Alliance Air could commence operations from IXG

If we believe what are sources have confirmed, then from second week of July we could Alliance Air to fly thrice a week to Bengaluru to begin with.

From July 1, 2018 Spice jet is stopping its only current service to Belagavi, in May there were 5 flights daily and suddenly after SpiceJet ditched IXG and shifted to Hubbali as it got route under UDAN.

If we have to believe our sources, they more good news, Air India, Indigo have shown keen interest in starting operations from here but they have some technical difficulties with them. Like, Air India needs to get landing slots in Mumbai and Bengaluru while Indigo has shortage of planes currently and it can think of new routes only when it gets more planes by July end.

alliance air

The Save IXG group has been pressing for more flights and would be meeting in person the minister in Delhi in some time.

Indigo is player we must keep an eye on as it is interested seeing the load factor but currently is tied up with shortage of planes as it has to start many new flights under UDAN.

Even now the load factor at HBX except for the Chennai flight is not very good and with Indigo starting from HBX the load factor can dwindle down as there would be around 21 flights to and from HBX.

Inclusion of IXG under UDAN is a policy decision and as announced by PM Shri Narendra Modi in a rally in Belagavi, but it would be mostly by the year end.

Definitely Belagavi has lacked the political pressure which Hubbali has gained but the Save IXG like peer groups have been able to make some kind of noise and get the fact noted that we also deserve more.

At a special meeting called at his CADA office, MP Suresh Angadi has asked the PWD, Railways and City corporation to prepare a DPR, detailed project report for constructing an overbridge which will start from Khanapur road near SBI and end at the starting point of the newly RoB been built.

HD Revanna, PWD minister who was on a visit to the city has in principle approved this plan and asked for a DPR and hence the authorities have been asked to prepare a DPR for the same for which the estimated cost is Rs.15 crore.

A Wireless transmission tower for CCTV at Gogte Circle
A Wireless transmission tower for CCTV at Gogte Circle

This would be the biggest infrastructure development in the city, as motorists who plan to use the RoB can get direct access with this new bridge and motorists going towards Station or to Congress road can go underneath the said new planned Bridge.

This will also solve the traffic chaos as the signals can be avoided and will have to be placed only in two directions namely Station road and Congress road.
Now, this won’t happen soon, but a DPR will have to made by the PWD as the said road is under its purview and then get the same sanctioned and then the tender process, all of which could take another 6 months and then the construction time which could again take anywhere between 6-12 months.

Students make proposal of flyover at Gogte Circle connecting new RoB

A group of students from the department of civil engineering ML Bhartesh Polytechnic Belagavi have designed a detailed project of a flyover at Gogte Circle which will connect the new RoB.

National Highway (NH-4A) i.e. Belagavi to Panjim starts from passes through the heart of the city. There has been a rapid growth in the vehicular population in the city. It is also understood that some of the major essential commodities to Goa State are also transported from here. Owing to absence alternate corridor for freight traffic movement, all the major transport vehicles. Thus in order to decongest the city an alternate road traffic solution is necessary and hence this solution of a flyover from SBI has been proposed by these students and the same has been presented to MP Suresh Angadi, MLA Anil Benake and the City Corporation on June 1.

The group has done a survey and interacted with stake holder’s traffic police, bus drivers, auto driver, car driver, two wheeler and others.

Abhishek Malaji, Atul Belgundkar, Junaid Svanur, Nagyaswamy Hatti, Shubham Malaji under the guidance of Raju Manolkar lecturer, have made the detailed project.

Today’s urban traffic control does not move traffic safely and expeditiously with minimal negative environmental impact at an economic cost. A system that causes accidents, delay and congestion are not fit for purpose. Elevated speeds, needless stops and delays, and the priority of drivers who enter a junction over those who are trying to exit have inflicted untold damage on society for the best part of a century. Hence to come out of these problems they have proposed a model of flyover at Gogte circle.

The reconnaissance was initiated from Gogte circle and continued towards the end point of the traffic survey analysis along the alignment specified.

Gogte circle flyoverGogte circle flyoverThey have identified that flow of traffic from Globe to Basveshwar Circle is 60%, Globe to Congress road is 30% and Globe to Station is 10%.

Taking into consideration the volume of traffic and pattern of movement, for decongesting the junction, it is proposed to provide a flyover along NH 4A which carries the major share of traffic. This also segregates the through traffic from cross traffic. In view of the high volume of traffic along this route, dual 1 lane carriageway separated by a central median is proposed for the flyover structure. Each 1 lane carriageway, intended for each direction of traffic, has a width of 7.5m with crash barriers of 0.5m width on extreme outer ends. The central median has a width of 0.5m. The existing alignment of NH 4A is followed for the flyover. The flyover is on structure except for a small length on either end. Earthen ramps with earth retaining structures on sides are proposed beyond the abutments on either side. Minimum vertical clearance of 5.5m is proposed from the at-grade road top to the bottom of the deck at the obligatory span locations at the junction. The proposed flyover has a total length of 427m. Thus the flyover and approaches including ramp portion shall have a total length of 427m. The junction shall have a length of 60 m. At grade road of 7.5m width is proposed on either side of the flyover as a service road for local and turning traffic. Footpath cum drains is also proposed at the outer edges of these roads on both sides.

The four-lane deck shall consist of 8 numbers of pre-cast post-tensioned I- girders with in-situ RCC slab. The girders are spaced at 2.2 m. Cross diaphragms are proposed at support locations. The superstructure is supported by POT-PTFE bearings.

The substructure proposed is RCC hammer-headed piers with shaft flaring towards top portion and a straight portion below is proposed. Where vehicles are to cross below, the minimum vertical clearance requisite of 5.5 m is ensured.

The said projects have won many accolades at various College fests.

PARSI Fire Temple

PARSI TEMPLE (Agiyari), opposite Benyon Smith High School, Camp Belagavi.

The Parsi Temple in Belagavi was consecrated a December 9th, 1891. The temple was built by Kurseji Pestonji Boyce. There is a Dharamshala, a guest house for Parsi travellers and also residences for the priest.

In the year 1920, the temple was handed over to the Anjuman for maintenance and for performing the daily rituals. The rituals essentially comprise of fire worship and prayers which are carried forth, five times a day. The chief priest is the only authorized person to perform these rituals. The first of the daily prayers are held immediately after sunrise, later in the noon, immediately after sunset, at night and the last worship is performed at 1 am. Zoroastrianism is a simple religion and has less of rituals and restrictions compared to other religion. The basic tenets only say that nothing should be done in excess. The prophet Zarathushtra, preached what is known as the “Golden Mean”, which says that there should be no overindulgence in any given act of human life. Parsi religion relies simply on good thoughts, good words and good deeds.

The religion recommends no fasting or abstinence for any religious function or observance of a ritual. There is no allowance for conversion in this religion. One cannot be converted to Zoroastrianism. This alone has caused the diminishing of the community. Marriages outside the community are also forbidden and would lead to ex-communication in case of any violation of the dictum. Children of those excommunicated are barred from undergoing the “Navjyoth” or the initiation into the religion.

“Farwasi”, the bird-like symbol is all embodying for the Parsis, as it conveys that the soul also has light and fire in it.

The temple is managed by the Anjuman which consists of five elected members. There are only two classes of Parsis-the priestly and the non-priestly class.

The entry into the Fire Temple is restricted only to the Parsi community. The once 2000 and an odd number of the community today has dwindled to less than 150 souls. At present, there are only a few families left in Belagavi city.

Banks to bid in auction to get Smart city funds as deposits

The Smart City project in Belagavi is earning more than it is spending; yes this true. The Belagavi Smart city ltd had received about 380 crores as funds but it has hardly used even 15% of the funds and hence it has earned more than 25 crores as interest on it from the current deposit at the Union Bank of India.

On Monday as many as 7 banks will participate in an e-auction and bid above 7% to get the same funds for their bank as a deposit.

It would be interesting to see how much more the banks will offer.

Belagavi (adjective) : A unique state of mind

$
0
0

Have you come across questions from random people visiting Belagavi, like ‘How do you tolerate this mad traffic?’ ‘Why don’t you guys protest that water is available barely once a week?’ ‘Do you wait like this every day at the closed railway gate?’

traffic-jam

If you do, then like me, you must have shrugged them off saying ‘we are like that only’. But this damp weather is making us dull, lethargic, sleepy and a thought comes to mind.

Belagavi is not just a city. It’s an adjective. It’s a state of mind. A state of acceptance of situations and things around us without protesting or demanding.

dogs

Packs of stray dogs roam the streets and run after your life when you ride at night. But that’s alright. We take the safe routes and make home safely. I know how to race my bike over dumps and bumps early mornings, to duck these dogs who have followed me many times when I attended law college.

water-jamboti vadgaon
The authorities have simply banished the dustbins from every street and then the garbage collectors rarely visit. It’s alright. We take our garbage on our bikes and search for bins to dispose it. It’s alright. Two reservoirs supply us water and yet we get it barely once a week. We’ve bought extra vessels and pots and store it anyway. It’s alright. We’ve learned to use water judiciously.

The PB Road bridge is ready but trucks are parked on both sides and a dozen cement poles just lie unused blocking the road and creating traffic jams. Now the entire stretch is wonderfully dug at several places in the middle to build manholes. We take detours; wait again at the traffic jams. We’re used to it. It’s alright.

When other cities are dreaming of bullet trains and monorails, we’re sheepishly looking at our non-entity of buses plying on the roads. I can’t remember the last time I took one. Have you heard anyone saying ‘Oh! The bus is very convenient for me, so I ditch my bike and take the bus’?

city-bus

Our city has a great culture and heritage of art, architecture, music, and artists. A similar city elsewhere in the world would have boasted of as many museums. What do we have for a museum? A museum is a community’s Instagram page, something to show and flaunt about. It’s alright.

art-day

If you wake up early, you’ll come across hundreds of morning walkers banging across each other on narrow walking tracks in tiny gardens. Those who shudder to walk round and round, take to the potholed roads. Why don’t we have dedicated jogging tracks and walking spaces in huge parks? So we take our vehicles and go outside the city to walk- to Racecourse road and double roads on the outskirts. What a paradox in the name of health and environment sensitivity.

race-course
Don’t lose heart. Even if we’ve faced these situations, we’ve never complained. We never demand anything vehemently. We never protest. We accept things for as they are. The world speaks of learning mindfulness, wakefulness, a state of constant calm. We live it every day. From as long as we remember.

Should we try to get a Geographical Indication tag for this collective state of mind? Don’t worry. We’re fine, thank you!

Didn’t I say, Belagavi is not just a city. It’s a state of mind.

Belagavi wakes up to Bohri cuisine

$

Belagavi is a mini-melting pot of different cultures across the world, where Maharashtrian and north Karnataka food is spiced with and Goan and Karwari delicacies, but the real foodies would know that our city has many more influences which have over years brought delight to the taste buds of those who love to experiment with their palate.

Belagavi has welcomed every cuisine with open hearts and healthy appetites. We have never been disappointed though and today we are blessed with Irani, Parsi, Savji and many more. But one cuisine which was always there but not in the plates of common citizens is the elusive Bohri food. Yes, you heard it right, the Bohri cuisine, the authentic Gujarati non-veg food is in town, and looks like it’s going to be a ball.

The Bohri’s have traveled a long way from Yemen, grueling through the middle east, the Arabian Peninsula and the beautiful heaven of Gujarat , but what they have ensured is that they have picked up the best of spices and the most delicious recipes on every pit stop moving further south into India. Bohri or Bohra cuisine is mainly nonvegetarian but they do plenty of justice for lentils.

A few years ago, there was hardly any chance of sinking your teeth into a Dabba Ghost or slurp on Mutton Khicada unless you could wangle an invitation to a Bohri friend’s place. With the Bohris being a close-knit group, their culinary delights did not reach far and wide, until recently. Earlier, people had no idea from where they could get Bohri food. Now, the scenario has changed with Zahabia’s Kitchen, 134, High Street Camp, Belagavi, which is now serving authentic Bohri food.

Rolls, Kebabs, Baida roti, rich Haleem and khichda, chilled firnis and, of course some great desserts are delights one can indulge in here.

Zahabia Barafwala, has been cooking for over 18 years Bohri cuisine and many would have indulged on the Raan or the Mutton Patveli at the Food Festival. All the year round she used to make on order a few dishes but with the growing demand from the foodies now she has opened Zahabia’s Kitchen, which also has dine in.

Zahabia’s KitchenZahabia’s Kitchen

Bohris are Trading community who came to Belagavi in the British era, but who finally settled here and spread their influence on not only the trade and commerce but also the culinary landscape.

Their way of handling lamb is old school, where the meat is simmered over a long period to reach a stage where it is soft and juicy with the masalas it was cooked in.

Zahabia’s Kitchen

Mutton Khichda is a specialty — made of delicious, slow-cooked meat and lentils and garnished with thin slices of garlic, birasta (fried onion), mint leaves, a pinch of salt and a squeeze of lemon.

When you’re here, reserve your appetite for Dabba Gosht, Mutton Lagan Sheekh, Mutton Patveli, Mutton Harabhara Kheema, Chicken Baida Roti, Mutton Khicada, Mutton Haleem, Biryani Lucknowi style, kebabs, Boti, Bheja fry, Bohri-roasted raan, nibble on cream tikka, or scoop up a fiery red mutton with a Ghee-laden Gakhar and other skewered fare, hot off the sigdi. These dishes must be had steaming hot, with dollops of tangy mint chutney, onion, and mint leaves.

After such a feast those taste buds need some cooling down with some amazing desserts such as Creamy n crunchy Watermelon, Tender coconut delight, Soufflés and Frini’s.

Definitely not a joy ride

Cute little kids riding on a bike, looks nice, isn’t it? It is a great source of satisfaction for the parent who can proudly claim that my child has grown up.

Wow! What an accomplishment!!

kids-on-bike
Now let us consider 6 scenarios:

1. The kid’s zoom around the city, have all the fun they want and nothing happens. A happy event for everyone. No one will even notice or talk about it since all is well that ends well.

2. The kids zoom around the city but then, thanks to the condition of the road, the bike slips and they have a fall. Luckily, no one gets hurt. They are strong lads. No damage is done so they pick themselves up, a few eyebrows are raised and they get back to business again. Life moves on. Bad incidents need to be forgotten and such falls can always be blamed on the pathetic condition of the roads. The Government is to blame and maybe even the Traffic Police. It is their fault. Not that of the kids.

3. The kids zoom around the city and thanks to the wonderful power packed into their bike, they hit to the divider. They have a fall, the vehicle gets damaged. The eyebrows are raised even more. Why can’t they make stronger vehicles? In good old days, the bikes used to have metal exteriors so nothing used to happen. This is all the fault of the manufacturer and we can do nothing about it. If they have a license, insurance might be claimed, otherwise, the parents save themselves from the embarrassment by sweeping the matter under the carpet. Hush, hush!!

4. The kids zoom around the city, have a greater fall and one or more get hurt.
Unfortunately, the damage is rather serious and it calls for hospital expenses. Maybe the one in the driver’s seat gets the blame. The surgery is done if just a minor treatment does not suffice and life moves on.

5. The kids zoom around the city and accidentally happen to hit someone. It is not their fault. The person just came in their way and it could not be avoided. The poor parents pay a compensation, lots of eyebrows are raised and maybe now it makes it to the newspapers but life moves on.

6. The kids zoom around the city and something more serious happens. God forbid, but it does happen. Maybe a life or two is lost but then life is quite cheap in a city like ours. A few families are shaken up. There is an even more gory story in the papers, a few stupid and inconsiderate people even click photos but soon it is forgotten and life moves on. If another vehicle is involved, especially a larger one like a truck, then the bigger crime is blamed, the cops are blamed, the roads are blamed, there are a few protests but life moves on.

Such incidents are common and we have raised the issue several times before. Nothing seems to change on the ground. Sadly, all the parties involved do not seem to care unless something really unfortunate happens. Kids without a license, both boys and girls, especially those riding triple seated, pose a grave danger not only to themselves but also others around. And this crime is not restricted to one age since we can see adults and even complete families indulging in the same.

But life moves on and in a vastly populated country like ours, life is very cheap.

This could be your child, your relative, your friend, an entire family or maybe just someone whom you don’t know or it could be you, but shouldn’t we make it everyone’s responsibility to see that this comes to an end?

Scruffy work under Smart city damages UG cable

The City of Belagavi has been dug up over the past couple of years on various counts especially the Underground cabling by HESCOM, and now add woes to it the Smart city works are damaging these UG cables and the power supply was hampered.

Not once but many times such incidents have occurred when the digging done for the smart city projects has damaged the UG cable.

hescom-ug cable

On Sunday 11kv UG cable in Shivbasav Nagar was damaged and the HESCOM staff had to repair which took over 3 hours and hence power supply to a few areas was stopped.

This has been occurring over and over again but no respite.

This shows the casual attitude with which the work is done by both HESCOM and Smart City. No one is bothered to see how deep or exactly where the UG cabling is done, in fact in many cases the UG cabling has passed through main Drainage lines. Then the City Corporation was crying foul on HESCOM, now HESCOM on Smart city.
