A city with a water body enjoys several stories to claim its own. Delhi and the Jamuna, Kolkata and the Hoogly, Sangli with it’s Warna and Krishna, Pune with the (now) tiny but very much its own Mula and Mutha. You get the drift. Stories of floods, of its fertile soil, swimming lessons and also of drowning abound.
Belagavi, a sweet little cozy city, does not have a river of its own. The Tamraparni, Malaprabha, Hiranyakeshi are all miles away. But Belagavi has had its share of the water bodies, the jewel in the crown being the Fort Lake. The lake, with an island to boast and stories of sightings of the crocodiles makes for a good recreation place today. It also greets visitors as they enter the city by road. It shines by the day and buzzes by the night. Flanked by the Fort, it is definitely an attraction. Apparently, the island is a result of the de-siltation activity years ago.

Chai Siew Yap a student studying in JNMC who hails from Malaysia Shared this wonderful photo of Fort lake.

The other cousins are perched on the hillock towards Hindalga, now in a set of 5, separated by embankments, popularly known as Argan Lake. Although off reach for common folks, it houses several species of birds, commonly identifiable among them being the cranes, the egrets and the ibis, also several kingfishers lining the banks and atop cattle. Before being taken over by the KHB buildings, the place right below the railway overbridge used to be a lake.

We often gauged the rainfall by the expanse of the lake, many times spreading right upto the Raghavendra Swami matha. I have witnessed the whole of the left hand side of the bridge being submerged during the eighties, for many years before buildings sprung up.

kapileshwartankThe Kapileshwar pond came abuzz mainly during the Ganesh festival but otherwise it used to be tranquil. It will lose its identity once the flyover becomes functional.

Congress Well
Congress Well

Belagavi, however, does have its share of huge open span wells, the Congress well being right at the forefront. It has shrunk in size after the renovation, and appears tamed now with all its enclosures. But it used to ooze enough oomph and mystery in its heyday. The well at Hutatma Chowk (Kaveri Cold drinks) is synonymous with its twelve pulleys or Gadgada. Joshi mala in Khasbag has a huge open well where a large population of Belagavi claims to have learnt to swim.

A superb well lies locked behind Bharatesh High School, finely built and with clean waters. A huge water body has reluctantly sprung up besides Big Bazar, owing to massive digging for foundation work as also near Gomatesh High School, where even buffaloes are found bathing in the evenings. The small lake at Angol barely has any personality of its own, largely due to its wild vegetation. The moat around the Belagavi Fort is filled with water for a major part of the year, especially after some showers.

belgaum-fort
Belagavi fort moat

A water body, however small, brings with it a unique charm. Birds, animals use it as a watering hole, cattle dot the periphery while humans frolic. It also runs the risk of flooding when it’s too close. Whatever Belagavi has in the name of water, is thankfully clean, unlike Bangalore or other places where lakes have turn toxic and frothy. Whatever space a water- body would have occupied, Belagaviites have in their hearts! And their eyes do water with empathy. That’s more than enough

Sanju Movie Review

Every Saint had a past and every Sinner has a future !! Watch Sanju and decide it yourself whether he was a Saint or a Sinner.

Script: You have seen one side of the coin shown by the media. Now it’s time to see the unheard version of Sanju told by himself. Call it an autobiography or an image makeover attempt, Sanju is a well-written script. The story boasts to be true, however, the deep underworld links of Sanju was not shown, which gives a pinch of being biased.

Sanju Movie Review

Screenplay: takes it’s own time to settle, precisely the first 50 minutes. But once it does, it gives you all the entertainment you need.

Performance: ohh there was Ranbir in the movie? Never observed him. Ranbir has played the role so perfectly that you think it’s actual Sanjay Dutt in the movie. The performance will stay in your mind for days. Delivering a spectacular performance, Ranbir certainly deserves an award.
Vicky Kaushal as a friend and Paresh Rawal as father equally give an outstanding performance.

Direction: Raju Hirani is all set for his 6th hit in a row. Make sure you carry your handkerchief along coz he is gonna make you cry. Don’t worry he has a few comic scenes too to balance the emotions. The father-son chemistry is the USP of the movie and is wonderfully directed.

Music: Fateh, Ruby and Badhiya. Thankfully only 3 songs in the movie and all are good and properly placed. Fateh gives you a motivational punch.

Verdict: Hit with 3.5 stars, certainly a must watch.

by Dr. Mallikarjun V Jali

On the eve of Doctor’s Day in India, celebrated on July 1 of every year meant to recall our dedication in our services to the society. The legendary leader Late Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy who lived to the principles of ethical practice of medicine and served the needy people of the community amidst his duties as a chief minister of West Bengal is to be taken as a guiding light in our day to day professional commitment.

An emerging approach for disease prevention and treatment that takes into account people’s variations in genes, environment, and lifestyle

doctor-day
Precision medicine is an emerging approach for disease treatment and prevention that takes into account individual variability in genes, environment, and lifestyle for each person.” State of the Union, January 20, 2015, quote: “Tonight, I’m launching a new Precision Medicine Initiative to bring us closer to curing diseases like cancer and diabetes, and all of us access to the personalised information we need to keep ourselves and our families healthier” unquote, Former President of the USA, Mr. Barak Obama said. It was, of course, the US Presidents’ Day — a perfect time to talk about the new initiative that former US President Barack Obama, unveiled to boost research that leads to better treatments (maybe even cures!) for many conditions like nerve disabilities, genetic conditions, cancer and diabetes and so forth. During his State of the Union address in January, President Obama briefly mentioned the Precision Medicine Initiative, a $215 million undertaking included in the country’s federal budget for 2016. It aimed at “pioneering a new model of patient-powered research that promises to accelerate biomedical discoveries and provide clinicians with new tools, knowledge, and therapies. ‘Personalized medicine is an evolving field in which physicians use diagnostic tests to determine which medical treatments will work best for each patient.’ The capability to “deliver the right treatments at the right time, every time, to the right person” could mean an entirely new era of medicine, the President said. “We should not just celebrate innovation; we must invest, nurture, encourage innovation.

The notion of personalized medicine and genetic-mapping is not entirely new; efforts have been underway globally for a long time. KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital & Medical Research Centre and the Diabetes Centre, its support groups, Indian Council of Medical Research, Medical Council of India, New Delhi and the National Diabetes Centre of Belagavi (Belgaum) Karnataka pioneered “New Frontiers in Diabetes Scientific Conclave’ regularly conducted every year since 2010. Dr. Balasubramanian, Ph.D., Dean of Research Studies, a Senior Scientist at the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, Chennai, in his oration, addressed the integration of “OMICS”, the data key to personalized medicine, which is an ongoing revolution in the field of medicine. “Borderless Biology: Brightening Opportunities” is a big attraction amongst the students. Dr. Bala narrated Proteomics, Epigenetics; RNAi and miRNA, gut microbiome (metagenomics) and metabolomics aspects of diabetes. Dr. KA Shekar, Director, Karnataka Institute of Endocrinology and Research, Bengaluru, in his keynote address at the New Frontiers in Diabetes (NFD) narrated “The Tale of Two Paradigms” in the practice of precision diabetes. The conference emphasized the importance of precision care practice in the next decades. The beginning of Clinical Biomarker Centre in the hospital, one small step forward in the KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital, will be the beginning of OMICS science in our hospital.

Modi-Health Care initiation from the present Government introduces universal health insurance scheme for common man covering all significant ailments. The programme will bring a large volume of services to the private sector through public sector hospitals are also eligible to participate. The significant challenge for doctors will coordinate with patients and other stakeholders within the service providers very carefully so that they can achieve the clinical outcome at a lesser cost permissible under the scheme. The doctors have to efficiently use the resources as well as communicate with patients very carefully to avoid any duplication of efforts as well as wastage of resources including combining Internal Audits With Anti-corruption Compliance. A lot of responsibility falls on the medical profession, and this Doctor’s Dy should aim to take a pledge to know our aims to serve the public.

Doctor’s Day, celebrated in India, is a lesser known day as compared to the World Health Day, World Diabetes Day, World AIDS Day, National Youth Day (India) and so on—1 July, it marks the birth anniversary (and death anniversary) of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy (1882- 1962).

An excellent medical doctor, he has contributed significantly to the Indian medical scene. He established the Indian Medical Association (IMA) in 1928 and even the Medical Council of India (MCI). He also played a dynamic role in launching the Indian Institute of Mental Health, the Infectious Disease Hospital, and even Kolkata’s first-ever postgraduate medical college. In his younger days, Bidhan came across an inscription that read, “Whatever thy hands find to do, do it with your might”, and he thoroughly imbibed this in his life. Even when he joined politics in 1925, he ensured that his medical service was undisturbed. He devoted an hour every day to serve the poor with his medical knowledge.

He was Mahatma Gandhi’s close friend and doctor. Dr. Roy wanted to continue his profession when his name was proposed to be the second Chief Minister of West Bengal; it was on Gandhi’s advice that he took up the post. A Bharat Ratna award rewarded his contribution to the country in February 1961.

Long Live Doctors’ Day 2018.

Take Care Your Eyes – Dr. Shilpa Kodkany

by Dr. Shilpa Kodkany, MS (Ophth)

Our eyes are God’s gift to us to see this wonderful world. We must take care of them.

How to take care of our Eyes?

Usually, around the age of 40 everybody starts feeling the need for spectacles to see the fine print. This is a normal aging change just as we start greying around that age. The lens inside the eye becomes less elastic and so cannot focus on near objects very well, hence the need for glasses.

After age 40, certain eye problems like glaucoma, cataracts, Age-related macular degenerations can start. So routinely along with checking of spectacle numbers, The eye pressures and the retina at the back of the eye are examined.

eye

The eye actually works like a camera. Just as the lens of the camera focuses on an object similarly the Lens inside the eye helps us focus on objects to see clearly.

Does this mean we get our eyes checked only after 40?

No, every child, although we feel everything is normal, has to be checked around the age of 5 when they start reading. Nowadays most schools get a health checkup done which includes an eye check-up. This is a very good screening method since very often children are not able to tell or understand that they cannot see well. School checkups are done as a mass activity and hence a proper eye check where the vision of the child is checked and if need be spectacles can be given.

Eye Problems in Children:

  1. Spectacle numbers.
  2. Squinting of eyes: If a child has a squint an eye check-up is required at the earliest. The eye which is squinting goes weak and can end up as a lazy eye. Sometimes only glasses can help correct the squint if not surgery is also required.
  3. Some children can also have cataracts, glaucoma or retinal problems since birth and they need to be addressed.

So a complete eye checkup by an Ophthalmologist is a must if any parent has the slightest suspicion of a problem.

Computer Vision Syndrome

We live in the age of technology which is a great boon to us and the society at large but there are some downsides to this too. Nowadays we see everybody children, teenagers, adults and the old constantly on some device or the other like mobile phones, computers, laptops, ipads or the most favourite pastime of all – Television. These electronic devices cause 4 times the eyestrain as compared to reading a book.

The Rule of 20:

Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20seconds.

Cataracts:

Most common cause of the decrease in vision in the older age group is a cataract. In India and all tropical countries, the incidence of cataract is much higher because of the ultraviolet rays present in Sunlight.

Cataract surgery today has advanced to a walk in walk out procedure where the recovery is very fast and people return back to their routine work the very next day. The latest procedure called MICS (Micro-Incision Cataract Surgery) involves removal of cataract and implantation of Lens inside through just a 2 mm incision. Cataract surgery has evolved from a 12 mm to a 2 mm incision over the years

Diabetes / Hypertension (High BP) and the Eye:

The blood vessels present on the retina undergo changes causing a reduction in blood supply to the retina causing permanent damage resulting in decrease/loss of vision. These changes if detected early and treated in time will help prevent blindness. So yearly check-ups of the eyes even if there is no vision problem is a must. Timely treatment in the form of laser treatment/ injections will help.

Every Year In The Month of Your Birthday get Your Eyes tested.

Eye Donation and Corneal Transplants:

  • Anybody can donate their eyes after their death.
  • Eye donation forms are available with most ophthalmologists.
  • They need to be signed after which a pledge card is given.
  • One must inform all the family members that one has donated their eyes.
  • The pledge card has to be kept with you at all times like a driving license.

eye4

After Death:

  • The cornea alone is taken within 6 hours of death.
  • The cornea is taken to the eye bank for analysis
  • The cornea is transplanted into a person who is blind due to the cornea being white.

ONE EYE DONATION WILL HELP TWO BLIND PEOPLE SEE. SO PLEDGE TO DONATE YOUR EYES TODAY.

SOME TIPS FOR HEALTHY EYES :

  • After age 5 get the child eyes examined by an ophthalmologist ( Eye Doctor )
  • After the age of 40 spectacle numbers, eye pressures and a retinal examination is a must once a year.
  • Get your eyes examined in the month of your birthday to remember your yearly check ups.
  • Any redness of the eyes needs to be attended to by your eye doctor.
  • Please do not take drops directly from the medical shop counter, every eye redness is not conjunctivitis.
  • Conjunctivitis is a viral infection and most often spreads through contact with an infected person. It does NOT spread by looking at somebody who has conjunctivitis.
  • Do not rub your eyes. Rubbing of eyes causes infections.
  • Eat healthy food to keep your eyes healthy, healthy food doe not mean have only carrot juice. Foods rich in Vitamin A are carrots, green leafy vegetables, eggs, and meat.

Happy Doctors Day To All.
