December 1 was the muhurat for the breaking ceremony for the new Commissioner of police office in Belagavi and Shri Basavaraj Bommai, Home Minister of the state was here to do honors at the police lines site.

But as per the report of the Praja Vani the minister was not happy with the design.

After seeing the design and maps the minister was disappointed on the over all plan and said

You are not constructing any govt hostel here, it is prestigious Police Commissioner office, Plan could have been better

He also suggested a few changes to the design approved.

Mysuru got it’s new Commissioner office which was recently inaugurated in November has attractive architecture and is constructed on the lines of Lalitha Mahal Palace. The building has six small domes on its sides with a big dome in the centre and the new ivory white coloured building is spread over 4,268 sq. ft. Simon and Associates are the architects and the building was constructed by Manipal Energy and Infrastructure Limited. The new eco-friendly building is constructed in the 19th century heritage style.

And office in Belagavi looks dull and just like the minister said a hostel.

When money is being spent, it should be spent so that the outcome is also good.

Commissioner of Police Belagavi will be built at the site of City Police Lines College Road, behind the RLS Campus on 2 acres of land.

From August 1, 2014, Police Commissionerate for Belagavi was made operational and IGP Bhaskar Rao was the first Commissioner of Police.

But from day one the Commissioner of Police did not have an office of its own. Since the beginning, it is housed in the SP office.

Then there were plans to shift the office to the half-built Police Gymkhana building at Sangolli Rayana Circle, but that to did not work out.

As Belagavi is home to various defense and para military training institutions the state Govt is contemplating of establishing a training school for mid-level police officers on the grounds of the National Defense Academy Khadakvasla model, said Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai.

Mid-level police officials who serve in the department up to the rank of Additional Superintendent of Police for about 30 years require advanced training on the lines of defense officials and hence this idea has been conceived.

Citizens council demands better traffic management system

$

The Citizens council members met Home minister Shri Bommai and shared their thoughts about a better traffic management system in Belagavi city.

Over the years the traffic has seen exponential growth but infrastructural development to support the same has not been upgraded. Parking has come up as the biggest headache for both citizens and law enforcement authorities.

1. Parking Space

Currently, the Citizens are being fined and their vehicles are towed away due to indisciplined and wrong parking but we think that this is not the permanent solution as one has to provide the parking spaces for the citizens visiting the city. Without the provision of parking places by the administration simply penalizing the vehicle holder seems unethical.

At present, our City is having only one Parking lot with a small number of Parking Spaces. A multilevel parking place is proposed long back but at present nothing comes to reality. With the present traffic conditions, a minimum of 4 multilevel parking complexes should be built with the war footing effect.

Belagavi has geared up its image as a Commercial Hub as a maximum number of Customers from Goa, Konkan, Kolhapur, Hubballi Dharwad visits Belagavi for their purchases and with the same trade commerce and industry of City is Benefited a lot resulting in revenue generation to the state.

But as per the media reports as well as the people from other states are complaining that their vehicles are being targeted for routine paper verification once they enter the city. We understand that our traffic police are doing the same with the intention of the safety of the city as Belagavi is situated on the border of two-state, but we think some liberal attitude is must boost the trade commerce and industry of the city.

With no Ring Road and all the heavy vehicles, traffic is moving through the city which causes hindrance to the existing traffic resulting in traffic congestion. We request you sir to build a Truck Terminal at Desur as well as near Kakti to streamline the traffic problem.

Interstate Highway Patrolling Squad.

As you are aware of the fact that Goa is fully dependent on commodities of daily consumption on Belagavi, everyday around 400 trucks are on way to Goa from Chorla Road. Recently as per media reports, near Kinaye Village to Chorla many transit thefts have been taken place on moving vehicles. Kindly install Highway patrolling squads from Kinaye to Chorla to stop the same.

Installation Of CCTV in the Market Business Centers.

We request you, Sir, to install the CCTV Cameras in the Business and residential sensitive areas of City. This will definitely curb the crime in the city.

Public Grivance Cell

We request you Sir, to start a Ward wise Public Grievances Cell for bringing better governance in the city and for the Citizens.

We earnestly request your good selves to please look into the above issues which we are confident will transform the City into a much better place to live-in giving the Citizens, Working Class ,Children’s, Traders and the Industrialists an opportunity to compete in the commercial world using the best infrastructure made available by the Government through your personal efforts in Belagavi City.

Born in the beautiful city of Belagavi, Rati Hulji aspires to become a leading model. With her roots in Karnataka, she wants to spread her branches across India and around the world.

Even though she was brought up in Mumbai, Rati has spent most of her childhood in Karnataka, which is why the place is so close to her heart.

She has done her Bachelors in Mass Media, and is currently pursuing modelling as she has always been passionate about it since her childhood. She had won the rank of 1st Runner Up of Bombay Times Fresh Face 2014.

Rati has pursued activities in a variety of fields: from learning Bharatnatyam for 7 years, learning no little bit of tabla to karate and horse riding. She is an avid camper, having camped in a number of national parks till date. After getting into college, she decided to work towards modelling and took part in fashions shows.

She took the effort to groom herself and train herself on how to ramp walk. It was while she worked in a corporate job that she realised that modelling is where her heart lies, and it was something she couldn’t let go of easily. She knew she could try her hand at modelling again at that age and was sure about not wanting to face regrets for not giving her passion another go.

So, after getting back again, she did multiple collaborations with photographers and started building her profile. She got an agency to represent her and worked with well known brands, and finally started living her dream ever since.

Please give it up for Rati Hulji who has won the title of VLCC Femina Miss India Karnataka 2020! Many congratulations to you on your success and we wish you all the best in your journey at VLCC

Don’t burn, use the shed leaves fruitfully

I have lived all my life in Belagavi, with climate that would make it feel like an air conditioned city, and am proud of it to the core. Every day when I take my morning walk, one thing that strikes me is the tendency of burning waste on the street side.

The City Corporation cleaning staff collects and piles up garbage, usually comprising leaves, twigs and plastic, to one side of the road. Then one they light a matchstick to this pile every day. The whole pile of dried leaves, twigs along with plastic burns, emitting smoke (mostly toxic owing to the plastic within. I keep a tab on the Air Quality Index of Belagavi on my mobile app and many times I find it to be bad. When we blame the farmers of Punjab for the worsening Air Quality of Delhi, we must not commit the same mistake.

As an engineer and entrepreneur myself, I understand that one can’t find a solution by being part of the problem. I would like to narrate my experience during one of my visits to America where my daughter resides with her family. The trees there shed massive amount of leaves in the autumn and fall seasons ( cold regions don’t have evergreen trees).

The city council staff also regularly trims these trees. That makes a huge pile of leaves and twigs, much more than what we see in India. But they have devised a way to fruitfully use this organic waste. In the accompanying pictures, you will see a truck attached with a shredder.

The cleaning staff piles up this organic waste from the sidewalks and inserts it inside the shredder which turns it into tiny bits. A large part of these shredded bits is laid on the open spaces in gardens and sidewalks itself. What remains is then taken away. These bits now serve two purposes- they can be packed in large volumes in trucks and also they are then transported to dumping bins where the waste is turned into compost.

My suggestion to the City Corporation to make Belagavi a Smarter City, would be to procure at least two such shredders or try and get them made in Belgaum and use it- one for the South and one for the North part of the city. I would also urge the citizens of Belagavi to try and use these leaves and the twigs from trees nearby by turning it into compost wherever possible. That way, what comes from the earth goes back to the earth to enrich it.

We always feel that Belagavi does not offer any places of historical value which are worth visit (as one visits the city of Vijapura/Mysuru), but in fact, there many places which have definite historical value. We often move around these places but never try to see and learn about their when/who constructed them, any other major events or personalities related to them, sculpture, wooden carvings, paintings, and most importantly if any old photographs available with them which may throw light on the city of old Belagavi.

Just a few places I have managed to see –

Vitthal Mandir Belagavi
VitthalDev Mandir, Vitthaldev Galli Shahpur Belagavi

1.

Vitthal Dev Galli temples: There are 6-7 Vaishnavite temples are situated here. Some temples are in good condition because still some Brahmins and Marwadi’s visit and perform poojas, except one which I guess (Murlidhar temple) adjacent to Dr. Javali’s hospital is in a dilapidated condition, which certainly seems most ancient. Also, in Shahapur Khade Bazar we find Mahadev temple and Maruti temple.

Balaji Mandir Belagavi

Adjacent to the Nucleus Mall there is a small temple and an old well (which is not visible from the outside).

The name of that well is Baragada Bhavi (12 pulley well ) at Hutatma Chowk and people used to fetch water from that well as far as they lived in Ganapat Galli as well.

2.

7. Rajwada compound in Madhavpur Vadagaon. I have heard some interesting things about the people who lived here who were Sansthanik’s. I have also heard that still today there are some war weapons and some structures can be seen.

8. Dak bangla, near goaves. People talk about various strange things about this place (like, some say this Bangla was used by dacoits). No one knows exactly about this place. Looks like a haunted house. Today this place is being used by the government irrigation department. Also, in Kacheri Galli there is one old building which people say was used as a jail in old times, these days this is being used for government offices.

9. Shahapur saraf katta. This is now completely extinct, as it was removed as a part of the master plan some 15 years back. There used to be a number of old Jewelry shops there. I have heard people from all over India used to come to Shahapur saraf Katta to buy Jewelry in old times.

10.Masjid’s and Darga’s. The prominent one which comes to my mind is Belagavi Khade Bazar masjid and Darga besides DCC bank and another darga near police headquarters.

The story of Rangubai Bhosale and her Rangubai Palace

Rangubai Bhosale was born to Ramachandra Rao and Balabai Bhosale,a farmer family,in 1895 in Balekundri village. Rangubai lost her father at the age of 5 and this fateful event brought Balabai with little Rangu to Belgaum.

With no place to stay, they took shelter at the steps of the Basavanna temple for over a month. Rangubai was enrolled in a school at an early age and was a seeker of knowledge.

Shree Rangubai Palace, Ramling Khind Galli

Balabai started selling butter in the weekly Saturday markets to make ends meet. Business flourished and Balabai would travel frequently to Pune to deliver butter to Chiman Shethji, sometimes accompanied by Rangubai.

During one of their visits,Rangubai was intrigued with Shethji’s other business of assessing the genuinity of pearls and diamonds. He taught her the art and also helped in setting up her own shop in Pune. She was appreciated for making her mark in the otherwise male-dominated profession.

In 1920, Laxmanrao Bhosale of Nagpur visited Pune and was impressed with Rangubai’s skills of assessing the pearls/diamonds. He invited her to settle in their Wada in Nagpur. During their stay, Laxmanrao’s mother fell ill and Rangu started studying Ayurveda and later started her own manufacturing unit producing Ayurvedic medicines.

Few personal events led to Rangubai returning to Belgaum. She started her own ‘Maharashtra Aushadh Kaarkhaana’ in 1924.

As the business grew, Rangubai started planning a bigger space and with the help of Engineer Raosaheb Aaraas, the foundation stone of the present-day Rangubai Palace was laid in 1927.

Rangubai Palace Ramling Khind Galli Belagavi

The building has an eclectic nature with elements of neo-Gothic and neo-classical coming together. The cast iron railings were custom made with the name of the palace and Rangubai’s portrait. The construction is in a combination of black basalt and beige coloured stones with jack arch slab construction.

The palace was set within a compound wall with a pair of marble lions stationed at the gate. The compound was taken over during road widening. The second floor was planned as a Diwaankhaana with galleries for women to sit and hall for various cultural programmes.

Rangubai also had her own theatre company ‘Chittarkarshak Naatak Company’ for a brief period. On 8th June 1929,Laxmanrao Bhosale inaugurated the palace. However, work in the palace was over only by 1932.

A printing press was set up in the palace by the name ‘Lokamitra’ during the election period in 1937 in which she contested. She lost the elections but was the first woman to be elected in the Belgaum Municipality later.

The palace was used as a recruiting centre by the Maratha Light Infantry during WWII.

12th October 1962 Rangubai passed away in Miraj and was brought to Belgaum for her last rites. She believed that only education can empower citizens and eradicate poverty. Rangubai Saheb Bhosale Trust was made in 1937 and she kept her promise of donating her life savings to the betterment of the Bahujans. Since 1966, Rangubai Bhosale Girls Schools runs in the palace.
