In a Very unfortunate incident a person from Gandhinagar lost his life as he fell down and open steel bars pierced his body as he fell on them near CBT.
The deceased has been identified as Mehmood Mulla aged 65.
The incident occurred at 8 pm on Saturday near the entrance of the CBT where the steel bars for the divider have been kept open.
Mulla lost his step and fell down on those open bars killing him on the spot.
This is not the first incident in which the lethargic work of the smart city has claimed life’s.
On Mandoli road also similar incident had occurred.
We were awestruck to read that Mandoli road is completed on the website of Belagavi Smart city.
https://bscl.in/completed/ – This page which mentions the list of the completed projects also mentions Mandoli road.
As of now the one stretch of Mandoli road From the Glasshouse entrance (now closed) to Lotus county is not finished and is again a death trap.
But seeing the website that it is complete we really don’t know if the smart city officials also know about what is complete and what is incomplete.
The works to be undertaken – Project Component:
Storm water Drain
Underground ducting
White topping road
Cycle track & Footpath
In July 2017 the first major tender under the Smart city project was floated and that was Mandoli Road(First gate towards Mandoli part of MG Road included) and KPTCL road at Nehru Nagar will be developed as Smart roads under the Smart City project at a cost of Rs. 20,38,78,736.38 in about 12 months’ time from the date of the work order.
The contract was awarded to NARENDRA CHUNILAL PANANI ( PRIME CIVIL INFRASTRUCTURES PVT. LTD. )Company Name: PRIME CIVIL INFRASTRUCTURES PVT. LTD. For Rs. 233173528.6.
A cyclist has already lost his life on the same road as the gutter was kept open where in the steel rods claimed the life just like the incident near CBT on Saturday.

The ‘Villages of India’ has been designed keeping in mind various factors like, the diverse visitor profile, accessibility and to create a platform where villages from all zones of India can be displayed. By which the diverse art, craft and culture of India can be portrayed.
The project consists of the cluster of villages from following states.
Belagavi (currently under Gulbarga ESIC Regional office) is also one of the top contributors of ESIC at a staggering 1, 20,000 persons covered. Mostly these are Industrial workers from MSME. This organized Manufacturing sector contributes a large amount to the ESIC fund on monthly basis regularly.
ESIC under the aegis of State Government supported by the Central government insures the workers and their families against the cost of Medical Treatment accrued during accidents & illnesses. Hence it is a critical legal provision to protect the rights of the workers to receive the benefit of proper health care.
The Belgaum District Small Scale Industries Association (BDSSIA) represents the MSME’s of Belagavi District. The Belgaum Chamber of Commerce & Industries (BCCI) is the apex body representing all Trade & Industrial enterprises of Belagavi District.
During an occasional visit by members of BDSSIA and some grievances received from Industrial workers, the office bearers & Managing Committee Members of BDSSIA & BCCI have visited and inspected the ESIC hospital facility at Ashok Nagar, Belagavi in the presence of Dr. Shri Prakash Phonde, ESIC Medical Superintendent, ESIC, Belagavi & Shri. Gurvinder Sigh Deputy Director In-charge. ESIC, SRO, Hubli.
Following are the observations regarding the roofing work made during the visit, on Wednesday 14th July 2021.
a) The PWD Department of Hubli has approved the fabrication of structural work and roof of ESIC Hospital to overcome the rain water leakages through the top slab. The top slab is cracked in many places and a sagging.
b) The existing building is 30 years old. They are incorrectly adding 30 tones of structural steel for roofing on the terrace. We have serious doubt over the structural integrity of the existing building and we believe this work being carried out will cause more damage.
c) We were unable to find any building safety / construction feasibility survey done by PWD to carry out this work (which is akin to an extension) which will exert a huge load on the building structure.
d) The Associations have demanded to stop the work until the safety of the structure is proven & the feasibility of the project estimated to be Rs. 1 Crore is justified for the work.
Following are the appalling observations regarding the ESIC Hospital facilities made during the visit, on Wednesday 14th July 2021
a) The OPD, Store Rooms, General wards, staff rooms, & Operation Theatre, washrooms, in-fact the whole hospital is in Poor hygienic conditions owing to water leakage & dampness, improper plumbing, poor housekeeping & maintenance.
b) The basement store rooms were found to have scrap, waste and overrun with rodents and we have heard of occasional sighting of snakes in the basement.
c) The rooms used for the storage of medicines are unfit for the purpose. We found molds, falling plaster, broken door and totally unclean space with pungent odors.
d) The wash rooms for gents & ladies are totally useless as they are under repairs infinitely and are currently being used to store waste materials.
e) We found improperly stored and unattended PPE kits and masks which are critical for fighting the COVID pandemic.
Shri. Gurvinder Sigh, Deputy Director In-charge ESIC, SRO, Hubli agreed to our observations and views that the facility requires upgrade and with very strict management. He has also conveyed this matter to his superiors but awaiting action since long time.
The Present ESIC Hospital at Ashok Nagar hospital has a capacity of 50 beds only & given its conditions, only 3 to 4 patients are admitted on daily basis and rest are diverted to other ESIC Connected Hospitals. This is reduced to only an administrative office rather than a hospital. In the end the workers, employees and their families are the sufferers. This facility has been graced by the visits of MP, State Ministers for Labour, Industry, District In-charge Minister and many others, yet it is in such appalling condition.
For many years the BDSSIA its members and workers at large have been requesting for establishing 500 bed ESIC hospital at Udyambag or Machhe which is accessible to 5 major industrial estates. This issue is still pending and we need to acknowledge its seriousness with respect to the lives of workers, employees and their families.
Further we have submitted the memorandum in this regard to Dr. Shri Prakash Phonde, ESIC Medical Superintendent, ESIC, Belagavi as well as Shri. Gurvinder Sigh Deputy Director In-charge. ESIC, SRO, Hubli.

My first thought when I realized that I had run out of chili powder was one of horror.
I had to get out of home and navigate the obstacle course that the outside world calls a road, not to mention the rest of the trials that go with it. As I consider alternatives, sadly nothing comes to mind and I reluctantly gear up for the inevitable. Anyway, the curry is awaiting a dash of chili and I have to be on my not so merry way.
With great trepidation, I take the turn from the Indian sweets store that abuts my gate onto the main road going towards the third gate. As I turn the steering wheel towards the right, I use my X-ray vision (it’s a mandatory super power while driving on Indian roads) to look through all the four-wheelers parked five feet from the kerb in front of the store. X-ray vision non –withstanding, I could barely discern the outline of the mighty trucks that blare their way through this stretch. I inch my way forward by holding my right hand out in a stop sign. Before you ask, yes, that works most times, but you have to wear an idiotic grin on your face and keep nodding in the general direction of the traffic begging for forgiveness.
Finally, I’m able to cross the road and the grin drops. I can’t imagine smiling through the next hurdle- the crater ravaged ….sorry, words fail me at this time. Those that have escaped its deep belly know exactly what I’m talking about. As I strain my neck to look over the hood of my car, I see the usual chaotic scene unfold in front of me.
Every car is doing the “now you see me, now you don’t” move as they dip and rise in the potholes. The 2 wheelers are doing the disco dance, showing off their evasive moves. I feel every bump and jarr and the only saving grace is the bundle I saved on my monthly massage.
I see it, I see it! The mythical third gate flyover. Steeped in mystery regarding the completion date, it looks like a relic from a bygone era that everyone now pays homage to. So near yet so far and with a final blaring honk I make it past the third gate. My relief is short-lived, as here come the motorists who fervently believe that it is their constitutional right to drive into oncoming traffic. As I deftly manoeuver my little car past them, I am now a certified sign language expert as I gesture wildly at them. Their stoic calm in the face of such overwhelming hand movements makes me want to up the ante on my Bharatanatyam gestures. Arre! Traffic is no deterrent to these death-defying Bollywood motorists who put Singham to shame.
Here comes the second gate and I play the fastest tyre first with the mini tempo next to me ferrying iron rods that are protruding 3 feet out of the back. My victory is short-lived as he makes a dash for it (the iron rods are holding me ransom) and crosses the railway tracks. The final insult is a big splash of stagnant rainwater cascading all over my car as he misjudges the depth of the pothole he just sped over.
I’m breathing deeply by now, revving up to give him a taste of his own medicine when a cyclist comes towards me ( in the wrong direction, obviously) starts doing the shimmy on his cycle as he hurriedly wobbles out of my way after looking at my indignant expression. Sigh! My quarry has escaped by now.
Resignedly, I turn onto the main road and my destination is the big supermarket which is now the place to be seen (since we have nowhere else to go!). Having edged my car into a tight-fitting spot, I dream of dashing in and dashing out, but alas the dream lays shattered, as I see a mass convention taking place inside. Did everyone need to shop today? I brave the throngs, politely ask people to step away from me when they get too cozy, ignore all the barbs and missiles heading my way. As I exit and head towards my car, I find two more blocking my race to freedom. Do these drivers assume that behind every parked car is free petrol? How am I supposed to back out? Don’t be smart and ask me to use my superpowers, they are nearing depletion point by now. As I start to turn around to stomp my way back to the entrance, two gentlemen hurry towards those cars and speedily drive away. Whaaaat!!!! I don’t even get an apology!!!!
I sit in the car and visualize my long arduous two-km journey back home. I know, I know, you’ve reached exhaustion point too and I shall be magnanimous enough and leave the trials of my return journey for another day. Sorry, just can’t help it, I have to give you a peek preview. I had a wee bit of trouble with our “Smart” City works and the pedestrians who have taken jaywalking to another level.
Back home, I’m just happy to add the chili powder to the curry, and as my hand reaches for the Haldi powder……

The CEN police Belagavi have recovered Rs 10 lakh of a retired BSNL employee who had lost the same in a major cyber scam in Belagavi and three persons have been arrested in this connection.
Of the three accused arrested by the police, the main kingpin is from Jamtara dist Jharkhand and the other two are from Nashik. It is learned that Yallappa Narayan Jadhav, a retired BSNL employee at Maruti Galli Kangrali BK, was robbed of Rs 10 lakh on June 9 through cyber fraud.
On that day, an anonymous person told Jadhav on the phone that he was speaking from SBI Bank and asked him to send his photos on WhatsApp as he needed an Aadhar card and bank passbook details to update the KYC in his account. Following this Rs 10 lakh were withdrawn from Jadhav’s account as he shared the OTP and he had clicked one link which the fraudsters had sent by a text message.
Jadhav had lodged a complaint with the Belagavi CEN Police Station on June 10, the next day after realizing the nature of the fraud and taking note of this complaint, Inspector of Police CEN team led by Gaddekar, under the guidance of Commissioner of Police Tyagarajan and Deputy Commissioner of Police Dr. Vikram Amte, thoroughly investigated the case and recovered Rs 10 lakh.
Three persons, including the main accused from Jharkhand’s Jamtara district and two others from Nashik, were arrested and interrogated on July 15 in connection with the cyber fraud case. They confessed to the cyber fraud.
A total of Rs 12 lakh 56 thousand has been seized from the accused and a case has been registered under the Cyber Act. Five mobiles and three debit cards were seized from the accused and 50 accounts of different banks used by them for fraud were frozen.
Police investigations have revealed that the accused have so far used 48 mobiles and 304 SIM cards for cyber fraud. It has been revealed that these three have committed several cyber fraud cases in Belagavi, Gulbarga, Bangalore and Hyderabad.
There is a web series on the same as well Jamtara: Sabka Number AyegaA group of small-town young men run a lucrative phishing operation until a corrupt politician wants in on their scheme — and a cop wants to fight it.
How the crime is committed- modus operandi
Step 1: Acquire a series of mobile numbers, use all of them to try and log in to a bank account. If a number prompts an OTP, it’s time for the next step.
Step 2: Call the number’s owner and pretend to be customer care executives of the mobile operator offering to upgrade SIM cards or Know Your Customer (KYC) details. Gain trust, obtain the victim’s email ID.
Step 3: Send an email to the victim containing text to be sent to the official customer care number. It’s a ruse to register your email ID with the victim’s number, so that you can put in an official request to convert the SIM into an e-SIM. Once done, the victim’s phone number and everything else it’s linked to, including the bank account, is under your control.

Mahesh Foundation has been working for HIV-infected and underprivileged children for the past 13 years supporting the livelihood, education, and healthcare of the children. Over the years, it has supported more than 20000 children.
Well-known architect Mr. Alok Shetty has designed the Charitable Hospital and he has also designed the existing school building of Mahesh Foundation. The hospital will be built beside the KHB colony in Kanabargi, Belagavi near the hill area in a total area of 23000 sq. ft.
The project is under construction and is expected to be completed by May 2023. the work on the same has been commenced a couple of months ago.
This hospital will serve the needy people by providing free healthcare services to thousands of poor in rural areas who can’t afford health care. It will have 6 Floors and 100 beds including 26 ICU beds.
The hospital will consist of below facilities:
OPD Wards/Rooms
IPD Wards
Pharmacy
Dialysis Unit
Diagnostic Unit
Blood Bank
Reception
Registration Counters
Doctor Rooms
Lab Room
Xray Room
Dining Hall for Attenders & Kitchen
Other Facilities of hospital
Nowadays poor people are unable to afford healthcare. The conditions have worsened after the hit of the COVID-19 pandemic. The government is committed to providing quality health care but it is not satisfactory. There are Primary Health Centers but the service these health care centers provide is not encouraging. Most of the population primarily depends on government infrastructure. This hospital will enable Mahesh Foundation to help some of them and ensures all the facilities that the patients need are free of cost.
This intervention will also be an attempt to satisfy the concern of better health care to rural people who lack facilities in Primary Health Center. This proposed Charitable hospital is expected to be completed and ready for operations within two years.
There is a need for a modern international grade hospital providing free treatment to bridge the demand gap that is currently not addressed by the existing healthcare.
Memories often form the brightest part of our thoughts. There always is the temptation to commence a conversation with “Good old days”. While change is a more permanent feature than the status quo on the face of the planet, the mind always wanders and hovers around what things used to be ‘Once Upon a Time’.

I am your own Belagavi aka Belgaum, erstwhile Venugram and just like my inhabitants, I am gladdened by the arrival of the much-awaited monsoon. It’s always a wonderful feeling when the elements of nature emerge in a whole new bathed glory. The withered grass awakens to a whole new lease of life, the trees unleash their enchanting green and everything assumes the beauty of the excitement of a newborn. Life seems more alive and the freshness of the air is almost intoxicating. The dark shroud of the cloud is ominous no more since it brings wet promises of times that are important for sustenance and subsistence for the year to follow.
The sun has its share of hide and seek. Each downpour brings in waters accumulated from far-off lands. I sometimes wonder where and from which distant lands, the clouds gather their booty. The parched mother earth eagerly gulps its fill as the accumulating waters trickle down to the depths to create a store that is tapped by all forms of life.
While each monsoon may seem the same yearly spectacle, there is always the memory reminiscent of the good old days when, maybe, the spectacle was even more spectacular. In good old times, the behavior of the clouds was different and more predictable. The punctuality of the monsoons functioned like clockwork. Come the first week of June and a resolute blanket of the dark clouds would set in, refusing to budge for over two months. The local folk would largely crave to remain indoors. The wet soil would accumulate a characteristic chill which would soon transcend to take the form of biting wet cold and the residents would draw on their warmest clothes and even snuggle cozily in the depth of warm blankets. The ice cream shops would be shut for the term and the atmosphere would be thick with the aroma of hot tea and fried food.
The green Fields
Puddles in the streets with water assuming the red shades of the soil and threatening to leave stubborn patches on clothes would signal the arrival of wet prosperity. The expanses of the paddy fields would be overflowing with water with tender sprouts struggling to hold on to the soil for dear life with an ambition to feed humankind. The farmers bearing the gusty wind would be toiling heedless of the cold and the breeze to ensure that the little sprouts would get due justice for their efforts.
Small lakes at the outskirts would overflow and make their way to the scant human habitation of the extension areas and little kids and not-so little kids would get a chance to try their hands at fishing in a town devoid of any major water resource. The catch of the day would be displayed proudly to parents and the little fish would be deposited in neighborhood wells to extend the delight for another day.
The whole canvas was a sheer delight to the senses. Good old yesteryears…..Will it be the same again or will it just be a tale that starts with “Once Upon a Monsoon?”

Heavy rains have left several low-lying stretches of Maratha Colony, Cariappa Colony, Nanawadi, Kapileshwar colony, Sant sena road, Shivaji Garden, Gajannan Maharaj Nagar, Veerbhadra Nagar were inundated for more than 4 hours with water ranging from 2-5 feet.
Residents, whose houses had partially gone underwater, were left with no choice but to wait for the water to drain. The rains have yet again exposed the lack of proper drainage facilities in the city.
The water did recede after 1 PM but it left behind a lot of dirt and reptiles and vehicles submerged in water.
Everywhere residents complained of the DRAINS not being cleaned and the height of the road has been increased due to the new smart concrete roads which have seen more inundation in many areas.
Where ever smart city has taken up work water logging has been reported.
